Most parents want to help their children when life takes an unexpected turn. However, that support can become far more complicated when money is tight, promises are broken, and everyone has a different idea of what family responsibility should look like.

That is the situation facing the original poster after his pregnant stepdaughter and her boyfriend moved into the family home. What was meant to be a short stay has stretched on, leaving him juggling multiple jobs while struggling to pay the household bills.

His proposal for the young couple to help cover expenses has sparked a major disagreement with his wife, who refuses to consider asking them to leave. Scroll down to decide who is being unreasonable.

A struggling stepfather asked two employed young adults to help cover household bills

'AITAH for expecting a 19-year-old and 21-year-old to contribute financially?'

5 years ago, my (M53) stepdaughter (now 19) started dating a boy who was 16. My wife (F43) allowed him, on occasion, to spend the night.

When he wasn't allowed, he'd sneak in, hide in the closet, hide under the bed, or break into vacant apartments near us (he was arrested for trespassing).

(His home is 100 miles away)

If I'd give in and say he could stay one night and it would turn into 7. My wife has zero ability to tell her daughter what to do.

After she graduated high school, she moved to another state, leaving him behind.

She told my wife she realized she would never get away from him if she stayed home and he would hold her back.

My greatest fear was that he would get her pregnant, he wouldn't be able to take care of her

(he didn't graduate high school), and raising the baby would fall on me and my wife.

She came back home to get the rest of her stuff, and agreed to meet the guy to give each other their stuff back.

She told my wife, she "kept it strictly professional." She returned to her new home, and after a month or two returned home.

In March, she told us she was pregnant and due in August. We told her they couldn't live with us and he needed to get a job.

He said he couldn't get a job in this city without a place to stay. So I gave them 30 days to save up and move out.

The deal was for 30 days and I wasn't going to do the dishes or take out the trash.

That was 4 months ago. My stepdaughter said they can't save money because she's paying for her baby shower.

The dishes and trash sit for days at a time. They both have jobs, and combined make at least $1000 a week.

My wife who told me they wouldn't be allowed to live here with the baby has now switched to, "I'm not kicking out my daughter and grandbaby."

I am struggling to pay the bills. I work a full time job, have a small side hustle that pays $300 a month, and I do Instacart on one of...

This week, I used two PTO days to do Instacart for rent. I sold my plasma. I still had to ask my parents for help.

I suggested that he applies to get on the lease, and then each of us contribute $150 a week to a fund for paying rent and bills.

My wife immediately rejected that and threatened to take them and move out. She doesn't make enough to cover her expenses without me. AITAH?

Financial stress has a way of exposing problems that were quietly building long before the bills became overwhelming. What begins as an act of support for adult children can gradually turn into a conflict over responsibility, expectations, and fairness. The hardest part is that everyone may genuinely care about one another while still having completely different ideas about what helping should look like.

In this situation, the conflict extends far beyond asking two young adults to contribute financially. The stepdaughter and her boyfriend are both employed, expecting a baby, and living in a household where the original agreement, a temporary 30-day stay while they saved money, has stretched into several months.

Meanwhile, the OP describes working multiple jobs, using paid time off to earn extra income, selling plasma, and even borrowing money from his parents to keep up with household expenses. Adding to the strain, household chores remain undone despite an earlier agreement.

The greatest source of tension, however, appears to be the disagreement between spouses. The wife initially supported a deadline but later changed her position, leaving the OP feeling solely responsible for carrying both the financial burden and enforcing boundaries.

A different psychological perspective is that this conflict reflects two competing forms of caregiving. The wife’s instincts seem directed toward protecting her daughter and future grandchild from immediate hardship. The OP’s instincts focus on preparing the young couple for adulthood by expecting them to contribute while they are both earning income.

Neither motivation is inherently uncaring. In fact, both arise from concern. The challenge is that protection without increasing responsibility can unintentionally delay independence, while responsibility without emotional support can feel like rejection. Families often struggle because they treat these approaches as opposites when, in reality, healthy support usually requires both.

Family therapist Dr. John Townsend, co-author of Boundaries, argues that genuine support should empower people to take responsibility rather than unintentionally encourage long-term dependence. Healthy boundaries allow compassion and accountability to exist together instead of forcing families to choose one over the other.

Verywell Mind likewise explains that clear expectations regarding finances, household responsibilities, and timelines reduce conflict because everyone understands both the help being offered and the responsibilities attached to it. Without those expectations, resentment often grows on every side.

Viewed through that lens, the OP’s request for financial contributions appears less like a demand for rent and more like an attempt to stabilize a household that is already under significant strain. At the same time, the wife is likely responding to the emotional reality of seeing her pregnant daughter facing uncertainty.

Those emotions are understandable, but changing previously agreed-upon expectations without creating an alternative plan leaves everyone in a more difficult position.

The couple’s employment also changes the discussion because the request is not being made of two people with no income, but of two adults who are already earning money while preparing to become parents.

Supporting adult children does not require carrying every responsibility on their behalf. The strongest family relationships often combine compassion with clear expectations, allowing young adults to receive help while gradually assuming the financial and practical responsibilities that come with building a family of their own.

Here’s the feedback from the Reddit community:

This group warned that the wife’s refusal to set boundaries will financially and emotionally drain OP, suggesting decisive action or legal intervention

DubbulG − Run for your life. This will never get better at this point, that is a grown ass woman who has never learned to support herself.

Dipping_My_Toes − Let her go. She is determined to enable these kids who don't want to take responsibility for themselves.

They will suck you dry financially and leave a husk.

Maybe when she figures out she can't support that entire household on her own, she'll get her thinking straight but I wouldn't bet on it.

mo-nie − YTA for coming here instead of a divorce lawyer. You’re 53.

Don’t live the last of your days like this, with people using and disrespecting you, especially the person who is supposed to love and support you.

parkchanwookiee − You can't afford to support all these people. And the lack of emotional support is frankly shocking. Cut your losses, and run.

BookishIntrovert99 − She’s not going to move out. She knows she can’t support them without you. Call her bluff. Let her go.

See how fast she’ll backpedal. Your wife is the biggest problem.

She’s letting them mooch off you and she doesn’t care that you’re struggling. Talk to a lawyer.

These users highlighted the misaligned priorities, noting minor issues like the shower are insignificant compared to the larger responsibility and enabling problem

Bright_Ad_3690 − Saving for the shower? Priorities are way off here.

Kind_Ad_3336 − Major yikes. I’m 35 and know better than to live like this.

This commenter advised formal measures, including written agreements and notice to ensure the adults act responsibly

calacmack − Never ever allow someone to move into your home without a signed agreement.

Give them both a written notice to leave within a specific period of time and hold them to it.

The shower is insignificant; they are going to be parents and need to act like adults. NTA.

This group stressed consulting a lawyer, understanding lease obligations, and making long-term decisions to protect OP’s life and resources

BronwynLane − This is… a shitshow. I’m so sorry. You’re renting? Who is named in the lease?

CaptainSnappertain − NTA. Consult a lawyer about how much a divorce would cost you and make your decision.

This is your life. They will never leave. You will raise that baby and support them. Or you will leave your wife.

For many readers, however, the real conflict wasn’t between a stepfather and his stepdaughter. It was between two spouses who no longer seem to share the same expectations about family, finances, and where helping ends and enabling begins.
