Couple Uninvites Their Wedding Musician, Then Gets Sued for Expecting Him to Perform Free

Friendship can make people incredibly generous, especially when they have a skill that could make someone’s wedding more meaningful.

But doing a favor feels very different when you suddenly realize the couple sees you as a service provider rather than a friend.

The original poster (OP) is both a lawyer and an experienced musician who has performed at several friends’ weddings.

When Jimmy and Belle asked him to provide all the music for their Catholic wedding mass, OP agreed as a favor and assumed he would also attend as a guest.

Instead, he later discovered that he had been removed from the guest list while still being expected to perform the entire ceremony for free.

What OP did afterward turned a wedding favor into a legal dispute. Read on to see whether Reddit thinks he took things too far.

Musician sues his friends after they use his wedding performance skills without inviting him

not the actual photo

'AITA for suing my friends after singing and playing for their entire wedding and not getting paid?'

I (30M) am a lawyer, but I’m also very active in music. I sing, and I play piano, organ, guitar.

Pretty much any instrument I can get my hands on. I’ve performed at several weddings, often

as a personal favor for close friends.

A while back, my friends Jimmy and Belle asked if I could handle the entire music for their

Catholic wedding mass. That meant singing and playing organ through the whole liturgy

processional, offertory, communion, recessional, etc. I agreed, assuming I was being invited as

a guest and doing this out of friendship.

But as the wedding approached, I noticed I hadn’t received any kind of invitation not even to

the mass. I asked Belle and she replied:

“Oh! We had to trim the guest list. But you can still come early to rehearse and do the

music.”. Translation: I wasn’t invited. I wasn’t even treated like a guest. Just free labor.

Still, I honored the commitment. I arrived early, rehearsed, sang and played the entire mass

alone, packed up, and left. No acknowledgment, no token, no food, no seat, no thank-you.

So I sent them a professional invoice a reasonable rate for performing solo for a full wedding

mass. Nothing excessive. Just what it was worth.. They didn’t pay it.. Belle ghosted me. Jimmy

said he’d “talk to her,” but nothing happened.

They ignored follow-ups. After 30 days, I sent a demand letter. No response. So I sued them

for breach of oral contract and unjust enrichment.

We had written messages confirming the arrangement. Screenshots of Belle asking me to

perform, timing, songs, and expectations. I represented myself. They showed up shocked that

I followed through.

Guess what? I won. The judge ruled in my favor and ordered them to pay the full amount,

plus court costs.

Now our friend group is on fire. Some say I went too far. Others quietly say “good for you.”

Belle’s been posting cryptic quotes about “betrayal” and “money over friendship.”

So now I’m wondering AITA for suing people I once considered friends after they used me for

free live music and refused to pay? 🤔

Sometimes friendship turns sour not because money suddenly matters more than people, but because one person discovers that their generosity was never being treated as generosity at all.

What feels like a favor when there is mutual respect can feel like exploitation the moment that respect disappears.

OP agreed to provide music for an entire Catholic wedding mass because he believed he was helping friends.

That is significant labor: rehearsing, singing, playing organ, coordinating multiple parts of the liturgy, arriving early, performing through the ceremony, and packing everything afterward.

The emotional injury came when he realized he had been removed from the guest list but was still expected to provide all of that work for free.

No seat, meal, acknowledgment, or meaningful thank-you followed.

At that point, the arrangement no longer resembled friends helping friends. It looked much more like professional work that the couple simply assumed they would not have to pay for.

There is another perspective worth considering.

OP’s invoice was sent after the performance rather than negotiated beforehand, so some friends may view the lawsuit as an escalation from an originally informal favor.

That discomfort is understandable.

But Jimmy and Belle also had repeated opportunities to respond, dispute the amount, negotiate, apologize, or address the issue after receiving the invoice and demand letter.

Instead, according to OP, they ignored him until court forced the matter.

That idea fits this situation unusually well. Reciprocity does not mean every favor requires an equal financial payment.

Close friends regularly give time, skills, and resources without keeping score.

But the social meaning changes when someone removes the friendship benefits while continuing to demand the friendship favors.

