Wife Stops Reminding Husband About Her Birthday To See If He Finally Remembers

Sometimes the hardest relationship test is the one the other person does not even know they are taking.

According to this Redditor, gift giving is one of the main ways she expresses affection, while her husband has never placed much importance on presents or special occasions. Even so, he is fully aware that forgotten birthdays have been a painful pattern throughout her life.

Rather than reminding him that her birthday is approaching, she has intentionally chosen to say nothing, wanting to see whether he remembers without any prompting. She worries that if he forgets, it will reopen old wounds, but she also wonders if giving him a silent test is unfair.

A wife waits to see if her husband remembers her birthday without any reminders, fearing disappointment

'I think my (35F) husband (38M) has forgotten my birthday. I am testing this by not reminding him'

I am a person who loves to show love by gift giving, and to a degree I expect gifts at time.

I like to feel appreciated with acknowledgement and even small gifts.

I have a past of my parents/siblings/cousins forget about my birthday, and my husband is aware of my past and my preferences about birthdays.

My husband isn't big on gifts- getting or recieving.

My birthday is coming up and it comes shortly after Canada Day- which I find is a reminder for most people.

My daughter has remembered my birthday is coming up (she's generally forgetful) and is unable to get gifts for us without another adult helping.

My best friend (34F) has reached out to see if we can do something together.

My problem is I think my husband will forget until the morning of, or completely forget.

I haven’t mentioned or prompted conversations that may remind him.

I feel the urge to find out if he will forget- something that will hurt me due to past experiences, but is that unfair?

We have known each other for over 10 years and have been married for 7.

Share your opinions and what you would do please. Thank you.

Few things hurt more than feeling invisible to the people we love. Birthdays are rarely only about a date on a calendar. For many people, they represent a deeper emotional need: being remembered, valued, and intentionally celebrated. When someone has experienced years of being overlooked, a forgotten birthday can reopen old feelings that have little to do with the present moment.

In this situation, the original poster is not simply waiting to see whether her husband remembers a celebration. She is testing whether he understands something emotionally important to her.

Her desire for recognition comes from a history of feeling forgotten by family members, and she has already communicated that birthdays and small gestures make her feel loved. Her husband, however, appears to express affection differently.

Since he does not naturally place the same importance on gifts, he may not experience a forgotten birthday as a reflection of love. The challenge is that both perspectives are real: OP wants intentional effort, while her husband may not realize that effort carries emotional meaning for her.

A different perspective is that the “test” itself may create a situation where both partners lose. OP is hoping her husband remembers because that would reassure her that he listens and cares.

But if he forgets, the pain may feel like confirmation of an old wound rather than an isolated mistake. At the same time, her husband may believe he is being loving in other ways and not understand that this specific form of appreciation matters so much. Sometimes couples are not lacking love; they are speaking different emotional languages.

Relationship researcher Dr. Gary Chapman, author of The 5 Love Languages, explains that people often give and receive affection in different ways, such as through gifts, quality time, words, or acts of service. While his framework is not a clinical theory, it highlights how partners can miss each other’s emotional signals when they assume their own preferred style is universal.

Relationship experts at the Gottman Institute similarly emphasize that healthy couples communicate their needs directly rather than relying on their partner to guess correctly.

This does not mean OP’s feelings are unreasonable. Wanting a partner to remember meaningful occasions is a valid emotional need. However, creating a hidden test may place the entire relationship moment on a single outcome.

A forgotten birthday would hurt, but it would not automatically prove that her husband does not care. The more important question is whether he responds with understanding once he knows how much it affects her.

A healthier approach may be to have a conversation before resentment builds. OP can explain that birthdays are meaningful because they make her feel seen, not because she expects expensive gifts. Her husband may not naturally think the same way, but loving someone often means learning the small things that make them feel valued.

The strongest relationships are not built on partners who never disappoint each other; they are built on partners who are willing to understand the disappointment and grow from it.

Here’s what Redditors had to say:

These commenters warned that silently testing the husband may only set OP up for more pain

CrystalizedinCali − I guess the question is okay it’s your birthday and he forgets or remembers the morning of…what is your goal with that information?

