Woman Rents Private Riverside Cabin, Then Stranger Demands to Use Her Gazebo for a Photoshoot

Vacation rentals are supposed to be places where people can relax and enjoy their own space.

But sometimes, guests forget that a shared location does not mean every part of the property is available to everyone.

The original poster (OP) has rented the same riverside cabin in Ontario for years, enjoying exclusive access to the deck, hot tub, and private gazebo included with the rental.

During one stay, another guest unexpectedly walked onto OP’s private deck and casually announced plans to use the gazebo for a photoshoot.

What started as a simple request quickly turned into a conflict when the guest acted as if OP’s rented space belonged to everyone.

Read on to find out how OP handled the unexpected visitor.

Vacation renter confronts a stranger who assumes she can use her private gazebo for a photoshoot without permission

'Entitled couple plan a photoshoot at my gazebo?'

I (50F) (ME) rent a place along a river in Ontario, Canada every year in

August for 10-14 days. My rental includes exclusive use of a cabin, private

deck with hot tub and a furnished gazebo. Mine is the only rental with

gazebo. Just east of "my place" is another, smaller cabin with just a dock

and a hot tub. I get back from a quick grocery shopping expedition. As I am

unpacking my car, a young woman (EW) walks over and climbs on my deck.

She has obviously either just showered or just gotten out of the hot tub-

she's in a bathrobe.

EW: Hi! I just wanted to stop by and tell you that me and my partner will be

doing a photoshoot in the gazebo tomorrow morning. Just letting you

know, as a courtesy, since we will be moving your boats out for the

photoshoot. Don't worry, we will put them back.

Now, the gazebo is attached to the deck which surrounds my rental cabin.

My kayaks are in the gazebo when rain is forecast (it's been raining off and

on all day). Now, I have exclusive use of the entire area. No-one from the

other rentals are supposed to come near my area. This info is part of the

owners' orientation for all new arrivals.

I'm standing at my cabin door, with grocery bags in my hands,

dumbfounded that she thinks she can take over the gazebo that is part of

my rental.

EW: So, are you staying here alone or do you have your husband and kids

with you? Do you own the cabin? How much did it cost? How long have you

been here?. Bullet quick questions, no pauses for answers.. ME: You are in

my private space, please leave.. EW: I'm just being friendly...

ME: No, you are intruding on my space and invading my privacy. Your

questions are intrusive and creepy. You will not be doing a photoshoot

tomorrow or anytime in my gazebo. Please leave now.

EW: No need to get snippy (she says in snippy tone). We are doing the

shoot tomorrow so you better not interfere. Given your attitude, I think it's

best that you head into town by 8. Don't come back before 2.. ME: Not

happening. Get off my deck. Get out of my space now.. EW: (stamps foot)

You are being unreasonable. You're the only one with a gazebo, you need

to share!. ME: No I don't. Leave NOW.

I went into the cabin, locked the door and immediately message the owner.

I've been renting here for years, the owner and I have become friends.

They didn't show up for their photoshoot. And the owner had to chase

them out of the rental the next morning, they were still in bed an hour past

checkout time.

A peaceful getaway often depends on one simple expectation: that the place you are staying truly feels like your own for the time you are there.

When someone rents a private space, they are not just paying for a physical structure; they are paying for privacy, comfort, and the ability to enjoy that environment without strangers deciding how it should be used.

In this situation, OP’s frustration was not about refusing to share a gazebo.

It was about someone entering a clearly private area and acting as though access had already been granted.

The emotional tension in this story comes from a clash between entitlement and boundaries.

OP had spent years returning to the same rental and understood the arrangement: the cabin, deck, hot tub, and gazebo were part of her exclusive rental space.

Meanwhile, EW seemed to view the gazebo as a desirable backdrop rather than someone else’s private area.

The most concerning part was not simply asking about a photoshoot; it was the assumption that OP’s permission was unnecessary.

Moving personal belongings, using the area, and even telling OP when she should leave transformed a request into a demand.

A different perspective is that some people underestimate private boundaries when a space appears attractive or unused.

A beautiful location can create a false sense that it is a shared resource, especially in vacation settings where people are focused on creating memories or content.

However, the absence of someone physically occupying a space does not mean it is available.

OP’s reaction may seem firm, but it came after someone had already crossed multiple lines: entering her deck, questioning her personal life, and informing her of a plan that directly affected her rental.

This idea helps explain why OP’s response was reasonable.

She did not reject a polite request made from a respectful distance.

Instead, she responded to someone who had already decided the outcome and expected compliance.

The phrase “you need to share” reveals the misunderstanding: sharing is something offered voluntarily, not something demanded from someone who paid for exclusive use.

The situation also highlights an important lesson about hospitality. Being friendly does not mean surrendering personal space, and being generous does not mean allowing others to ignore agreements.

Vacation properties, homes, and rentals all rely on mutual respect.

Without that respect, even beautiful places can become sources of stress.

Ultimately, OP protected the very thing she paid for: a private retreat where she could relax.

A simple request for permission might have created a completely different outcome, but entitlement turned a possible conversation into a conflict.

Respecting boundaries is not unfriendly; it is what allows people to share spaces peacefully.

Here’s what people had to say to OP:

Most commenters supported OP’s decision to contact the property owner

lapsteelguitar − Calling the owner was the right thing to do. Glad they

backed you up.

SadSack4573 − Wow! The nerve of some people! Glad the owner

straightened that out

QuietCelery7850 − Wow. We’re having a photo shoot in \your\ gazebo,

we’re going to move \your\ boats, and maybe you should just leave the

house for the day. I have a theoretical question. What if the neighbors and

approached you and asked your permission?

You would still be 100 percent in your rights to deny the request, and I

would not blame you one bit, but would there be any circumstances in

which you would permit it?

These comments focused on the level of entitlement involved

pinkflower200 − The audacity of people amazes me. All the time!

More-Jacket-9034 − Just your luck to have the displeasure of meeting the

queen of entitlement.

AdultingThroughLife − Woah entitled much!!!

These commenters reacted more humorously

blurblurblahblah − I feel like a hose would solve that problem quick, aim for their faces

HurryUpTeg − When EW relays this back to anyone listening, you will be

“Karen, boomer, entitled”. Take satisfaction in the long-suffering eye roll

from the listener

This commenter focused on responsibility and liability

hcoklc − Retired insurance agent here, you are most likely responsible for

any damage so that would be an absolute no for me. She doesn’t sound like

someone that would step up if they caused a problem. You are NTA.

This comment highlighted the difference between a polite request and an entitled demand

50CentButInNickels − EW: Hi! I just wanted to stop by and tell you that me

and my partner will be doing a photoshoot in the gazebo tomorrow

morning. Just letting you know, as a courtesy, since we will be moving your

boats out for the photoshoot. Don't worry, we will put them back.

Hahahahaha f__k you, you will.

EW: No need to get snippy (she says in snippy tone). We are doing the

shoot tomorrow so you better not interfere. Given your attitude, I think it's

best that you head into town by 8. Don't come back before 2. And just

about here is where EW would be eating dirt. They didn't show up for their photoshoot.

And the owner had to chase them out of the rental the next morning, they

were still in bed an hour past checkout time. Fantastic.

The OP returned to her private rental expecting a peaceful vacation, only to find a stranger walking onto her deck and announcing plans to use her personal gazebo for a photoshoot.

What began as a “friendly” request quickly turned into a demand that ignored clear boundaries and rental rules.

While the visitor insisted she was only asking to share the space, the OP stood firm and protected the area she had paid to use exclusively.

Do you think the OP handled the situation fairly, or should she have been more accommodating? Share your thoughts below!
