Pregnant Woman Learns Her MIL Plans to Recreate Every Boundary Her Daughter Refused

At 36 weeks pregnant, one woman should probably be arranging tiny socks and wondering whether babies need seventeen nearly identical blankets. Instead, she is preparing for a boundary battle with a mother-in-law who appears to have drafted an entire custody calendar before the child has taken his first breath.

The MIL was previously denied delivery-room access, instant birth announcements, unrestricted babysitting, and overnight visits by her own daughter. Now she seems convinced her son’s baby offers a sparkling second chance to collect every experience she missed.

The future mother is less enthusiastic, especially because her husband repeatedly accepts his mother’s version of events. Want the full family drama? Dive into the original story below.

A pregnant woman discovered that her MIL viewed the new baby as compensation for every boundary her daughter had established

'MIL wants all the things SIL didn’t want from her'

I (31F) am currently 36 weeks pregnant with my husband’s (34M) and I’s first child, a little boy.

This will be the first grandson for both of our families but both my brother and husband’s sister each have three girls so not the first grandchild for either side.

From the moment we told my MIL we were pregnant she was already saying that this child will have her more involved and hands on….

which was weird in the moment and I didn’t understand exactly what she meant until I asked my husband for more clarity.

Well, it turns out my SIL knew her own mother is crazy and didn’t (& still doesn’t) let my MIL do a lot of the things she wants to.

For example, MIL wanted to be in the delivery room for every baby and be the first to let everyone know the gender as well as announce it on social...

MY SIL is tough so she had her blocked from the hospital and didn’t let her come over until weeks later,

which makes sense since her first two girls were born during Covid.

MIL took to Facebook saying how unfair it is to exclude family from helping during the critical moments of a newborn’s life and how grandmothers should be there for all...

SIL gave her the ultimatum to takedown the post or never ever meet her girls.

They eventually made up but SIL still has major boundaries.

She will not do sleepovers with MIL, MIL can only watch the girls at their house, no driving anywhere together, etc/you get my point.

This is where my problem with my MIL comes in. She loves going to my husband and make herself look like the victim, which he falls for all the time.

So during the years of my SIL establishing boundaries MIL was telling her sob story to him and how things will be different when he has kids.

Now she is presently saying how excited she is to be in my delivery room when little boy comes and how she’ll be the first to “experience it.”

She’s also fully expecting to have my son stay overnight at her house and how when he’s older he will stay for weeks in the summer (we live 5 hrs...

I’m sorry that your daughter knew you were crazy but just because I’m having a child doesn’t mean you get to make up those lost fantasies with me.

How do I handle her? How can I talk to my husband on not enabling her? HELP

The MIL’s expectations are not harmless simply because they arrive wrapped in grandmotherly excitement.

Childbirth is a medical event involving the pregnant patient, not a spectator experience distributed equally among relatives. The woman giving birth decides who can provide calm, trusted support.

ACOG states that pregnant patients retain decision-making authority during pregnancy, labor, and delivery, even when family members disagree. Its guidance on informed consent and patient autonomy is available here.

Support during labor can be valuable, but only when it is genuinely supportive. ACOG reports that continuous one-to-one support is associated with fewer negative assessments of the birth experience and a slightly greater likelihood of spontaneous vaginal birth.

That evidence supports choosing a calming advocate—not admitting an eager relative who may turn the room into a live family premiere. The labor-management guideline can be read here.

The larger conflict concerns boundaries between the couple and the husband’s family of origin. The MIL has framed her daughter’s limits as deprivation, then suggested her son will repair the injustice. That narrative places him in the role of rescuer and his wife in the role of obstacle before she has even stated her rules.

Licensed marriage and family therapist associate Liz Higgins recommends telling a partner about non-negotiable boundaries involving in-laws.

The principle is relevant here because unclear limits invite repeated negotiations during moments when the new mother will be tired, physically recovering, and protecting a newborn routine. Her Gottman Institute guidance is available here.

Family conflict during pregnancy is not merely irritating background noise. Research involving pregnant women has linked poorer partner relationships and reduced social support with higher maternal stress. A separate study found that family conflict was associated with increased symptoms of stress, anxiety, and depression during pregnancy.

These findings do not prove that one demanding MIL will create a medical crisis, but they reinforce why the husband should reduce preventable conflict rather than escort it into the delivery room.

The couple needs a written plan now: approved hospital visitors, who announces the birth, when relatives may visit, where they stay, whether photographs can be posted, and what babysitting arrangements require mutual consent. The husband should communicate those decisions as joint rules using “we,” not blame his wife as the household villain.

Most importantly, no promise about sleepovers or summer visits needs to be made before the baby exists outside the womb. Access should develop through trust, respect, safety, and the parents’ comfort—not through a grandmother’s claim that somebody else denied her the childhood experience she imagined.