Now you know and then what?

white-as-styrofoam − i understand this completely, but you’re also setting yourself up to be hurt. no easy answers here

floer289 − I don't know about fair, but if you are just passively waiting to see if your husband will fail you, then you are setting yourself up for disappointment.

Better might be to talk to him about something you would like to do on your birthday.

These Redditors felt repeatedly forgetting important occasions shows a serious lack of care and appreciation

itschickentime2001 − To be honest, it would make me feel not important or appreciated enough if my partner forgot my birthday.

It sucks OP. If he does forget, you should tell him your feelings. His reaction will tell you everything you need to know

carr0ts − The same thing happened to me many times over. I no longer have a husband.

superwashmerinowool − That’s s__tty. Imo it’s completely unreasonable and ridiculous that someone married for 10+ years could forget their spouses birthday.

Like that is completely out of the question. I see from your comments he also conveniently forgets Mother’s Day and your wedding anniversary.

It doesn’t seem like he cares to give you anything special for the occasion.

If I were in your situation: I definitely remember my own birthday lol so I’m gonna take myself and my friend to the spa for a nice day.

If I had ANY inkling that my spouse would forget, I’d have something already lined up for my special day.

ETA I say this with love: STAND THE F__K UP FOR YOURSELF LADY

This group encouraged OP to clearly communicate what she needs instead of waiting for him to fail

MagneticLas − I understand your impulse to test him BUT can I make a suggestion that I think will be much more healthy and mature on your part?

Say something like this to him now: “My birthday is coming up soon. I feel worried that you will forget.

I want you to know how important you acknowledging and celebrating my birthday is to me.

What I need is for you to do something special for me.

Do you need any suggestions or help because I can give you some ideas on what I would like to do that day. ”

When a person is in a relationship it is their responsibility to communicate their needs to their partner.

Your husband may fail you but you will be doing the right thing by communicating.

And if he listens to you and does celebrate your birthday, then it is a win for both of you.

JipC1963 − You DO realize this scenario is quite ridiculous in this era of computers and smartphones, right?

You should sit down with your husband one last time and ask him if 1) he remembers that your birthday is coming up and

2) if not, ask him WHY when it's obviously important to you?

You could set multiple reminders on his smartphone (one month, one week, one day before) so he is on notice,

but more concerning is your statement that your husband "isn't big on gifts - giving or receiving. "

WHY? Again, especially when it's important to YOU. OR is it simply that he's inept and has ZERO clue what to get you?

If this is the only "serious" problem in your relationship then the "easy" fix is to stop expecting ANYTHING from your husband and buy your own "gift! "

OR create an Amazon folder called "Wife Gift Ideas" and start saving items you'd like that you won't necessarily buy for yourself. Please believe me, YOU'RE NOT ALONE!"

I've been married over 40 years and my husband has a difficult time buying gifts for me unless I hold his hand while he does it. LOL HAPPY BIRTHDAY, dear!

These users understood letting him forget so he might finally recognize the consequences of his lack of effort

tomatofrogfan − With all the comments asking for your motivation or wanted outcome, I’ll just throw my hat in the ring and say I support you doing this.

I’m guessing he doesn’t acknowledge or makes excuses for his lack of effort around these days meant to celebrate you that he seemingly can’t remember.

Letting him actually forget might make him understand that he needs to be more proactive in that area,

and that he’s a f__king a__hole for forgetting his wife’s birthday.

daisyiris − My husband often forgot or ignored my birthday in the early years of our very long marriage. I love to give gifts and celebrate special occasions.

Him, not so much. I played it low key and ignored him. I have lots of people that celebrate with me. I will not beg.

After about 5 years, the light bulb went off for him after his older sister yelled at him. She asked me what he got me for my birthday.

I told her nothing, not even a card. I then excused myself. He never forgot a birthday after that. I do not know what she said.

My sister in law rocks. Oldest daughters do not take prisoners.

Should she wait and see what happens, or should she tell her husband exactly how important the day is? Share your thoughts below!
