She Thought Her Gym Crush Was Perfect Until Their First Date Changed Everything

in Social Issues

Sometimes one date is enough to realize someone is not the person you imagined them to be.

A woman agreed to go on a first date with her gym crush despite some hesitation after discovering he was a father.

She wanted to give him a fair chance, but the evening quickly revealed a series of uncomfortable moments.

He arrived late, dominated conversations, had concerning views about his relationship with his son, and repeatedly turned ordinary topics into opportunities to brag about himself.

The more they talked, the more she noticed a pattern: a lack of empathy, a need to prove superiority, and comments that made her question his character.

By the end of the date, she already knew she didn’t want a second one but because they shared the same gym, she wasn’t sure how to reject him without creating awkwardness.

After finally sending a respectful message explaining that she didn’t feel they were compatible, his response only confirmed she had made the right choice.

'I was excited to date my gym crush until he opened his mouth?'

My (now ex) gym crush, Fred (28M), asked me out about a week ago. We

followed each other on Instagram and I discovered that he had a son. I (28F)

was anxious about dating a dad, but he seemed nice in our texts so I decided

to go on the first date and know more about it and him in person.. I didn’t

like him, at all. I’ll tell you why with just a few examples:

• He arrived 15 minutes late to our date and, laughing, admitted that ten

minutes before our scheduled meeting time, he was still in bed. He blamed

his roommate for it.. • He would ignore what I said and pivot the

conversation back to what he was saying / himself.

• He hasn’t seen his 11-year-old son in five months. The boy lives in another

city with his mother and Fred doesn’t speak to her at all. He admitted he

only talks to his son “every now and then.” Later, I asked if he’d like more

children someday (I want children myself). He said that he doesn’t really like

anything related to children…

• He claimed his previous gyms always had “bad vibes” because some would

stare at him while he trained. Instead of traditional exercises, he does more

explosive ones. I said: “people sometimes stare because they admire you”,

and he went, “nah!”

• I asked about whether he got along with the people in his functional

training class. He said yes, added that it’s mostly women, and then went on a

rant about how other guys avoid the class because training with women

makes them feel “less masculine” (nobody told him this; it’s his theory). He

finished with, “I am better than them anyway, I don’t care.” What?

• I mentioned that I had been bullied when I was 12. He said, “But why? There

had to be something about you that they didn't like." I asked what it even

mattered anyway since kids bully others for random reasons.

• He bragged that he never needed to study English (the language) because

he learned it all through music, and that gave him the best grades in his

class. He then said he couldn’t understand why his university classmates

struggled to read English texts because "it's basically the same stuff we

study \[kinesiology\], just in English. It’s so obvious." As a language teacher

myself, I pointed out that what is obvious for him might not be obvious for

everyone. He ignored that and kept saying “but it’s obvious stuff!” and I

went, “for YOU.” He seemed confused by my response.

There’s a lot more, but I’ll leave it there for the sake of brevity. By the end of

the date, I was actively trying to hide my yawns. I haven’t seen him since the

date because he went back to his hometown for vacation... I think he’s

coming back this week. I have no idea how to tell him I don’t want to see him

again. Could you help me with that?. ———. \[UPDATE\]

Thank you all for your advice! I wasn’t sure how to word the message since

we’d still have to see each other at the gym, and your suggestions helped a

lot ✨ I texted him I’d have to decline the movie date he had suggested

because I didn’t think we were compatible, but that there wouldn’t be any

awkwardness between us at the gym. He replied, “Oooh, yeah. Don’t worry,

it’s all good :)”

However, three minutes later he sent another text: “Yeah, maybe. I wasn’t

really thinking whether anything would come of it. If it ended up becoming

something more, that’d have been great too, because I enjoyed getting to

know you very much.”

I felt like he was trying to make it clear that he wasn’t that invested anyway,

even though he was the one who asked me out and then suggested a

second date 😂 Anyway, it’s done!

Sometimes a difficult dating decision is not about finding one dramatic reason to walk away.

It is about recognizing a pattern of behaviors that makes someone feel emotionally unsafe, unheard, or simply incompatible.

The OP’s experience with Fred was not based on one awkward comment or a single bad moment.

It was the accumulation of small interactions that revealed how he communicated, viewed relationships, and responded to other people’s experiences.

At the beginning, the OP was already willing to look beyond her hesitation about dating a father.

She gave him a chance because his messages seemed kind and because she wanted to understand him as a person rather than judge him immediately.

However, the date revealed several concerns that were unrelated to him having a child.

The issue was not his past or his circumstances; it was his present behavior.

One important detail is how Fred responded during conversations.

The OP repeatedly described moments where she shared something personal and he redirected the conversation back toward himself or dismissed her perspective.

Healthy communication is not only about talking; it is about showing curiosity, empathy, and the ability to consider another person’s reality.

A different perspective is that Fred may not have intentionally tried to appear arrogant or insensitive.

Some people are unaware of how their words come across, especially when they are confident in their own abilities.

His comments about training, language learning, and other men’s masculinity could have been attempts to express pride rather than superiority.

However, intent does not erase impact. A person can unintentionally reveal attitudes that make someone else uncomfortable.

His relationship with his son also stood out because it touched on a deeper value difference.

Being a parent does not automatically make someone a good or bad partner, but how someone talks about their responsibilities often reveals their priorities.

The OP wanted children in the future, while Fred expressed little interest in children and had limited contact with his own son. That difference alone could create major incompatibility.

