Dad Paid $7,200 For One Daughter’s Braces, Now The Other Wants Cash Instead

Parents often try their best to treat their children fairly, but fairness does not always mean spending exactly the same amount of money on everyone. Sometimes one child has a need that another simply doesn’t, and that’s where family disagreements can become surprisingly complicated.

The original poster’s younger daughter needed medically necessary braces that cost more than $7,000. Ever since learning the price, his older daughter has argued that she deserves the same amount of money for herself, believing anything less is unfair.

The disagreement has now spread beyond the immediate family, with relatives weighing in on who is right. Read on to find out why this debate refuses to go away.

'AITJ for not matching the money I spent on my second daughter with my eldest daughter?'

This keeps coming up in family discussions.

My oldest daughter is mad at me because she feels that I should spend on her what I spent on my second daughter.

Here’s the thing though, I spent $7200 on braces for my second daughter.

The oldest started car shopping because she felt she was owed $7200. I don’t see those as the same at all.

My father recently brought it up again. Am I the jerk for not matching what I spent on braces?

Edit: I had already given the oldest $1000 to get a car. She had a car and was looking to upgrade it.

Also, I asked my ex wife for help to pay for the braces. She told the girls the cost. That is why she knew how much they were.

Edit 2: Three years between the girls. The braces were medically necessary. The first girl did not require braces.

One of the quickest ways for resentment to grow within a family is when children begin comparing what each sibling received instead of why they received it. Parents often strive to be fair, but fairness is not always the same as treating every child identically. Sometimes equal love requires different kinds of support because each child’s needs are different.

In this situation, the disagreement centers on two very different categories of spending. The second daughter required medically necessary braces, which represented a healthcare expense rather than a discretionary gift.

The older daughter, who did not need orthodontic treatment, interpreted that financial investment as money she should receive in another form, such as a car upgrade. From her perspective, the dollar amounts appeared unequal.

From the father’s perspective, however, paying for medical treatment fulfilled a parental responsibility, not a benefit that created a financial debt to the other child. The fact that he had already contributed money toward her vehicle further suggests he was supporting both daughters, albeit in different ways.

A useful psychological perspective is that siblings often evaluate fairness through visible outcomes rather than underlying needs. This is especially common when financial differences are easy to measure. Yet families rarely function well when every necessary expense is converted into a ledger that requires balancing.

If one child needs braces, glasses, tutoring, or surgery, most parents do not view those costs as bonuses that must be matched with cash for another sibling. Fairness in healthy families is usually based on meeting individual needs while showing consistent care, not ensuring every receipt totals the same amount.

Psychologist Dr. Laura Markham explains that children are highly sensitive to fairness, but they also benefit when parents clearly distinguish between equal treatment and responsive parenting. Supporting each child according to their individual needs helps build security rather than competition.

Verywell Mind similarly notes that perceived parental favoritism is often shaped less by actual spending than by whether children understand the reasons behind different decisions. Open explanations can reduce unnecessary comparisons while reinforcing that love is not measured in identical financial outcomes.

Viewed through that lens, the father’s decision appears rooted in medical necessity rather than preference. The braces addressed a health issue that the older daughter simply did not have.

That does not mean her feelings should be dismissed entirely. Seeing a large amount of money spent on a sibling can naturally trigger comparisons, particularly if the context is not fully understood.

However, equating healthcare expenses with discretionary spending creates an expectation that every unavoidable cost must generate an equivalent reward elsewhere, a standard that few families could realistically maintain.

Parents rarely achieve fairness by making every child receive the same thing. They achieve it by responding consistently, explaining their decisions honestly, and supporting each child according to their circumstances. Equality counts dollars. Fairness considers needs, responsibilities, and the realities each child faces.

Here’s the comments of Reddit users:

This group emphasized supporting the child in genuine medical needs while distinguishing wants from needs

BeginningSun247 − tell her if she needs $7200 in medical expenses you'll be there for her.

Mlady_gemstone − NTJ, mother didnt help pay for the braces so she should have the money to help with the car.

wanting an upgrade is just that, a want. getting braces is life changing and helps with teeth care in the long run.

medical help VS unneeded car upgrade want. .. yeah id help with the braces too.

These users highlighted the older daughter’s entitlement and selfish expectations, stressing that she is not owed money

Significant-Dig-8099 − NTJ your daughter is acting entitled

Heart_of_Joy − Braces were not a luxury for your youngest daughter. Your oldest daughter sounds very selfish and entitled! !

Ok_Passage_6242 − Medical expenses are different. I would be more concerned that you raised someone

so entitled they think they are owed $7200 for merely existing in this world.

I’m praying she’s under the age of 18 and doesn’t realize what she’s doing because if she was adult this crap that would make it even worse. NTJ

These commenters clarified that braces are healthcare expenses and should not be compared to optional purchases like cars

Zestyclose-Height-36 − tell elder daughter braces are health care, not presents. you do not need to match health expenditures.

Beautiful-Hotel-8846 − Braces are a necessity a car is not.

This group stressed that financial decisions regarding your money are yours alone, and neither the daughter nor father has an inherent claim

luckygirl131313 − Why does she know what braces cost? She shouldn’t be in your financial business

mistdaemon − First off she is owed nothing.

While it might not be right, you could choose to give one child more than another, for any reason or no reason.

Braces are far different than money for a car.

So if one child needed a medical treatment, all the rest should get the same amount? Nope. Being greedy and entitled has it's cost.

She needs to learn to behave.

ichthysaur − Neither your daughter nor your father gets the spending of YOUR money. The end.

Should parents try to keep financial support roughly balanced over a lifetime, or is meeting each child’s individual needs the fairest approach? How would you handle a sibling who believed a medical bill created a financial debt? Share your thoughts below.
