He Failed Kids Who Couldn’t Pass the Swim Test, Then His Coworkers Named Him the Worst Guard

At 18, being called the “worst swim tester” by your coworkers probably isn’t the kind of workplace recognition you hope for.

But for one young lifeguard in the Pacific Northwest, the title came after he repeatedly refused to pass children who he believed were not strong enough swimmers to safely enter the deep end.

His coworkers thought he was being unnecessarily harsh. Some even mocked him after children cried when he failed their tests.

He saw it differently. To him, a swim test was not a popularity contest. It was a safety check. If he would be worried watching a child swim in his zone from the lifeguard stand, he didn’t feel comfortable giving that child permission to enter deeper water.

That difference in judgment eventually turned into a workplace feud.

'AITA for making a kid cry for not swimming well during the swim test?'

For context, I am an 18 year old lifeguard at my local pool in the United States PNW, and I have been working there for atleast a few years.

This summer I have been on the “swim test duty”, the swim test consists of a patron swimming down 10 yards and back (total 20 yards or 18 meters) while...

The swim test allows kids under the age of 18 to go to the deeper ends of the pool. So roughly a week and half ago from today, there was...

(took them roughly 30 seconds which is a little slow) and back which took them roughly 1 minute and 30 seconds with a very slow freestyle.

So before we go any further, my mentality for the swim test is if I am up in the stand and saw this kid, would I be worried about them...

So I ultimately fail this kid and say to him “Hey bud, sorry you failed the swim test, but you can always retake in a few minutes or wear a...

When I get down from the swim tests my coworkers look at me like I am a p__cho and tell me that I am messed up for failing this kid...

A week later from that day I fail a different kid for the same reason as last time (not swimming well back 10 yards), and that kid starts crying,

and my coworkers still went on my ass about failing him, then they go back to the kid and pass him for demonstrating a 5 second float on their back.

Now fast forward to today, we have this survey to see who is the best guard, worst guard, worst swim tester, and etc. I get nominated for first place for...

and after asking around I find out it’s because I made some kids cry after not passing them for the swim test.

Even thought in the past other people passed kids who were below the height limit to take the swim test. Now everyone who I work with is now mocking me...

So now I ask the question to you all, Am I The A__hole?.

UPDATE:. For clarification, the certain parameters needed to pass/fail the swim test are as follows:. 1. Demonstrate a continuous crawlstroke/freestyle down and back (20 yards in total)..

2. Demonstrate side breathing or roll overs onto back as a way to breath.

3. At no point in taking the swim test they are allowed to touch the bottom of the pool or cling onto the side rope/lane line..

4. The patron has to be above 4 feet tall to take the swim test,

5. The patron has to be above the age of 6 and below the age of 18 to take the swim test (Anyone above 18 does not have to take...

6. The patron has to complete the swim test in under a minute..

7. If the patron is not making any forward progress during the swim test, it’s an immediate fail.. My supervisor gave me these general rules about the swim test.

I know my delivery to the kid is not so great, I will try to get better at it. When I come to my job, my number one priority is...

Lifeguards are the first line of defense at the pool and it’s my job to ensure the safety of everyone.

The Swim Test Was Supposed to Mean Something

The lifeguard had worked at his local pool for several years and was assigned to swim-test duty that summer.

The test had specific requirements. A child had to be over six and at least four feet tall, swim 20 yards continuously using freestyle, demonstrate a way to breathe such as side breathing or rolling onto their back, avoid touching the bottom or grabbing the lane line, and complete the test within one minute. A swimmer making no forward progress automatically failed.

One day, a child around seven or eight years old attempted the test.

The first 10 yards took roughly 30 seconds. The return trip took about a minute and a half, with what the lifeguard described as a very slow freestyle stroke.

He failed the child.

He then tried to soften the news by saying, “Hey bud, sorry you failed the swim test, but you can always retake in a few minutes or wear a life jacket.”

The child burst into tears.

That reaction apparently bothered his coworkers more than the swimming itself.

They criticized him for failing a young child who clearly struggled in the water and suggested he should teach the child how to swim.

But teaching swimming lessons wasn’t his job.

His job, as he understood it, was to determine whether the swimmer could safely handle the deeper area.

Then It Happened Again

About a week later, another child failed for essentially the same reason. The swimmer managed to complete the distance but did not demonstrate the level of swimming ability the lifeguard believed was required.

Again, the child cried.

Again, his coworkers criticized him.

Then they passed the child after the swimmer demonstrated a five-second back float.

That was when the lifeguard started questioning whether the pool even had a consistent standard.

If the rules were supposed to protect children, what happened when one guard enforced them while another interpreted them more loosely?

The situation eventually became almost comical.

