Coworker Asks Him to Be Her Man of Honor, Then Gets Angry When He Refuses

Being asked to stand beside someone on their wedding day is usually an honor, but it can also come with a lot of responsibility.

This Redditor was surprised when a relatively new coworker suddenly asked him to be her “man of honor” shortly after returning from vacation.

Although he appreciated the gesture, he politely declined because they were not close friends and he did not want the responsibilities that came with the role. Instead of accepting his answer, the coworker became upset and insisted he needed to participate.

She later gave him a list of wedding duties and continued trying to convince him despite his repeated refusal. Now he is wondering whether he missed some hidden expectation or if his coworker simply reacted badly to being told no.

A coworker is confused when declining a wedding role leads to an unexpected confrontation

'Coworker asked me to be her man of honor. I said no and she went nuts. What did I miss?'

This happen yesterday and I'm still confused.

Yesterday was my first day back to work after being off for two weeks. This is kinda important.

One of my coworkers had gotten engaged the week before I left.

When she announced at work we all did the congratulations and happy for her type of things.

I thought it was over. So when I left for vacation the last I knew no plans had yet been made.

Then yesterday when I went back to work my boss K and best friend L said that coworker C was looking for me.

I asked what was up and they weren't sure but she was carrying a little gift bag.

A few minutes later C found me and asked how my vacation was. I was telling them about it and she cut me off and said she had a very...

She handed a little gift bag and asked if I would be her best man of honor for her wedding.

I thanked her and told her that typically this would traditionally go to a close female relationship.

She responded that there was nothing traditional about her wedding so it was good.

I looked over at L and K who were both trying to keep from laughing.

I again thanked her congratulated her and told her that I wasn't interested in being part of her wedding party

and that I would be happier being a guest in the audience.

I swear when I said this it was when we watched her entire demeanor changed and a switch flipped.

She went off saying that I have to be in her wedding and that she doesn't understand why I would say no.

I told her that we only knew each other for a short time and that I had no interest in trying to plan parties, dinners, and shopping trips.

She told me I needed to think about it and she would get back to me later. I told her go for it but my answer will be the same.

She walked away and I looked at K and L and asked what the ever loving fresh creepy hell was that??? K started to laugh and said she didn't know.

But saying no like I did might have saved me a lot of headaches in the future.

L made the comment that she went straight to bridezilla and this was a look into what she was going to be like.

C came back today however she went with a different approach and handed me a list of what she wants me to do and her vision of how she sees...

I asked her why she gave me this and she said that as her man of honor these were my responsibilities.

I told her again that I was not going to do any of this. She started again that she needs me to do this and "How much fun it was...

Then she asked "Haven't you ever wanted to be part of something special?" I told her I was. I was a nurse.

Enter K who could sense that I needed help and told C one of her patients needed her help.

I told K that if this keeps up I might need her help. She said she was already watching it and and would intervene if I needed it.

What did I miss??? We aren't that close. She just transferred down to my unit from a different unit six months ago.

I had no idea who she was until that point. L is saying that she is close in age to me and she might feel that to be enough of...

Did I miss something??? When we are asked are we supposed to automatically gush and jump up and down in excitement? Why is saying No a bad thing?

Being chosen for an important role in someone’s life can feel flattering, but an invitation is not the same thing as an obligation. Many people struggle with saying no when someone presents a request wrapped in excitement and emotion.

However, meaningful roles, especially in major life events like weddings, are built on genuine relationships, not simply the assumption that another person will be available to fulfill a position.

In this situation, the confusing part was not that a coworker asked for a favor. It was the expectation that the answer had to be yes. The coworker appeared to view the role of “man of honor” as something she could assign rather than something another person could willingly accept.

The colleague was polite, expressed appreciation for being considered, and explained that he preferred attending as a guest. His response was not an insult or rejection of her happiness. It was a boundary based on their actual relationship.

They had only known each other for a relatively short time, and he did not feel comfortable taking on the emotional, financial, and time commitments that often come with being part of a wedding party.

A different perspective is that the coworker may have been approaching him from a place of excitement rather than manipulation. Some people do not follow traditional wedding roles and may choose friends, coworkers, or unexpected people who have made a positive impression on them.

She may have genuinely valued his personality, kindness, or support at work. However, appreciation does not create entitlement. A person can feel honored by being chosen while still deciding that the role does not fit their life. The uncomfortable moment came when she treated his hesitation as a problem to solve rather than an answer to respect.

Psychologist Dr. Nedra Glover Tawwab, author of Set Boundaries, Find Peace, explains that healthy boundaries allow people to communicate their limits without needing permission from others. A request becomes unhealthy when someone attempts to pressure another person into changing their answer rather than accepting their choice.

Similarly, psychologist Dr. Harriet Lerner has written that difficulty accepting another person’s “no” often creates conflict because the person making the request focuses only on their own disappointment instead of recognizing the other person’s autonomy.

These ideas help explain why the interaction felt so uncomfortable. The coworker was free to ask, but he was equally free to decline. The fact that she later returned with a detailed list of responsibilities suggests she may have already imagined an agreement that never existed. She was responding to a role she had created in her mind rather than the actual conversation they had.

The larger lesson is that kindness does not require automatic availability. Weddings are meaningful because people choose to participate, not because they are pressured into performing a role.

A genuine friendship can survive a respectful refusal. If someone cannot accept a simple boundary before the wedding planning even begins, that may reveal more about the future working relationship than the original invitation ever did.

Here’s the comments of Reddit users:

These commenters criticized the bride’s assumptions and warned OP against being treated as a wedding accessory

bungojot − If she's refusing your No and handing you a list I'm betting she's picked you because she figures you'll be a good planner and can do all her...

Keep saying No as much as you can, especially in public - I'm glad at least one of your co-workers has your back.

NaturesCreditCard − I hate it when women think gay men are handbags. Just…. ew. You are not an accessory for her wedding.

ms-anthrope − are you gay? She has a very specific vision about how she wants her “non traditional wedding” to go.

Gay BFF for man of honour, you’re supposed to screech and make d__k jokes at her bachelorette.

Then she’s going to wear something “funky and fun! !” with her wedding dress instead of heels, like converse or cowboy boots.

Bonus points if the cake is just cupcakes.

river_andthedaleks − I don't mean to assume here but like are you gay or does she think?

Could she be going for the gay best friend stereotype? that would add a whole other level of weird.

maybe she has no close friend and wants to impress or like save face to the friends she's gonna invite to events.

but that's not your problem, keep your foot down!

These Redditors agreed OP should stay firm because the bride’s attachment and demands were inappropriate

mrs-poocasso69 − It sounds like she has no one else in her life and you being around her age and nice to her was enough to give you the “honor....

Stay firm and don’t give in.

jockstrappy − There's no way to rationalize crazy. Crazy is crazy

This group suggested involving HR if the unwanted behavior continued at work

Over_Smile9733 − If it continues, get HR involved. This is not appropriate work behavior. Good you have someone watching your back too. Stay firm.

Think_Dig_1288 − I’m not an expert but isn’t this an HR issue now. I mean isn’t that like harassment?

Lynncy1 − Having a gay man of honor is so on trend! She’s probably already put you on her wedding vision board, lol!

PainterReader − She wants to show off how different and edgy she is by having a man of honor.

She may also admire your organizing skills and get it done demeanor and thinks you’ll throw her great wedding related parties.

Do you think the coworker was simply excited and misunderstood the relationship, or did she cross a professional boundary? Should a wedding role ever be treated like an obligation? Share your thoughts below!
