Man Wants to Defund Planned Parenthood, Woman Asks How Far He’d Travel for His Own Health Care

Sometimes the fastest way to challenge someone’s perspective is to make them imagine the issue from a more personal point of view.

This Redditor shares a moment from an advocacy event at a state house where different groups were trying to influence lawmakers. While volunteering, she encountered a man campaigning to defund Planned Parenthood because of his opposition to abortion.

When she asked about the organization’s other healthcare services, including screenings and basic medical care, he had little to say. Instead of debating only the political talking points, she asked him to consider what it would feel like to lose access to his own essential healthcare. Her question quickly changed the tone of the conversation.

A healthcare advocate challenges an opponent by questioning access to his own medical care

'Let's talk intimate body parts'

About 10 years ago, I took a day off work to volunteer in my state house for an advocacy day.

Lots of different interest groups set up in the main rotunda to try to catch legislators coming and going.

My environmental group was there the same day as an anti-Planned Parenthood group.

I have multiple friends who are alive today because of the health care, like cancer screeings,

that Planned Parenthood provides and have family in rural parts of the state who already have difficulty accessing basic healthcare.

Trying to shut down all of PP because you disagree with part of it makes me mad.

A bearded white man with white hair was there encouraging defunding Planned Parenthood. He only wanted to shut down Planned

Parenthood to prevent abortions. I asked him about the health care that they provide beyond just providing abortions and he could not speak to that.

So I asked him "sir, how far are you willing to drive to have your prostate examined?

Because if you shut down Planned Parenthood you're making it harder for people all over the state to get the basic health care

that they need to stay alive so I'm curious  how far are you willing to travel if you lost easy access to your basic health care services?"

He just about jumped away from me.

If he's willing to talk about the reproductive parts of any human, clearly his own need to be fair game.

Sometimes the most revealing questions are not the ones that attack a person’s beliefs, but the ones that ask them to apply those beliefs to themselves.

Many public debates become easier when the people involved are discussing abstract ideas about strangers. The conversation often changes when someone is asked to consider how a policy would affect their own life, their own body, or their own access to care.

In this story, the disagreement was not only about a political issue. It was about perspective and empathy. The person advocating against Planned Parenthood focused entirely on one aspect of its services while appearing unable to address the broader range of healthcare many patients receive there.

The volunteer challenged that narrow view by shifting the discussion from a political talking point to a personal question: what happens when access to healthcare disappears? By asking about prostate examinations, she highlighted what can happen when people view healthcare through a selective lens rather than considering the full human impact.

A different perspective is that the power of her question came from exposing a common disconnect in public conversations. People often feel comfortable discussing medical decisions when they are connected to someone else’s body, but they may react differently when the same principle affects their own healthcare.

Her question was not necessarily about mocking him or dismissing his concerns. It was about encouraging him to recognize that healthcare systems serve real people with many different needs.

At the same time, conversations around sensitive medical topics are often most productive when they focus on shared concerns, such as access, prevention, and patient well-being, rather than only on disagreement.

Medical ethicist Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel has written about healthcare access as a fundamental issue involving fairness, resources, and the ability of people to receive necessary treatment regardless of circumstance. Decisions about healthcare systems affect communities broadly because medical services often involve prevention, screenings, and routine care as well as specialized treatment.

Similarly, the American Medical Association emphasizes that access to preventive care is essential because early detection and routine screenings can significantly influence health outcomes.

These ideas help explain why the question about prostate exams was effective. It forced the conversation away from a single controversial topic and toward a broader discussion about whether people should consider the consequences of reducing healthcare access for others. The discomfort came from recognizing that medical care is personal, regardless of which body part is involved.

The larger lesson is that empathy often begins when people stop seeing healthcare debates as distant political arguments and start recognizing the individuals behind them. Everyone has a body, everyone can become vulnerable, and everyone may eventually need care that they once assumed was someone else’s concern.

A fair conversation about healthcare requires remembering that dignity and access should not depend on whether we personally share another person’s circumstances.

Here’s the input from the Reddit crowd:

These commenters praised the argument for shifting the debate toward personal health and responsibility

theUncleAwesome07 − THAT is an excellent question! Well done!!

HardenedFlamer − This is actually a gem. Putting it on their health instead of random hypothetical 'others'. Honestly using this!

NoNeedForNorms − These anti-PP people are like if Baptists wanted to shut down grocery stores because they sell alcohol, it’s ridiculous.

And good for you for shaming him and maybe making him think

mother-of-dragons13 − You my friend are a legend. Beat them at their own game

These users supported individual choice while acknowledging different personal beliefs

NectarineSea3866 − I am personally against abortions but I don’t believe in forcing my opinions on others.

I do also believe that it is ultimately an individual right to choose. That being said, planned parenthood clinics provide wonderful services beyond just that.

I think that cutting those programs would create more problems than they prevent!

Unfortunately there are a lot of people who work overtime to convince you they know what’s best for everyone.

TheResistanceVoter − I think I love you. Are you married? =)

Strong-Criticism-481 − Amen to that.

This group celebrated the commenter’s response as clever, effective, and deserving praise

UnlikelyPen932 − You are a hero we need!

Troiswallofhair − You might want to tweak your third sentence, I initially thought you were there as part of the anti group.

I got the gist from your other sentences though.

no2rdifferent − I stopped and asked (individually) how many children they adopted to a group of holier-than-thou a__rtionist protestors.

I drove by their protest daily to work and was sick of it. It worked! . . . for about a week. Christians are weird.

Do you think asking someone to imagine losing their own healthcare access is an effective way to create empathy? Or should debates stay focused on broader principles instead? Share your thoughts below!
