Stepdaughter Returned After 17 Years, Then Began Calling 12 Times A Day

Family estrangements rarely have simple endings. Even when someone returns after years apart, old wounds do not disappear overnight, especially if trust was shattered long before the reunion ever began.

This Redditor says her husband’s daughter cut off the entire family for seventeen years, only to suddenly return and expect everything to go back to normal. Since then, what started as renewed contact has turned into constant phone calls, alarming accusations, and repeated police welfare checks whenever a call goes unanswered.

While her husband sees a daughter trying to reconnect, the poster believes the behavior has crossed a serious line. Read on to find out why this family is deeply divided.

A wife refuses to forgive her husband’s estranged daughter after her sudden return

'AITA for not forgiving my stepdaughter after she slandered me to my friends and makes harassing phone calls?'

My husband has an adult daughter from a previous marriage. Years ago she sent messages to my friends that I am a horrible person, evil, n__ty, and abusive.

I have only interacted with her a few times (she lives across the country) and she was in her 30s and living on her own when I married her father.

All my interactions with her have been warm and polite. I considered her family.

But she had a falling out with her father one day and stopped talking to both of us

(and her little half sister too, my biological daughter, who was 11 at the time) for 17 years.

My husband reached out to her several times but she ignored him.

She also denied her little half sister's friend request on social media (she was high school age at the time).

Eventually my husband stopped reaching out, and made peace that she is gone forever and was angry that she acted like he did not exist,

and especially due to the reason why. The falling out was due to my husband's son passing away and his daughter

(the one I don't want to forgive) only cared about the joint investments she had with her deceased brother.

My husband got disgusted at her lack of care that he just lost a son and she a brother, and told her off and hung up on her.

That was the last time they ever spoke, although he sent her several nice messages and letters to her in the years afterwards, to no avail.

Then one day, 17 years later, we get a phone call from her.

She was warm and friendly and acted like she hadn't wiped me, her father, and her little sister from the face of her earth for almost two decades.

My husband was distant to her at first, just exchanging basic pleasantries and making it clear

that he has been doing just fine without her despite her coldness and abandonment for almost 20 years,

but she kept calling regularly and then started calling with stories of health problems, not having enough money, marital problems,

and things that happened to her in childhood, all of which she would later say the opposite of.

She calls her father's (and my) phone up to 12 times a day nearly every single day, and has sent the police to our house for a welfare check several...

all because we did not answer her calls.

Even when we did answer her calls, or would tell the police that we are fine and to pass that along to her,

she sends the police back to our house a mere few days later.

I tell my husband that it's wrong and abusive and he gets angry at me and says that his daughter just cares and is worried about us.

Yet he talks to her almost everyday yet she still accuses him of not liking her and lying to her and sends the police to our house.

She texts me threats and says I am keeping her father from her, which isn't true. I always let him know when she calls.

For all those reasons and more (I had to edit the length of this post), I want nothing to do with her.

My husband gets very angry and calls me cruel and says I am disrespecting him by refusing to talk to her and forgive her.. AITA?

Forgiveness is often described as a virtue, but it is frequently misunderstood as an obligation. In reality, healthy forgiveness cannot be demanded, especially when harmful behavior continues.

Family relationships become particularly complicated when one person’s desire for reconciliation collides with another person’s need for emotional safety. Wanting peace does not necessarily mean inviting someone back into your life without boundaries, and refusing to do so is not always an act of bitterness. Sometimes it is an act of self-protection.

From a third-person perspective, the OP’s reluctance to reconnect appears to be shaped by a long pattern rather than a single disagreement. Years earlier, her husband’s adult daughter spread deeply hurtful accusations about her despite having had very little interaction with her.

She then disappeared from the family’s lives for seventeen years, cutting off not only her father but also her much younger half-sister. The estrangement followed one of the most devastating moments a family can experience, the death of the daughter’s brother, during which the conflict centered on financial matters instead of shared grief.

When contact finally resumed, there was no meaningful acknowledgment of the years of silence or the damage caused.

Instead, the relationship quickly became marked by repeated crises, contradictory stories, accusations, threatening messages, and repeated welfare checks despite regular communication. From the OP’s perspective, these events understandably make renewed trust feel impossible.

