Man Buys Everyone Expensive Donuts, Then Gets Called Selfish for Finally Buying Only His Own

A thoughtful gesture can quickly lose its charm when the people you’re trying to treat take it for granted.

This Redditor says they recently stopped at a specialty donut shop and spent nearly $40 buying everyone’s favorite flavors, even asking each household member what they wanted ahead of time. After a long night of work, they looked forward to finally enjoying the two donuts they had picked for themselves, only to discover someone else had eaten them.

The disappointment only grew when the remaining donuts disappeared as well. So the following weekend, they bought treats for themselves alone, a decision that unexpectedly sparked accusations of selfishness.

A generous shopper stops sharing treats after his household repeatedly takes them for granted

'AITAH for refusing buy more donuts?'

I was out early last Sunday morning and decided to grab some donuts from this fancy spot that I don’t get to go to very often.

I asked everyone what donuts they wanted and was willing to buy 2 for everyone. I grabbed all the donuts, 8 total, and it was almost $40.

I drove an hour home and put the donuts on the counter and was exhausted from working all night, so I went to bed.

When I woke up that evening, I was so excited to have my donuts, only to open the box and find the two I picked out were gone.

The ones that were leftover were ones that other people in the household specifically requested.

I didn’t get angry, I was mostly just disappointed, but it ruined my appetite for a donut, so I took them and put them in a Tupperware for later.

Got ready and went to work.

When I got home, I wanted something sweet, so I went for a donut only to find my Tupperware empty in the sink.

So not only did I not get a donut that I wanted, I didn’t get a donut at all, AND I was left dishes to wash.

I asked everyone and was told, “sorry I thought because you left them you didn’t want them”.. I was beyond disappointed.

This Sunday, I was out working and decided to stop and get myself a donut at the same shop.

I got myself two donuts and ate them both on the ride home. I threw my trash into the can before I went inside and went to bed.

When I woke up in the evening I was questioned about where the rest of the donuts were because someone saw the packaging in the trash outside.

I explained that I just grabbed some for myself this morning because I didn’t get one last week

and I was called selfish and an a__hole because if I was by the shop I could have gotten some for everyone.

So, AITAH for not dropping another $40 on donuts for everyone? (Oh, and I didn’t even receive one “thank you” for getting the donuts the first time).

Small disappointments can reveal much bigger feelings when they happen repeatedly. It is rarely just about the donut itself. Often, what hurts is the feeling that an effort was invisible or that someone’s kindness became something others expected rather than appreciated.

In this situation, the original poster was not upset because they missed out on a pastry. They were hurt because they went out of their way to do something thoughtful for the household, spent their own money, made sure everyone received something they wanted, and then discovered that nobody considered saving their portion.

The first incident may have seemed minor from the perspective of others, but from the poster’s view it communicated something painful: everyone enjoyed the gesture, but nobody respected the person who made it happen.

A different perspective is that the household members may not have understood the emotional meaning behind the donuts. They may have genuinely assumed that anything left on the counter or in the refrigerator was available. However, that assumption ignores an important part of shared living: consideration.

When someone specifically buys something for themselves after working hard and sharing with others first, that item should not automatically become communal property. The conflict is less about food and more about whether people recognize boundaries.

Family therapist Nedra Glover Tawwab explains that boundaries help people communicate their needs and prevent resentment from building in relationships. She notes that healthy boundaries are not acts of selfishness; they are ways of creating mutual respect and clearer expectations.

Psychologist Harriet Lerner has similarly written about how resentment often develops when people repeatedly give more than they receive while avoiding direct conversations about fairness and appreciation.

This perspective helps explain why the poster’s decision to buy two donuts only for themselves was reasonable. They were not refusing to help someone in need or deliberately denying others something important.

They were simply responding to a pattern where their generosity was taken for granted. Continuing to provide the same favor without addressing the problem could create even more frustration.

At the same time, this situation could have been avoided with a simple conversation. The household may need clearer rules, such as asking before eating something that was purchased for a specific person or replacing items that someone else bought. Small acts of consideration prevent bigger conflicts.

The larger lesson is that generosity works best when it is appreciated, not assumed. A person who enjoys doing kind things for others should not feel guilty for occasionally choosing themselves. Sometimes buying your own donut is not selfish—it is a reminder that your effort matters too.

Here’s the input from the Reddit crowd:

These commenters called the household selfish and entitled for eating OP’s donuts, then demanding more

Mysterious_Drop1122 − You live with ingrates. What a terrible story. Then you are accused of being selfish? !

The nerve. No you are not the AH but the people you live with are. No more buying donuts for them.

Agile-Entry-5603 − NTA First of all, who is everyone? Second, if you paid for them and got none, you weren’t wrong.

I would just tell them”everyone” what happened is the result of their selfish, greedy behavior. You don’t owe them anything.

Kittycelt − They sound petty and entitled. Childish. I wouldn't buy them any next time either.

Honestly, I might never buy them any again with this attitude.

They could apologize like mature adults because they know they ate someone else's donuts when they were eating something other than the ones they asked for.

And those better be really good donuts for 40 bucks/8! They don't deserve $40 treats with this behavior.

I'm glad you eventually got your donuts and I'm sorry you live with such selfish people. NTA

These Redditors said anyone wanting donuts should pay in advance or buy their own

NorthernLitUp − Who exactly is "everyone? " Regardless, you don't owe anyone donuts.

If they want them, get money from them up front. No mo ney, no donuts. NTA.

Cipher915 − NTA "Where are our donuts? " At the grocery store. Dozen of day old donuts for like $8 dollars are what dickheads get.

This group advised OP to keep future treats hidden or stored privately

Objective-Pound2185 − NTA. Consider this a lesson, next time buy 2 for yourself, take them to your own room and don't even tell anyone you picked some up

ManaWolfX8 − Totally not the a__hole. My household is similar, if you don't eat it soon it'll get eaten.

I have a hiding place for my stuff and I'll eat it when I want to.

These users suggested confronting the hypocrisy by reminding everyone who ate OP’s share first

Serious-Big2 − It's times like this if you were called selfish, you can ask if you were selfish last week when everyone ate yours.

Historical_Agent9426 − NTA “My understanding from last week was that people just ate all the donuts without any concern for others.

Also, did you give me money for the donuts? Did you even thank me?

Yeah, if you think I am being selfish, it’s because I am just matching your energy. 🤷🏻‍♀️”

AphasiaRiver − NTA This happened at my house. My daughter bought pastries after asking us what we wanted.

We thought she already ate her choices so we ate the one she picked, but we should have paid attention.

She was so disappointed that my husband went and bought her favorites for her the next day. Mistakes happen but if you care you try to correct them.

If someone bought your favorite treat and everyone else ate it before you got the chance, would you buy for the group again? Or would you decide that kindness should never become an obligation? Share your thoughts below!