The pool held an informal survey asking employees to vote for things such as best guard, worst guard, and worst swim tester.

The lifeguard received 70% of the votes for worst swim tester.

The reason?

He had made children cry by failing them.

His coworkers began mocking him and calling him cruel.

Safety and Compassion Do Not Have to Be Opposites

Former lifeguards responding online largely understood the concern. Drowning is a serious risk, and swimming ability can deteriorate quickly when a child becomes frightened, tired, or overwhelmed.

The American Red Cross emphasizes that children should be supervised closely around water and that swim ability should be assessed realistically rather than assumed. Its water-safety guidance also stresses that children need appropriate swimming skills and should have layers of protection around pools. American Red Cross Water Safety

That supports the basic instinct behind the lifeguard’s decision: a child being upset does not automatically mean the safety decision was wrong.

However, there was another issue that several Redditors noticed.

If multiple children were crying after failing, perhaps the delivery needed work.

There is a big difference between telling a child, “You failed,” and telling them, “You’re not quite ready for the deep end yet, but you can practice and try again.”

The second version still protects the child without making the result feel like a personal failure.

That distinction matters because the lifeguard’s responsibility isn’t only to enforce a rule. It is also to communicate with children who may already be nervous about swimming.

The Bigger Problem May Have Been the Pool

The Reddit discussion ultimately revealed that the lifeguard’s workplace had a consistency problem.

Some commenters considered him completely justified. Others thought everyone involved shared some responsibility. If one guard fails a child for not meeting the stated criteria while another passes the same type of swimmer, the children and parents are receiving mixed messages.

And that is much more concerning than an unpopular swim tester.

The lifeguard said his number one priority was safety, and based on the criteria he later provided, his decisions were not arbitrary. He was trying to apply the standards he had been given.

But his coworkers also raised a legitimate point about how those standards were being communicated.

A good safety system should not depend on which teenager happens to be sitting in the lifeguard chair that afternoon.

Here's what Redditors had to say:

Several former lifeguards said they had also failed children who could not demonstrate adequate swimming ability.

ProseccoPeonies − NTA. People don’t take drowning as seriously as they should.

--I-have-opinions-- − NTA. A kid crying because they failed isn't proof you were wrong it's proof the standard matters.

You judged their swimming honestly and safely, and told them kindly they could retry. Your coworkers passing kids on a 5-second float or below the height limit is the actual...

Being unpopular for holding the line on pool safety doesn't make you the a__hole.

anglflw − INFO: What is the actually passing criteria for the test?

Yes_Leeks − I would change that wording. Don’t say “you failed. ” Say “you’re almost there, but you need some more practice before I can let you go in the...

Ask if you can talk with their grown-up if that’s relevant and show them how to help.

L1mpD − NTA. Worst swim tester seems like a badge of honor

fashion4fun − NTA for failing kids who struggle to complete the test - when I was a lifeguard I did the same! However, if you’re often making them cry, perhaps...

Others argued that being voted “worst swim tester” might actually be a strange badge of honor if the alternative was passing children who were not ready.

AnIcyReception − NAH I think you need to discuss what the rules for the swim test are and why they would pass the kids you failed. Your reasoning is sound,...

Pokegirl_11_ − ESH. You because if multiple kids are crying there’s an issue in your delivery, your employer because they need to give you a more objective rubric for this...

more training in administering it, and more feedback/assessment/supervision than some kind of high school superlatives game. Sounds like a typical crappy teenage job, sorry.

please_dont246 − Former lifeguard. Not enough info. You haven’t shared the actual criteria for the test, but I do distinctly remember the type of person who would power trip over...

Ippus_21 − NTA This is a safety issue. You are a life guard. You're doing your job. If the standard is "we only allow people who can demonstrate a competent...

This sounds like an administrative issue, where pool managers are failing to establish a clear expectation with all the guards. And it's going to lead to increased-risk situations.

Even with guards on duty, it's putting kids at risk. Every potential save carries additional risk for the guard and the patron. Source: I was a lifeguard in my youth....

They have these standards in place for a reason.

Final Thoughts

The lifeguard probably wasn’t wrong to take the swim test seriously.

If a seven-year-old takes nearly two minutes to swim 20 yards and struggles to demonstrate the required stroke, allowing them into deep water simply because they might feel bad about failing defeats the purpose of having a test in the first place.

But being technically right doesn’t mean there is nothing to improve.

Children can be protected without being humiliated. A failed swim test should feel like a safety checkpoint, not a judgment on whether someone is “good” or “bad” at swimming.

The real problem may not be the guard who takes the rules seriously. It may be a workplace where the rules aren’t being enforced consistently.

So, was he the cruel swim tester his coworkers claimed, or was he simply the one person willing to take the test seriously?
