Twins Decide Enough Is Enough After Dad’s Girlfriend Keeps Mixing Their Names

It’s one thing to meet someone new in your family, but it’s another thing when that person seems determined to get under your skin. Some mistakes are small, some are annoying, and some feel intentional and that’s where tension starts building.

This story comes from a pair of 16-year-old twins who have been dealing with their dad’s girlfriend for two years. She repeatedly calls them by each other’s names, seemingly on purpose, and it finally reached a tipping point. The twins’ response shocked the household, and now the internet is being asked to judge who’s actually in the wrong. Keep reading to see how they handled it.

Two teenage twins start ignoring their father’s girlfriend after she keeps mixing up their names, and tensions rise fast

Not the actual photo.

AITA for completely ignoring my father’s girlfriend?

It’s more like “Are we the assholes?”

I have a twin (we’re 16, M). We have identical faces, but you can’t mix us up.

I have long blonde hair, he has short black hair and piercings.

He’s bigger, like he works out. No one mixes us up.

We have known her for 2 years. She mixes our names up all the time. At least 3 times a day.

We know she’s doing it on purpose to annoy us.

So, yesterday I was in the living room and she called me my twin’s name.

I just ignored her and pretended she wasn’t there. Then she called me my name and I answered her normally.

My brother did the same; we did it a few times.

Now she’s mad at us, apparently, we’re being extremely disrespectful and not being sympathetic

because she makes “honest mistakes” sometimes.

Feeling unseen and unheard, even over things that may seem small to others, can cut deeply. Being called by the wrong name might look like a minor slip, but for someone whose identity is tied to that name, it can feel like a quiet, ongoing erasure of who they are.

For the twins in this story, it wasn’t just about a name; it was a repeated message that they were interchangeable, diminishing their sense of individuality and respect.

At the core of this interaction lies the twins’ emotional experience: every time their father’s girlfriend deliberately called them by the other’s name, it sent a message of disregard. They didn’t just react to a mislabel; they reacted to what it symbolized: a lack of attentiveness and a failure to see them as distinct individuals.

This isn’t merely sibling rivalry or teenage defiance; it’s a response rooted in identity and respect. When someone repeatedly misattributes personal details, it can feel like their boundaries are being violated, even if framed as a “joke” or a “mistake.” It’s understandable that the twins chose silence over engagement; silence became a boundary in itself.

While many might chalk this up to teasing or immaturity, there’s a deeper psychological dynamic at play. The act of insisting on the wrong name, especially when corrected informally over the years, isn’t just absent‑mindedness; it can be perceived as invalidation.

According to Psychology Today, personal boundaries help us maintain emotional and psychological space, and when others ignore those boundaries, it can trigger feelings of disrespect and emotional exhaustion.

Clear personal boundaries “dictate how we approach relationships… help us live in‑tune with our desires, needs, and feelings.” In other words, when someone repeatedly crosses a boundary, even a subtle one like using the correct name, it conveys that the other’s preferences and identity aren’t being honored.

This insight helps explain why the twins’ response wasn’t “just rudeness.” Their quiet refusal to engage was their way of protecting their sense of self when verbal correction hadn’t worked. When boundaries are crossed again and again, researchers and therapists note that people may emotionally withdraw as a coping strategy, signaling discomfort without directly confronting the conflict.

If the goal is mutual respect and improved family dynamics, an honest conversation about how names and recognition impact identity might be healthier than insisting it’s an “honest mistake.”

Encouraging respect for individuality, even in small interactions, can lead to deeper understanding. After all, how we honor someone’s name reflects how we honor their personhood.

Here’s what people had to say to OP:

These Redditors agreed OP is NTA; correcting the name is fully justified

enumarelish − NTA. She's going for a power play.

defenestrationinc − NTA. She should know the difference after two years.

You’re not disrespecting her by correcting her in such a subtle way. She needs to get over it.

drekiaa − NTA: If she isn't going to call you by the proper name, you have no reason to respond.

f_thatspookyshit − NTA. She’s doing it purposely.

You guys are right to ignore her when she’s not calling you by your correct names.

Virulencer − NTA. You can't be expected to respond to a name other than your own.

She's the one being disrespectful. An honest mistake is fine,

but it is still a mistake that you own and apologize for and try not to repeat.

girlygirl14534 − NTA. You guys weren't being rude to her, you simply answered her when you heard her name.

If she started yelling out "tomato" in your direction, does she expect you to come running then?

She called you the wrong name and you are under no obligation to respond.

However, I will say that my mom consistently mixes up my sister and my names and she birthed us

and has had over 20 years to get the names straight. It's an honest mistake and doesn't bother us at all,

but that's dependent on context. I know that it's an honest mistake,

whereas it seems that you doubt your dad's good intentions.

I also know that my mom actually knows the difference between me and my sister,

and maybe you feel like she hasn't even taken the time to get to know you and your twin on an individual level.

Basically, it is possible that the name mix-up is an honest mistake

BUT since she knows it upsets you guys she needs to try harder.

This group suggested firm yet polite methods for making her learn your correct names

SignificanceSpeaks − NTA If she pushes just let her know you’re not used to answering to a name that’s not yours.

When she gets your name right, you’ll respond to her. Won’t take long to learn who’s who that way.

isla_inchoate − NTA! I think this is a great way to stand your ground and demand respect without being disrespectful.

You can acknowledge that she is speaking to you, and correct her on your name before you respond.

I like your method better, but if your dad gives you a hard time you can still stick to your guns without giving it.

If she calls you the wrong name and your dad says you have to respond,

say, I'm not Mark, I'm Dave, did you want Mark, or me? Do this every time.

Don't let her do this to you guys. I'm sorry this is happening. Good luck, I think you are totally, 100% NTA.

These users joked about calling her by random names if she keeps messing up

AwkwardAF0277 − NTA. Does your dad have any previous girlfriends that you know of?

You should start calling her by their name. If she gets pissed, just remind her "its an honest mistake."

mclemmington − NTA calle her by a different name and get arsey when she doesnt answer

PopDownBlocker − NTA. Wow! She's an a__hole. Start calling her random names and pretend that it's an "honest mistake"

because she happens to look like various ugly celebrities you can think of.

This set highlighted persistent name-mixing shows disrespect or lack of care

graywisteria − NTA. If this is an honest mistake (and I highly doubt it is),

it would be because she doesn't actually care about you enough to get to know you as individuals.

Her freakout that you are being "disrespectful" is also kinda narcissistic of her.

amaraame − That's no honest mistake. Maybe the first time or 2 but to keep doing it is blatant disrespect to you both. NTA

EBlackR − NTA - She’s the one being inconsiderate by not making an effort to tell you two apart.

Especially considering you sound pretty physically different enough that the twin factor shouldn’t be such a big deal.

Imagine how insane this situation would sound if it were someone’s kids who weren’t twins,

just the same age and the girlfriend couldn’t tell their names apart.

Sorry, you have to deal with this. It sounds super irritating.

Teens asserting their identities in the face of persistent misnaming may feel minor, but it reveals bigger issues about respect, recognition, and family dynamics. The twins’ silent protest sends a clear message: “We’re individuals, and our names matter.”

Do you think their reaction was a necessary boundary, or did they go too far by ignoring her? How would you handle persistent name mix-ups in your family with humor, confrontation, or silent rebellion? Share your hot takes below!