This baby is not a replacement opportunity. The MIL can build a loving grandparent relationship, but she must build the one the parents permit rather than reclaim the fantasy her daughter rejected.

Here’s the comments of Reddit users:

These commenters urged OP to state firm, nonnegotiable boundaries about the birth and baby

opine704 − FFS - she's a loon. You can't "reason" with loons. So don't waste your breath or your energy. Take a page from SIL's playbook. Be blunt.

And often. And don't ask Tell. Tell your DH that he can have HIS mommy there when he gives birth but this time 'round, YOU are the patient.

And his mom is not going to be in the hospital, much less in the room, while YOU give birth. And he can either get on the bus or he...

So choose well. It's past time for you to stand your ground. Tell MIL no directly and often. No Gladys you won't be in the delivery room.

No Gladys you won't be taking MY child anywhere. No Gladys you won't be announcing anything.

Gladys do you WANT to be a grandma or do you want to be that lady we see every few years? Your DH is a separate issue.

I suspect he will follow the loudest woman in the room. Be that woman. Your MIL installed the buttons. Push them.

m0nster916816 − "Honey, you may want to set your mother straight now.

I will not be listening to her insert herself into my pregnancy, she absolutely 100% will not be in delivery room,

and she will not be taking my child anytime soon post birth. Get her reined in now before I turn into your sister. "

Puzzled-Dream1321 − You have your OWN mother for these things. You don't need MIL to stare your baby out of your vajayjay.

Tell your husband that his sister's boundaries apply for your family as well, and as it is HIS mother, it is up to him to apply these boundaries.

And remind him that YOU are his primary family now, he needs to put his mom not on the back seat, but straight on to the next bus!

Also tell him you do not need the additional stress to handle his mom. Again it is up to him. Stress this information NOW.

Tell him if he can't do this, if you can not rely on him to put up and maintain boundaries for the sake of his family, then you'll be needing...

Let him become very aware of the importance of these boundaries! Stay strong!

These Redditors said the husband was the central problem if he kept prioritizing his mother’s wishes

RegisterEither9711 − Follow your SIL's lead with setting firm boundaries. Ask SIL to talk to your husband about why she set boundaries.

If after talking with you and his sister he still doesn't get it, you may have to draw boundaries with husband.

If he's going to fall for his mother's guilt trips rather than respect your wishes and privacy, then have a contingency plan for birth and post-partum.

For example, if he's going to pressure you to bring his mother in to the delivery room, then maybe he doesn't need to be there either.

If he's going to allow his mother to stay for weeks after you and baby are home,

maybe you and baby need to stay somewhere else where you can control who is around you and baby.

tachoue2004 − It's not her you need to worry about. It's him.

You need to sit down and have a conversation with him to make sure he understands what you need from him.

latte1963 − Well, there’s still time for emergency marriage counselling to talk about just this issue.

You can also sit your husband down & make it clear that you’re the mom & mom & baby are a package deal for at least the next 2-3 years.

There will be no decisions made about the baby without you, the mom, 100% agreeing with it.

If he ever thinks that his mom’s feelings are more important than yours, then he can pack a bag,

drive 5 hours, & go live with her for a month or 3, while he’s getting therapy.

There will be no sleepovers at her house for years! Years! ! And, no, she’s not needed at your house either after the baby is born.

This one is important to get straightened out now.

If you have a big house & there’s plenty of room for her to stay, then put a 2-night maximum on her visits.

Anything more than that, she needs to stay elsewhere. And she needs to actually HELP, not just visit & hold the baby.

If she just wants to hold babies, she can volunteer at her local hospital or help at a daycare.

Remember that this is your home, your baby, your b**bs that are feeding that baby so what you say goes.

What makes you comfortable goes. If she starts b*tching, she goes!

These users recommended following the sister-in-law’s example and asking for her support

bellebalwin − You and your husband need to do exactly what sister in law did.

Significant-Bet4545 − Get SIL on your side. Get her playbook. Follow it

Decent_Front4647 − Please handle this now with your husband and enlist your SIL if needed.

Make sure that you tell the hospital staff that she isn’t welcome in the delivery room and whatever else you need set in stone ahead of time.

Fuzzy-Mushroom-1933 − If your husband doesn’t agree with keeping her out of the delivery room,

then you need to talk to your medical team and especially the labor and delivery nurses

and tell them flat out that no one beside your husband is allowed in the labor and delivery unit or the recovery room

Those nurses have seen it all and they will completely protect you

You also need to have a come to Jesus with your husband and tell him that your mother-in-law is not coming to help or visit for several weeks

Should the pregnant woman contact her MIL directly, or insist that her husband deliver every boundary? Would involving the SIL strengthen their position—or create another family explosion? Share the verdict below.
