He Was Forced to Prove He Was Sick, So He Made Sure His Boss Regretted Asking

A restaurant worker was tired of being treated like a liar whenever illness showed up. After years of pushing through sickness, one employee finally stopped proving his pain and let a doctor speak instead.

A 26-year-old service worker shared a workplace story that started with a simple request for one sick day and turned into a lesson about trust, employee rights, and the strange workplace habit of making people prove they are unwell. Want the juicy details? Dive into the original story below!

A service worker uses doctor’s notes to assert sick leave rights after management repeatedly demanded proof of illness

'“You need a doctor’s note”'

I (26M) don’t like calling in to work. I hate passing up money and I usually won’t call in unless I’m already pretty sick.

I work in the service industry which as many of you know, is absolutely notorious for guilting sick employees

(a seriously ill person has made your food at a restaurant before at the direction of their manager, guaranteed)

and telling people they don’t provide health insurance that they need a doctors note to call in.

One year I got sick and didn’t want to work, and my employer forgot I had health insurance through my Dad.

I called in asking for one day off because I could hardly breathe or stay awake and I got the “wElL yOu NeEd A dOcToRs NoTe Or ItS aN uNeXsCuSeD...

and as someone who worked hard as hell for these people even when I was sick,

I was a little offended to basically be called a liar like I needed to prove to them I’d been wearing a mask at work for a reason.

But I did have good insurance through my Dad, so I went to the doctor, had them write me a note for four days off,

and went back into my job and handed it to my manager and said “here is my doctors note, and this is the date I will be back”.

And when they tried to do the same thing a few months later, I got a note for even more days and asked the doc to add a note about

when I would stop being infectious around the food we were serving people.

I have never been asked for a doctors note when I am sick again.

They know they can give me the one or two days I ask for or they can give me the week the doc gives me.

But I will not be working while sick if I do not want to.

Many people discover their true workplace boundaries only after they are pushed past their limits. For employees who depend on their paycheck, calling in sick can feel like admitting weakness or letting others down. This becomes even harder in industries where workers are expected to push through illness, even when doing so risks their own health and the well-being of others.

In this situation, the OP was not trying to avoid responsibility or escape a difficult shift. In fact, his story shows the opposite: he had built a reputation as someone dependable who rarely called out unless he genuinely could not function. The frustration came from feeling that his honesty was being questioned.

Instead of receiving support when he was struggling to breathe and stay awake, he was treated as though he needed to prove he was sick enough to deserve rest. The doctor’s note became less about medical confirmation and more about workplace trust and respect.

A different perspective is that OP’s response was not really about winning an argument with his employer; it was about changing the power dynamic. Many workers in service industries experience pressure to prioritize staffing needs over their own health.

Managers may focus on immediate scheduling problems while overlooking the consequences of having sick employees interact with customers. OP recognized that the rule intended to discourage unnecessary absences could also be used in a situation where someone was genuinely ill.

By following the employer’s own requirement, he forced the workplace to acknowledge the seriousness of medical guidance rather than personal convenience.

Occupational health experts have long emphasized that workplace illness policies should balance attendance expectations with protecting employees and the public. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that workers with respiratory illness take appropriate precautions and stay away from others when they may spread infection.

The agency highlights that preventing workplace transmission is an important part of protecting communities, especially in environments involving food service and close contact.

This perspective explains why OP’s decision mattered beyond his own situation. Working while seriously ill may seem like dedication, but it can create risks for coworkers and customers.

A healthy workplace should not depend on employees proving they are suffering before they are allowed to recover. The fact that OP’s employer stopped demanding notes after seeing medical documentation suggests the issue may have been less about policy and more about whether employees would challenge unfair expectations.

At the same time, this story highlights a broader workplace lesson: reliable employees are often the ones most likely to ignore their own needs. Because they rarely ask for help, their occasional absence may be judged more harshly than someone who frequently misses work.

OP’s experience is a reminder that responsibility does not mean sacrificing personal health at every opportunity. A good employee is not someone who never gets sick; it is someone who understands when showing up would create a bigger problem. Sometimes protecting yourself is also a way of protecting everyone around you.

These are the responses from Reddit users:

These commenters criticized workplace cultures that pressure sick employees to work instead of recovering

SlowAd2563 − I was really hoping that there would be 2 good things to come out of covid. ..

it being socially acceptable to wear masks in public when you have mild symptoms,

and people not being expected to work when they feel too sick to do so. .. Oh well. .. at least we still have the inflation. ..

Ultrarandom − I completely forgot which sub this was because in my country, if the employer requests a doctors note for 1-2 days sick,

they are the ones who have to pay for you to go get it. Also confused me about the "passing up money" because of mandatory sick leave.

I really feel sorry for Americans and the dystopia that is normalized over there compared to the rest of the west.

Only_One_Kenobi − Two takeaways here 1. Assuming this is USA because I doubt there are many other countries where staff are treated this poorly.

2. This is why quarantine laws were necessary during the pandemic.

These Redditors shared experiences where strict doctor-note policies led to longer absences

Rachel_Silver − I had a PCP who shared my attitude about requiring doctors' notes. He'd make them say whatever I wanted.

I also liked to say, "I can't get an appointment until tomorrow morning, so I guess I'll be out for two days. "

StinkypieTicklebum − My experience is that doctors will become annoyed and give you more time off as a ‘finger up’ to the teacher or boss.

okcumputer − They pull this s__t from time to time at my job. We get a fair amount of paid sick leave, but they can request a note.

Every single time it happens, that person miraculously needs a week off and it fucks everyone. It’s pretty glorious.

LaylaWalsh007 − Same here. My employer got rid off two paid sick days without a doctors cert recently.

If I'm paying to see the doctor I'm getting a sick note is at least for a week and enjoy the extra free time.

These commenters supported standing up for health needs and refusing unreasonable workplace demands

Fkingcherokee − I hurt almost my entire body doing out-of-the-usual work at my job.

The next day I was asked to do more out-of-the-usual work and told my boss that I couldn't and had to let my body heal.

My boss told me that I needed a doctor's note if I needed to only do the work in my job description.

It turns out I had a minor tear in my meniscus and everything else was just rightfully sore from hard work.

I got a note for the rest of the week off, 15 minute breaks every 2 hours on return, and no crouching at all for over a month.

That was the day management learned that I'm not bullshitting if I say I can't do something.

I also made mention that the doctor I went to deals with workplace injuries a lot,

which might be part of why they now trust me to listen to my own body instead of going to a professional.

CreepyOldGuy63 − I’ve told my employers my doctors note would be my letter of resignation. If they don’t trust me I don’t want to be there.

Jay_JWLH − I'm more worried about the other workers who can't afford a doctor's visit.

Should employers trust workers more, or are doctor’s notes necessary protection? How would you handle a boss who demanded proof every time you felt unwell? Share your thoughts below!
