Woman Rejected Over Native Language, Then Outs The Interviewer Who Faked Fluency

Job interviews are already stressful enough, but things get even more confusing when the person judging you doesn’t seem fully qualified themselves. Most people walk away from a bad interview and try to forget about it, assuming it just wasn’t the right fit.

But for this woman, something about the experience didn’t sit right. After being rejected for a surprising reason, she decided to speak up publicly. What happened next didn’t just get attention; it led to serious consequences for someone else. Scroll down to see how one review changed everything.

She walked into the interview ready to prove her fluency but left questioning everything

'AITA for getting someone fired because they pretended to know the language?'

I (27f) decided to apply for my dream job.

I have met all the criteria, and one of them was to be proficient in my native language (Russian), which I am,

since I've grown up in the country speaking and writing in it and have finished school and university,

where obviously all the subjects are taught in Russian, except English and French/German language classes.

I ended up securing the interview with this place and needed to demonstrate knowledge of Russian,

so the person who did the interview started asking me questions in it.

However, I could barely understand her; not only did the accent make it incredibly difficult,

but also she couldn't build a sentence and used incorrect forms of the words, and the pronunciation was totally wrong too.

In short, it sounded as if she were randomly putting the words in Google Translate and was trying to repeat them over.

I have answered all her questions; however, I've also noticed she barely made any notes.

I decided to let it pass and wait for a verdict. After about 3 months of chasing and silence,

I got an email saying I wasn't successful, and the reason was that they believed my knowledge of the Russian

language was poor and insufficient for the job and not up to their "standards" according to the interviewer.

Of course I was confused, since the lady who interviewed me could barely speak the language herself.

So I have decided to leave feedback about my experience on one of the job sites,

which was made to share info about working at the job and the interview process.

My review received a fair amount of traction, and last week Monday I ended up getting a call from the higher-ups,

who listened to my feedback and opened the investigation.

On Friday I found out the lady who interviewed me was dismissed.

She and her friends were messaging me on social media calling me an a__hole,

because this job was her only source of income and she was struggling.

I am now feeling guilty about this and feel like I was an a__hole for writing about my experience. AITA?.

In today’s competitive work environment, dishonesty in the workplace is more common than many people realize. Employees may lie about their skills, qualifications, or performance, often believing that small exaggerations can help them secure opportunities or maintain their position.

However, even minor dishonesty can have ripple effects that extend far beyond the individual. According to Psychology Today, workplace lies can gradually damage trust and disrupt the overall functioning of an organization.

One of the most serious forms of dishonesty occurs when individuals misrepresent their abilities, particularly during hiring or evaluation processes. When someone claims expertise they do not truly possess, it creates an unfair system where more qualified candidates may be overlooked.

Over time, this not only harms individuals but also weakens the integrity of the hiring process itself. The impact of such behavior can spread quickly. When dishonesty is tolerated or, worse, goes unnoticed, it can “taint and corrupt” workplace culture, leading to an environment where employees feel uncertain about each other’s credibility.

Trust, once broken, is difficult to rebuild. Teams may become less collaborative, communication may suffer, and productivity can decline as a result. The reasons behind workplace dishonesty are often complex.

Some individuals may act out of fear of failure, job insecurity, or pressure to compete in demanding environments. Others may be influenced by personality traits such as a desire for control or recognition.

In high-stakes situations, the temptation to exaggerate or conceal the truth can feel justified, even if it ultimately leads to negative consequences.

Interestingly, not all workplace lies are driven by selfish motives. Some employees engage in “prosocial lying,” telling small untruths to avoid conflict or protect others’ feelings.

While these lies may seem harmless, they can still contribute to a broader culture where honesty is gradually eroded. When transparency is no longer the norm, misunderstandings and mistrust can become more frequent.

Ultimately, trust is the foundation of any healthy workplace. When employees perceive dishonesty around them, they may become more cautious, less engaged, and less willing to collaborate.

Organizations that prioritize honesty, accountability, and transparency are more likely to foster strong relationships and long-term success. Without these values, even small acts of deception can escalate into larger issues that affect both morale and performance.

