Pool Worker Tells Teens to Leave Early, Then Gets Mad When They Actually Stay Until Closing Time

When a business has posted hours, customers often expect those hours to be respected, but staff members also deserve clear communication and consideration.

The Redditor explains that they were at a pool with friends when an employee became frustrated that they were still there several hours before closing. Instead of directly asking them to leave, the employee made passive-aggressive comments and later watched them closely as they packed up.

The group eventually left, but the interaction left everyone uncomfortable. Now the Redditor wants to know whether they should have left earlier out of courtesy or whether the employee’s approach was inappropriate.

A group of swimmers ignores a worker’s request, leading to an awkward pool closing dispute

'AITAH for not getting out of the pool when the lady told us?'

A few days ago i was at the pool with my friends, we were having fun when suddently the lady

that works there comes to us and says "im not staying here till 9pm for you!"

because we were the last people there and it was 6pm, we didnt say anything and kept doing our thing.

After like 30 minutes she comes back and said thing like we werent raised right and she sat down right by the pool.

My friend tried to get out of the pool but she said " no, no, stay as much as you like" but after like 10 minutes of her mumbiling things

we got out and she watched us drying the whole time.

So we were walking to the exit and she kept saying things from far but we didnt understand any, after we get to the door its locked and

we had to wait for her to come and open it, we said goodbye to her but she didnt even look in our direction. So whos at fault here?

Edit: the pool closes at 9pm

Small conflicts often become bigger than the original issue when people stop communicating clearly. A simple request can turn into a confrontation when one person feels ignored and the other feels disrespected. In shared spaces, especially places with closing times and staff responsibilities, both sides have expectations about how people should behave.

In this situation, the main disagreement was not really about swimming until 9 p.m. It was about whether the pool employee was asking the group to leave early or simply expressing frustration about being the last person responsible for closing. The teenagers understood that the pool officially closed at 9, so they believed they were allowed to continue using the facility.

However, the employee may have been trying to communicate that she wanted them to begin wrapping up because she was expected to stay until everyone left.

Instead of directly explaining the situation, she expressed her frustration through comments about manners and responsibility, while the group chose to continue without addressing the concern. That created a cycle where both sides felt the other person was being unreasonable.

A different perspective is that this could have been resolved in less than a minute with a respectful conversation. The group was not necessarily wrong for being there before closing time, especially if no rule required them to leave earlier. At the same time, ignoring a staff member who was clearly signaling that she wanted them to finish up was unlikely to improve the situation.

Even when someone communicates poorly, acknowledging the concern and asking for clarification can prevent a minor disagreement from becoming personal. The employee, meanwhile, crossed a line by making comments about how they were raised rather than simply stating the policy or asking them to leave.

Workplace experts often emphasize that customer service conflicts are frequently caused by unclear expectations rather than intentional disrespect.

The customer may focus on their right to use a service, while the employee may focus on the practical challenges of completing their responsibilities. The key to resolving these moments is respectful communication and clearly defined boundaries.

Psychologist Dr. John Gottman also notes that conflict becomes more damaging when people respond with criticism and defensiveness instead of addressing the actual issue.

These ideas suggest that both sides contributed to the tension. The pool users had the right to enjoy the facility during operating hours, but they could have responded more directly when the employee first approached them.

The employee had a valid frustration about staying late, but expressing it through insults and passive-aggressive behavior made cooperation much harder.

The bigger lesson is that rules and courtesy can exist together. A closing time tells people when a facility officially ends service, but consideration for workers also matters.

Likewise, employees deserve respect, but they should communicate expectations professionally. A simple conversation about whether the pool needed to close early would likely have prevented everyone from leaving with resentment.

Let’s dive into the reactions from Reddit:

These commenters agreed OP was right because the pool’s posted hours should be respected

peculiar-pirate − NTA. If it closes at 9pm you should be able to stay until 9. I get that she'd like to go home early but it is her job...

rcuadro − As long as the pool was supposed to be open until 9 then NTA

National_Sea2948 − NTA. Email her boss or the property owner and inform them about what happened.

Suggest that they put someone on evening shift that can willingly stay until their published closing time.

Heck if you meet the qualifications, maybe it could be you. Swim earlier, then get paid to chill by the pool and be available to close up at 9pm.

These Redditors believed the lifeguard’s actions were inappropriate and should be reported to management

Either_Management813 − NTA and you need to report this to whoever has jurisdiction over the pool. If it’s a parks and rec pool let the office of parks and rec...

Adelucas − Report her to the pool managers. It's outrageous that she forced you out of the pool 3 hours before closing time just because she wanted an early finish.

I guarantee her finish time was 10pm as she would have to clean up and close down after the 9pm kick out time.

The fact she locked the doors to stop anyone else coming in is unbelievable.

There should be cameras in the public areas so it's not like you can't prove you are being truthful.

Legally and contractually she wasn't able to make you leave, which is why the police or management weren't called,

but she made it so difficult and uncomfortable that she spoiled your enjoyment and you all ended up leaving.

Tb1969 − Locking the door to be spiteful is dangerous and a fire violation.

She locked it so no other people came in to ruin her 6pm to 9pm. You should report all of this behavior.

This group criticized the decision to lock the exit early, calling it unreasonable and potentially unsafe

Open_Equal_1515 − locking the exit is a bold customer service technique 😂

Riddleboxboy − Shes a b__ch if the hours are until 9, then she damn sure is supposed to sit there til 9 You all are nta

These commenters suggested the lifeguard failed to communicate clearly and handled the situation poorly

arifaix − NTA. I will say she was hinting at closing early rather than simply using her “big girl words”

which is why she got annoyed that you didn’t move. Her fault entirely though for not being able to communicate properly.

Potential_Web_4092 − She got what she wanted. An early mark and probably paid up until 9pm.

Do you think the swimmers should have noticed the employee’s frustration and left early, or was the worker responsible for staying until closing time? How should businesses handle situations when employees want to leave before official hours? Share your thoughts below!
