High School Bully Falls For The Girl She Used To Mock, Then Marries Her Years Later

High school relationships can change in ways nobody sees coming. The person who once made someone feel small can later become the person who understands them better than anyone else.

That is what happened to this woman, who spent her teenage years being ignored and criticized by one of the most popular girls on her volleyball team. Although she secretly had feelings for her, their relationship seemed destined to remain hostile.

Then one tense moment after school changed everything, opening the door to an apology, an unexpected friendship, and feelings neither of them had planned for. Scroll down to see how a former bully eventually became her wife.

A former outcast unexpectedly falls for the popular girl who once bullied her in high school

'I married my high school bully'

She was the ‘popular girl’ in high school and I was the super tall, awkward lesbian.

We were on the volleyball team together and she would always get onto me for messing up.

She was never friendly to me and would always leave me out of things intentionally.

I hated her personality but always had the hots for her and fantasized about her despite her treatment of me.

She was beautiful and everything I wasn’t - cool and confident.

I was one year above her throughout high school, I graduated in 2015 and her in 2016.

During my senior year, I made some big plays during a big game and she sort of began warming up to me.

After school one day, I walked past she and her boyfriend as they were getting into a huge argument.

He was getting into her face and nobody else was around.

I could feel something really bad was about to happen so I decided to take matters into my own hands.

I walked over to him and told him to back off. Surprisingly, he did (perks to being 6’4 and therefore bigger than most guys).

He called me some choice words and went on his way.

I asked her if she was okay and she immediately thanked me for interfering.

I could tell she was shook up so I offered to give her a ride home, which she accepted. Turns out she lived just down the street from me.

She thanked me again and thus began a friendship.

She apologized for the way she had treated me, saying she was just playing it up for the other girls and that she had matured beyond that.

Long story short, I eventually confessed my feelings towards her and she admitted that she had developed similar feelings towards me.

It was confusing for her because she had never been attracted to another woman before, so it took her some time to accept it.

She still claims to this day that I’m the only girl she’s ever had feelings for,

all of her celeb crushes are guys and it honestly makes me proud that I was the one able to win her over.

We started dating in 2016 and I proposed in February of 2018. We married last September and are currently expecting a daughter together.

Love can be strange, but I’m so glad it turned out the way it did.

I’ve only recently started opening up about our story publicly so I hope it can encourage or inspire someone out there 🙂

Sometimes the people who hurt someone during adolescence remain frozen in memory as the worst version of themselves. School can turn insecurity into performance, cruelty into social currency, and exclusion into a way of proving loyalty to the “right” crowd.

That history does not disappear simply because life later becomes kinder. Yet this story suggests that people can confront the damage they caused, abandon the identity they once performed, and build something unexpectedly meaningful from an honest apology.

The woman telling this story carried two conflicting feelings throughout high school. She disliked her teammate’s arrogance and resented being deliberately excluded, yet she was also drawn to her confidence and beauty. Her future wife, meanwhile, appeared to be protecting her social position by treating a quieter teammate poorly around the other popular girls.

The turning point came when the older student intervened during a frightening argument with the boyfriend. That moment did more than begin a friendship. It removed both girls from the hierarchy of school and allowed them to encounter each other as vulnerable human beings rather than fixed social characters.

A fresh reading of the relationship is that the rescue did not magically transform hostility into romance. Instead, it interrupted an old script. The former bully saw courage and gentleness in someone she had reduced to an awkward outsider.

The storyteller discovered that confidence could conceal fear, confusion, and a strong need for approval. Their attraction became possible only after both stopped relating through the roles high school had assigned them.

Even the younger woman’s unexpected feelings for another woman may have required time because they challenged her previous understanding of herself. Her uncertainty was not necessarily rejection; it may have been the difficult work of integrating an unfamiliar but genuine attachment.

The American Psychological Association describes bullying as persistent aggression or verbal abuse, often aimed at someone perceived as less powerful. Social exclusion can therefore leave meaningful emotional consequences even when no physical intimidation occurs.

The Gottman Institute offers another useful insight through its model of a mindful apology. A meaningful apology involves owning the behavior, attempting repair, and demonstrating improvement rather than merely saying sorry.

That distinction helps explain why this reconciliation feels believable. The former bully acknowledged what she had done without denying it, identified the social motivation behind it, and behaved differently afterward.

Years of friendship, commitment, marriage, and shared parenthood became evidence of change. Her apology opened the door, but consistent conduct made it possible for trust to enter.

Still, this story should not imply that kindness must always be rewarded with romance or that every victim should forgive a former bully. Reconciliation is meaningful only when accountability is sincere and emotional safety is present.

The most hopeful lesson is simpler: a painful history can influence a relationship without controlling its future. People are responsible for who they were, but they may also prove, through sustained choices, that they no longer live by the same values.