See what others had to share with OP:

These Redditors argued she was unqualified and deserved consequences for lying

EagleSevenFoxThree − NTA. She is scamming her company by pretending to speak a language that she has minimal fluency in.

Imagine how many other people she’s turned down for jobs.

Angelblade92 − NTA- you missed out on a wonderful-sounding job due to a person

who clearly wasn’t up to scratch and had no business interviewing someone fluent in the language.

ELSquared71 − NTA. She isn’t qualified to do her job and lied about the results of the interview.

The business that employs her requires knowledge of the language, and she’s pulling the wool over their eyes.

Not your concern, and I hope you’re able to interview again.

Ehgender − NTA She took a job she shouldn’t have, and the consequence of that is that the team suffers.

She would have been found out eventually. Not only that but she specifically is the reason you didn’t get the job

because she was afraid she would have been found out had you been hired.

She was trying to keep a job she didn’t deserve, leaving other more qualified people to suffer the consequences.

I hope they reconsider your application. And don’t feel bad about her. I’m sure she’ll find another scam soon enough.

DarkAthena − NTA. She was being dishonest and threw you under the bus to save herself.

She got what she deserved. I’m sorry you lost out on the job.

hellahellagoodshit − NTA. It sounds to me like she denied you a job opportunity because she was afraid

that you would know that she cannot speak Russian. And for that, she is a bad person and deserves to be fired.

rmric0 − NTA. This is really one of those situations where what's good for the goose is good for the gander;

this lady denied you a job because she was incompetent at hers. She can clearly go lie and get another job somewhere else.

Thediciplematt − NTA As a man who uses Google Translate to communicate and build a 2nd language, yikes.

Good warning signs. She wasn’t fluent in the language. She lied. It would be figured out eventually.

What was her plan? Take a job where she needs to speak Russian and hope she never runs into a native speaker.

mandirahman − NTA. If she's getting paid for a skill she claims to have, then she needs to possess that skill.

You lost out on a job because she lied.

[Reddit User] − NTA. You are allowed to leave honest feedback.

This woman shouldn't have been given that position if she wasn't qualified, and that's not your fault.

I get that she was p__sed, but again, it's not your fault that she isn't qualified for the job she was doing.

The blame falls on those who are in senior positions to this lady.

Hope you find a job you love, and don't have any more experiences like this. Block and report this woman and her friends, please OP.

These users supported OP, saying she lost the job unfairly due to others’ incompetence

[Reddit User] − Nta. You were denied a job based on a lie that wasn’t yours.

That’s not on you. It could have been your only source of income too.

[Reddit User] − NTA. You didn't get her fired. She got herself fired.

Dark_Phoenix25 − NTA. Her poor language skills made you miss out on your dream job.

That’s not on you; you were simply being honest. OP, you might want to email that same higher-up to see

if you can re-interview, seeing as this wasn’t your fault. Good luck

These folks stressed she caused her own firing and OP is not to blame

[Reddit User] − NTA, she shouldn’t have pretended to know a language she wasn’t fluent in, and it’s her own fault for being sacked.

She could’ve easily had avoided this by not pretending and having someone else do the interview that did know Russian

RedditUser123234 − NTA She and her friends were messaging me on social media, calling me an a__hole,

because this job was her only source of income and she was struggling.

And there were probably struggling people who could've used that job whom she denied.

If her job was really so important to her and she absolutely had to lie to keep her source of income,

then in her spare time after getting this new job responsibility, she should've been getting language lessons

(Rosetta Stone or something else online), instead of relying on whatever translation thing she was using.

What started as a routine job application quickly turned into a messy lesson about honesty, accountability, and unintended consequences. While many sympathized with the candidate for losing her dream opportunity unfairly, others couldn’t ignore the fallout of someone losing their job after one review.

So where’s the line? Was the candidate simply standing up for herself, or did the situation spiral further than expected? And if you were in her shoes, would you have stayed silent or spoken up anyway? Share your thoughts below; this one’s bound to spark debate.