Belle essentially communicated, “There is not enough room for you as a guest, but there is still room for your labor.” That is why OP’s reaction was about dignity as much as money.

The lawsuit may feel extreme because people often expect friendship disputes to remain informal.

Yet informality only works when both sides participate in good faith.

Once the couple refused every attempt to resolve the issue and the court ultimately ruled for OP, the conflict had already moved far beyond a bruised social misunderstanding.

The useful lesson is not that friends should start invoicing one another.

It is that valuable professional skills should be discussed clearly before major events.

If someone is performing as a gift, say so explicitly. If they are working, agree on compensation.

OP may have lost two friends over the invoice, but the friendship was arguably damaged the moment his contribution was valued enough to be required and his presence was valued too little to deserve an invitation.

Let’s dive into the reactions from Reddit:

These commenters said being excluded as a guest turned the performance into paid work

Abject-Ad-2459 − NTA. If you were not allowed to attend as a guest, that means you were

hired to play, this they pay.

FinePossession1085 − NTA. They didn't invite you to the wedding and treated you like "the

help" but more rudely than one should ever treat people who service events.

whattodo_2023 − Money over Friendship? ?? If you were friends, you would have been

invited as a guest.

These commenters felt the couple clearly did not treat OP like a genuine friend

Weekly_Barnacle_485 − If you were ‘trimmed’ from the guest list they don’t consider you to

be much of a friend.

Rejscj24 − You tried. They failed. They obviously did not consider you a friend.

dataslinger − "Friendship? I wasn't even invited to the wedding. "

These commenters warned against informal business arrangements with friends and recommended written contracts

KatzRLife − This is why I always recommend written contracts - even for a gift of this sort.

They protect all parties and is most important between friends & family - if you want them to

stay friends & family. Eta: NTA

FaeriegurlShops − Don’t do business with friends. That is a quick way to lose your friends. The end.

These commenters questioned how payment could be enforced without a clear prior agreement on price

Southern-Interest347 − I don't understand how you won? There was no meeting of the

minds, meaning there was no discussion about payment for your performance. Therefore no

oral contract.   Did you leave that out?

If there was no discussion about payment, then morally it would have been the decent thing

to do to compensate you in some way even if it was a gift card or a gift.

camlaw63 − I’m curious how you overcame the fact that there was never an agreement on price

These commenters backed OP because the judge agreed the couple had treated him unfairly

Famous_Specialist_44 − The judge didn't think you were out of line and whom am I to

disagree with them. NTA

Agitated-Buddy2913 − NTA. They probably trimmed the guest list to save money, and this

just cost them a lot more than your dinner would have. They screwed you, and anyone in

your friend group who can't see that is an AH. Go ahead and show them this post.

None of you are this man's friend if you think this treatment was okay on ANY level, or if you

think he went too far in trying to correct it. They betrayed him. In every way conceivable. They

didn't even thank him. Then they ignored him instead of talking to him about it. What part of

this aren't you understanding?

The judge obviously agreed that your other so-called friends were completely in the wrong

for their behavior. They had originally asked a friend to do it, and then they turned around

and did not treat them at all like a friend, turning into a professional relationship.

My only other note would be that he should have informed them ahead of time that there

would be a fee if he was not a guest at the wedding. And that now there would just be a fee

because once you are not invited, muscling your way in is just weird.

They obviously didn't want him there, but wanted to take advantage of his talents and

services. They used him, and they thought they were going to use him for free. They were

wrong. And they screwed over a lawyer to boot. They're really not very smart, either.

That's okay, if you're one of the friends supporting the couple you are all on the same

intellectual level.

OP’s story highlights a situation where a favor between friends slowly turned into an unpaid professional service.

The main issue was not just the money, but the lack of appreciation and respect.

OP agreed to help because of a friendship, but being excluded from the wedding while still being expected to provide the most important part of the ceremony changed the situation completely.

When the couple refused to acknowledge his work afterward, OP treated it as a business matter rather than a friendship issue.

Do you think OP was justified in taking legal action, or should he have considered the friendship more important than the payment?
