Worker Stops Covering Coworker’s Shifts After Discovering Her “Emergencies” Were Not Real

A coworker’s repeated requests for help became a source of frustration after one employee discovered she may not have been honest about why she needed coverage.

This Redditor says she spent four months regularly covering her coworker’s shifts because she believed the coworker was dealing with family problems and health issues. She agreed out of kindness and appreciated the extra income, even using the money to build savings.

However, after declining one request, she unexpectedly saw her coworker out shopping with friends on the same day she claimed to have a family emergency. Feeling misled, she decided to stop covering shifts and told her coworker to speak with management about her schedule. Now some colleagues think she overreacted, while she feels her trust was taken advantage of.

'AITJ for telling my coworker I won't cover her shifts anymore after finding out why she always needs them covered?'

for the past 4 months I've been picking up my coworker's shifts pretty regularly.

she'd text me saying she had a family emergency or felt sick and I always said yes because I felt bad for her.

we work at a fairly busy cafe and I figured she was just going through a rough patch.

I even used some of the extra money I made on Ѕtake to build up some savings which felt good for once.

last week she texted me asking to cover but I already had plans so I said no for the first time.

later that day I was at the mall and ran into her with a group of friends, totally fine, laughing, shopping.

the same morning she told me she had a "family situation" and couldn't make it in.

I didn't say anything when I saw her, just kind of processed it.

but when she texted me again the following week asking if I could cover

I told her I'm not able to anymore and that she should sort out her schedule with the actual manager.

she got pretty cold with me after that and told a couple coworkers that I "let her down".

now two of them think I'm being petty and that whatever she does on her day off is her business.

but like she lied to me? multiple times? I was rearranging my whole week thinking she was dealing with something serious.

AITJ for just quietly cutting off covering for her without explaining why?

Trust is often built through small acts of kindness, but it can disappear just as quickly when someone feels their generosity has been taken for granted.

Many people are willing to help a struggling coworker because they understand that life can become overwhelming. The painful part is not always doing the extra work; it is discovering that the reason you sacrificed your own time may not have been what you were told.

In this situation, the original poster was not upset simply because her coworker enjoyed a day off. She was hurt because she believed she was responding to genuine emergencies. For four months, she rearranged her own schedule and accepted extra shifts because she thought she was helping someone facing difficult circumstances.

When she later saw her coworker relaxing with friends after claiming she could not work due to a family issue, the problem became one of honesty and trust. OP felt that her kindness had been used without her informed consent.

Some people may argue that a coworker’s personal time is not anyone else’s concern. They are right that someone does not need to spend every day off dealing with a crisis. However, the important distinction is that OP’s coworker was not only taking time away from work; she was asking another person to carry the consequences of her absence.

There is a difference between needing occasional support and repeatedly creating situations where someone else feels responsible for rescuing you. The deeper issue is not what the coworker did after work. It is whether OP was given truthful information when being asked for a favor.

Organizational psychologist Adam Grant has discussed the importance of boundaries in workplace relationships, explaining that helping others can be positive but becomes harmful when generosity is repeatedly exploited or when expectations become one-sided. He emphasizes that sustainable helping requires balance rather than unlimited availability.

Research on workplace trust also shows that reliability and honesty strongly influence how colleagues cooperate and support each other.

This perspective shows why OP’s reaction is understandable. She was not required to investigate her coworker’s private life or demand proof of every emergency.

She simply reached a point where she no longer felt comfortable offering the same level of support. Refusing future shift coverage is not the same as punishing someone; it is setting a boundary after trust has been damaged.

A healthier workplace solution would be for the coworker to communicate honestly with management about her availability instead of relying on one colleague to absorb the impact.

OP also may benefit from explaining her decision calmly if the issue continues, focusing on the repeated requests and loss of trust rather than attacking her coworker personally. Helping others is admirable, but kindness works best when it is based on mutual respect rather than guilt.

See what others had to share with OP:

These commenters agreed the issue was not her personal time but using OP’s days off without consent

Frequent-Local-4788 − NTJ - if she was using her actual days off for leisure activities, your co-workers would be right.

But she didn’t. She used YOUR days off and lied to you to make it happen!

Existing_Purpose5049 − They’re absolutely right, what she does on a day off is her business! This isn’t a day off, she’s supposed to be working.

PeriwinkleParadise95 − Yes whatever she does on her day off is not your business, but this wasn’t her day off.

It was a day she took off by manipulating someone else into working for her.

If your coworkers feel so bad for her when she has a mall walking emergency, they can cover for her.

It’s a pity because if she ever does have a true emergency, she’ll be left out with her sheep for the wolf to eat. But that’s on her, not on...

These Redditors suggested coworkers should volunteer to cover shifts instead of pressuring OP

Evening_Delay_1856 − To the people who tell you that whatever she does on her day off is her business, you need to tell them that it wasn’t her day off.

It was yours. Tell them they can work for her from now on.

SalaryStraight3363 − NTJ you said no why should that be a problem? She could ask someone else and you don’t owe her any explanation

She asked a question and you answered Tell the coworkers that are giving you a hard time to pick up her shifts They need to mind their own business

gdognoseit − NTJ Your coworkers that are giving you a hard time can volunteer to cover for her.

This group supported OP’s right to say no and shared similar workplace experiences

Imaginary_Fox_6846 − I used to have a co worker that pulled the same thing on me.

Once I said no and my boss called me into his office to let me know that I shouldn’t have said no.

I explained how every week he took one of my day offs and needed them to visit my parents in 2 different nursing homes.

He had no idea how many times the coworker did that to me. My boss apologized to me and had a talking to my coworker. It never happened again 😉

trigurlSeattle − I think only cover her if you want to. If you are busy then don’t.

Was the employee right to stop covering shifts, or should she have confronted her coworker before walking away? Share your thoughts below!