A different perspective is that the daughter may be struggling with significant emotional or psychological difficulties that influence her behavior. Frequent calls, fear of abandonment, inconsistent narratives, and repeated demands for reassurance can sometimes reflect profound emotional distress rather than calculated malice.

If that is true, compassion is appropriate. However, compassion and unlimited access are not the same thing. Mental health challenges may explain why someone behaves in unhealthy ways, but they do not eliminate the impact those behaviors have on the people around them.

The husband’s hope of rebuilding a relationship with his daughter is understandable after losing nearly two decades together, yet his desire for reconciliation does not require his wife to ignore conduct that she experiences as threatening or emotionally harmful.

Clinical psychologist Dr. Ramani Durvasula has written extensively about the importance of boundaries in relationships characterized by repeated emotional instability or manipulative patterns.

She emphasizes that empathy should never require tolerating behavior that repeatedly violates one’s sense of safety or well-being. Healthy boundaries are not punishments; they are limits that allow relationships, when possible, to exist without constant emotional harm.

That perspective highlights the central tension in this situation. The husband appears focused on preserving a long-lost relationship with his daughter, while the OP is focused on protecting herself from behavior she has repeatedly experienced as distressing. Both emotional needs are understandable, but they do not have to result in identical choices.

He may decide to maintain contact, while she decides that direct involvement is no longer healthy. Those are separate relationships, and respecting that distinction can reduce unnecessary conflict between spouses.

Ultimately, reconciliation is meaningful only when it is built on accountability, consistency, and mutual respect. Trust cannot be restored simply because someone returns after years of absence, nor should forgiveness be treated as proof of loyalty within a marriage.

The strongest family relationships recognize that compassion and boundaries are not opposites. In many situations, they are what make any future relationship sustainable at all.

Here’s what the community had to contribute:

These Redditors believed the stepdaughter only returned seeking money or personal gain

is_it_worth_itt − NTA. Karma caught up to her, she's only calling because she wants to take advantage of her father.

RainbowSherbert-2035 − Block her. She's still being vindictive and has only reached out because she needs something.

The request for support, financial or otherwise, will be coming soon. And the welfare checks are just a control tactic.

Answer me or I'll send the police to your home.   It's foolish to allow chaos back into your life. Block her.

TheyreEatingTheDogs- − She wants money and is trying to emotionally manipulate you into bailing her out.

Cinnamon_Sauce − My gut reaction is she is creating a paper trail of wellness checks to eventually deem them unfit to care

for themselves or have them committed. It's unlikely to work but could be her angle to get money and how devious she is.

Tattooed_book_nerd − NTA. She only wants the property/funds. She clearly doesn’t care about her father, her half sis or you.

She can stew in her karmatic mess. She’s a grown ass adult. She isn’t entitled to anything.

This group backed OP, blamed the husband, and urged firm boundaries against manipulation

New-Comment2668 − NTA. You do not owe anyone forgiveness.

She abandoned you and her father and her younger sister, never apologized, threatens you via text,

and now is weaponizing the police to force you to talk to her.

Your husband needs to wake up and realize that he does not get to force you to have a relationship with her,

and your refusal to tolerate her b__lshit is not disrespecting him.

HE, however, is disrespecting the hell out of you by refusing to listen to you and trying to force the issue.

fruitrollupsarerad − Your husband is the problem here. You need to set boundaries with him.

He's allowing his daughter to terrorize you in your own home due to his parental guilt.

Maybe I'm just incredibly petty, but if my husband allowed this stuff to happen to me while I was begging him to do something, I wouldn't be able to sleep...

I'd set up my own bedroom space in an office or go stay with a family member. He needs therapy.

These commenters felt the situation required professional help through therapy or mental health support

AtmospherePrior752 − NTA. Your step daughter is a very mentally ill person. She needs help.

SafetyFluid8535 − NTA but maybe encourage your husband and you to go to therapy to work thru this

a therapist could tell him that her behavior is problematic and ways to try to set boundaries.

This Redditor argued the wellness checks were harassment and should be reported to police

Boo-Boo97 − The welness checks are an abuse of police resources.

Contact your local police and make them aware of what's going on. Ask about filing a harassment complaint against her.

Should the wife block her stepdaughter completely while allowing her husband to maintain contact, or does the husband’s refusal to defend her make this a deeper marital problem?
