Navy Recruit Keeps Getting Reassigned Until One Crewman Explains The Real Problem

Some jokes take a long road just to arrive at one perfectly timed word. This submarine story does exactly that, using a confused new recruit and a string of pointless job changes to set up the punchline.

On his first day aboard, a Navy recruit is ordered to watch the periscope entrance. Fifteen minutes later, he is moved to the mess hall. A few dishes in, he gets reassigned again to the supply room.

After being bounced around the submarine all day, he finally asks another crewman whether this kind of thing happens often. The crewman does not seem surprised at all. Keep reading to see why his explanation turns the entire story into a joke about something Reddit users know very well.

A new Navy recruit keeps getting reassigned around the submarine and starts wondering why

'A new Navy recruit has his first day on the submarine.'

He speaks with the officer, who assigns him his post.

"Go stand at the periscope entry-way, and make sure no unauthorized personnel touch the periscope."

The recruit follows orders, and stands by the periscope.

After 15 minutes, the officer stops by.. "Son I'm changing your post to the mess hall. Go in there and start washing some dishes."

The recruit obeys, and heads to the mess hall. He's cleaned about 3 dishes when the officer walks up again.

"Listen here recruit, your new post is in the supply room. I need you to make sure everything is strapped down tight, in case of rough waters."

The recruit again follows orders, and heads off to the supply room. There, he sees a crewman, moving some boxes.

"Hey there," says the recruit. "is it normal to keep getting reassigned to new posts all day? I haven't kept one position for more than 15 minutes!"

The crewman says "Oh yeah- this sub is full of reposts."

Some frustrations become funny the moment someone gives them the perfect name. Anyone who has been the newest person in a workplace knows the feeling: instructions change constantly, nobody explains why, and the newcomer has too little experience to know whether the chaos is normal. This joke takes that familiar uncertainty and quietly builds an elaborate naval setting around one painfully recognizable internet complaint.

The recruit behaves exactly as someone on their first day probably would. He does not challenge the officer when he is moved from guarding the periscope to washing dishes, then reassigned again after barely starting. Instead, he obeys. His confusion grows because every individual order sounds legitimate, while the overall pattern makes increasingly little sense.

Psychologically, that matters. Newcomers generally rely heavily on established members of a group to understand unwritten expectations, so asking another crewman whether constant reassignment is normal becomes the natural response.

There is also a clever second layer. Readers are encouraged to search for a submarine-related explanation. Perhaps this is hazing. Maybe the officer is testing obedience. Perhaps rapid reassignment is somehow part of naval training. The more seriously someone tries to interpret the story, the better positioned they become for the intentionally ridiculous answer.

Psychologist Thomas Shultz proposed that humor often involves incongruity and resolution: people encounter something that does not quite fit their existing interpretation, then discover another meaning that unexpectedly makes the pieces connect.

Humor researcher Rod Martin similarly discusses incongruity as an important element of many jokes, where expectations established by the setup are overturned or reinterpreted by the punchline.

That mechanism describes this joke almost perfectly. Throughout the setup, “post” means a naval assignment. The officer repeatedly changes the recruit’s post, so the audience naturally keeps that definition active. Then the crewman says the submarine is “full of reposts,” suddenly importing an entirely different meaning from internet culture.

The wordplay retroactively explains why the recruit had to be transferred so absurdly often. None of those jobs matters very much individually; their real purpose is to make “reposts” possible.

It is also a gentle parody of online communities. Anyone who spends enough time on forums eventually encounters the same stories, memes, questions, and jokes circulating again. Complaining about reposts has practically become its own recurring post—which makes the punchline slightly self-referential.

The best response to this joke might therefore be to enjoy it rather than investigate whether submarine personnel actually change assignments every fifteen minutes. And if someone has heard it before, that does not ruin the joke. It arguably completes it.

Here’s what the community had to contribute:

These users loved the joke and rewarded it with enthusiastic upvotes

[Reddit User] − That was G E N I U S.

TruthGetsBanned − Take your f__king upvote and GET THE F__K OUT!

Magpulp − Can't wait for this to be reposted in 3 weeks to get guilded to someone else. Great joke btw. Take your upvote, OC.

These commenters joked about Reddit’s endless cycle of reposting the same material

TooShiftyForYou − Why are reposts always upvoted more than original jokes? - Because you need to tell it to a redditor multiple times for them to get it.

Wisehashbrown − Post and repost were on a boat, post fell off, who was left?

These Redditors added more naval wordplay and submarine-related puns

lookinmymirror − Radio message on a ship: Help! We're sinking. German coastguard: wot are you sinking about?

Nighthawk1230 − This joke is very SUBstantial. Lots of depth and charge. Way to breach the surface of this topic.

These users enjoyed the navy angle even while admitting the joke fooled them

[Reddit User] − You had me all the way to the end. You’ve earned this upvote.

jeanle − Here for a navy joke to tell my friend who's from the navy. Guess the joke is on me.

[Reddit User] − Ugh. Been serving on subs for over 10 years now. The inaccuracies of sub life made me cringe. Still though. Have your upvote!

Did the final line catch you off guard, or did you spot “repost” coming from the first reassignment? And how long before this joke appears again pretending nobody has seen it?