This insight helps explain why the OP felt uncomfortable despite Fred not doing anything obviously extreme.

Dating is often less about identifying a single “bad” action and more about noticing repeated emotional signals.

When someone frequently minimizes others’ experiences, centers themselves, or reacts without empathy, it can create an exhausting dynamic over time.

The OP’s decision to politely decline a second date was reasonable.

She did not need to prove that Fred was a terrible person.

She only needed to recognize that their values, communication styles, and expectations did not align.

A healthy connection should not require someone to ignore their instincts after the first meeting.

Attraction matters, but so do kindness, accountability, and the feeling that both people are genuinely interested in understanding each other.

Sometimes the right choice is not finding a way to make something work, but appreciating that one date provided enough information to move forward separately.

These are the responses from Reddit users:

These commenters agreed OP discovered the red flags early and should move on

alexandria33197 − A crush really is just a lack of information, OP\~

Haunting-Account-873 − You just dodged a bullet love, you save yourself

some from therapy, his loss not yours!

emiliabow − Ha, at least you found out early, onward to someone better!

SimpleCooki3 − This is not a man you want to be with. Trust yourself.

These Redditors suggested giving a polite rejection while keeping things comfortable at the gym

AugustoLegendario − This guy is dumb as bricks, and that’s the best thing I

could say about him. Emotional maturity in the trash can. Anyway, “X you

know, we had a nice evening on our date but I’m sorry to say I’m not really

interested in continuing to develop a romantic relationship.

It was nice talking to you and cool getting to know a gym buddy and I’m

wishing you the best in your dating life. ” That would be a charitable thing to send him.

elgrn1 − "Thanks for the date. I realised we aren't compatible but I'm glad to

know neither of us will make it awkward at the gym. "

gb997 − i don’t think you owe him anything at this point. just be friendly as if

the date never happened. just be polite when you see him at the gym. and if

he tries to ask you out just say you’re busy.

These users criticized his behavior and highlighted concerns about his maturity, empathy, and personality

peachteamami − him saying he doesn't want anything to do with children. ..

while having an 11-year-old son. some men are incredibly fucked up and I

hope your able to switch gym times because if I were you just seeing his face would p__s me off.

PhilosophyEntire3704 − This man is incredibly narcissistic (overt

n__cissism,selfish, he focuses on himself, doesn’t care how his lateness

affects others, fails to take responsibility for his lateness or his son, lacks

empathy for your bullying, exaggerates his academic achievements, is so

selfish that he is a deadbeat dad, appears to be insecure about his

masculinity, likes attention of other women, doesn’t seem parenting or family oriented).

Men with narcissistic traits either experienced emotional abuse or emotional

n__lect in early childhood. They tend to adopt a selfish, looking out for

oneself attitude because no one loved or cared for them consistently, have

attachment wounds, are very sensitive to r__ection or abandonment and are easily slighted.

They lack empathy and self reflection, are often emotionally unavailable and

avoidant and you will feel very lonely dating them. As they lack emotional

skills, self reflection and depth, they don’t seek therapy and usually do not

change, it is a lifelong condition. Dont try to fix or save this disordered man

it is not your job - walk away early.

My mean critical insecure easily angered father was an insecure braggart like

this man and my cheating, emotionally unavailable ex husband (who was

quite insecure) were both narcissistic and when they feel small, they will

emotionally abuse you. This man displays NPD traits like a flashing sign over

his head. Inside this man, is an insecure and unloved inner child - who needs therapy.

Always trust your gut. My friend said “give him a chance”. I did and it was the

biggest mistake of my life. He was controlling, emot unavailable, big and

growing ego and increasingly emotionally and psychologically abusive over

time. You are a perceptive woman, have seen the red flags and remind me of

myself when I first met my husband.

Please trust your gut, stop dating this guy. I wish I had trusted my gut and

never married this type of man. I would have had time in my prime like yours

to find someone nicer, healthier and who treated me better. You can and will please walk….

. Men with NPD end up being emotional abusers (because hurt people hurt

people) and you will need LT trauma therapy if you date this man. From my

experience and experience of divorced female friends who divorced men

like this, run and find someone who is emotionally healthy and securely attached.

Perfect_Age777 − Hi, I am dumbfounded by such egocentrism on his part. I

think you're right not to want to see him again. How is it possible to tick so

many "red flag" boxes? How do you tell him? In the simplest way possible: I

didn't get butterflies in my stomach. Thanks, goodbye. ..

These commenters described him as attention-seeking and difficult to deal with

morenaaaaaaaahhhh − He will suck all your energy. Just do the regular "i

don't think we'll work" kinda talk. While I'm pretty sure he seems like the

kinda guy who will sh*t talk about you after rejcting him because, well, "main

character", you just gotta ready yourself

kai333 − Smallest dogs bark the most 😂. He sounds insufferable but it's on

you. Very main character energy which. .. Is a certain type. Up to you if it's

worth it but I would say it's a fundamental mismatch

Liquid_Friction − Are you not turned off by learning this? Explosive workouts

wtf what a try hard, but you liked his explosive workouts. .. Like why. .. What

did you think he would be like?

What began as a simple gym crush quickly turned into a first-date reality check for OP.

After hearing Fred’s comments about relationships, parenting, confidence, and the way he viewed others, she realized their values and personalities did not align.

Instead of forcing a connection, OP chose honesty and politely ended things before it went further.

Do you think OP was right to trust her instincts after one date, or should she have given him another chance?
