Teacher Buys Gifts For Every Student, But One Parent Still Blames Her Child’s Disappointment

Teachers often find themselves trying to balance fairness, kindness, and the expectations of parents. But sometimes, even doing extra can still leave someone unhappy.

The original poster is a third-grade teacher who organized a classroom gift exchange where students were asked to bring a small gift. One parent chose not to have her child participate, despite being warned that the child might feel excluded.

Wanting every student to feel included, the teacher secretly bought an extra gift for the child anyway. However, when the child refused to risk losing that gift in the exchange game, the parent blamed the teacher for not preparing another solution.

not the actual photo

'AITA for not preparing an extra gift for the kid who did not bring a gift?'

This actually happened last December but I'm only now bringing it up.

I'm a teacher for third graders and last year we had a Christmas celebration where there's a gift exchanging event where the kids exchange gifts through games.

We told the parents to prepare a gift with a budget under 20 dollars.

One kid's mom opted for her kid to not participate in this event, i.e. not bringing a gift and not taking one.

We warned her her kid might feel left out, but she said it's okay.

The celebration came and I actually prepared one gift for each kid with my own money, including the kid who did not bring a gift.

Then came the gift exchanging event where kids start playing games to decide which gift goes to who.

Without a gift to exchange, that kid obviously can't join, and stood to the side and felt left out and cried.

I told her she can join with the gift I gave her, but she liked it too much to risk exchanging it for something less desire.

The kid's mom was furious that her kid actually did not get to join.

I reminded her we warned her this would happen, and she said she didn't know her kid would care enough to cry,

and the teachers should've given the kid an extra gift, however cheap, to join in, upon seeing her cry, and claim the cost of the gift from the mom afterwards,

so that the kid can go home with two gift like the others and wouldn't feel out of place.

That was last year and the kid still comes to our school. But every time her mom picks her up the mom gives me dirty side eyes

and tells other parents about how I deliberately kept her kid from joining in an event for not being able to afford a gift.

AITA? Should I prepare the extra gift in advance?

EDIT: I am just a teacher, not the headmaster. I did not create the celebration nor the situation where kids from low-income families were left out.

The school organized the celebration and I was in no place to object.

I agree that putting kids in this situation is cruel, which is why I bought gifts for everyone so everyone can join. The kid refused.

Edit 2: It has not occurred to me that 20 dollars in US money is a lot.

I am not from the West, and while dollars aren't the official term for our money, some of us tend to to use it in the English language when talking...

because it "feels" like proper English, so I did not realize it until more and more people pointed it out.

20 in my country was equivalent to less than $5 in US dollars. I apologize for not noticing my error and causing confusion,

and please do not respond negatively to comments saying 20 is too much because they were posted before this edit.

The teacher was put in an impossible position, but the situation reveals a bigger issue: adults made a decision that affected a child and then expected someone else to fix the consequences.

The OP clearly tried to prevent the student from feeling excluded. The school’s activity required each child to bring a gift, and the parent was informed beforehand that choosing not to participate could result in the child feeling left out. The parent understood the arrangement and still decided her child would not exchange gifts.

What makes the situation complicated is that children often do not understand decisions made by adults. A parent may think, “My child won’t care,” but children can react differently when they see classmates participating in something they cannot join. The child’s sadness was real, even if the teacher was not responsible for creating that disappointment.

The teacher also went beyond what was required by purchasing a gift for every student, including the child whose family opted out. That was already an attempt to include everyone. The fact that the child did not want to risk exchanging the gift is not something the teacher could control.

The mother’s expectation that the teacher should have secretly prepared a second gift and charged her afterward is where the situation becomes unreasonable. Teachers often spend their own money and emotional energy supporting students, but they cannot be expected to predict every possible reaction or take over responsibilities that belong to parents.

At the same time, this story highlights why schools need to be careful with activities involving gifts. Even small exchanges can unintentionally create situations where children feel different from their classmates.

A more inclusive approach could be having the school provide identical small gifts for everyone or making participation optional without a visible difference between students.

The child was not at fault for being upset, and the teacher was not wrong for respecting the parent’s choice. The responsibility ultimately belonged to the adults who made the decision.

The healthiest response now would be for the parent and school to focus on the child’s experience rather than continuing a conflict. The teacher already showed care by trying to include the student; expecting her to solve every consequence afterward is unfair.

Here’s what people had to say to OP:

These commenters blamed the parent for ignoring warnings and causing the child’s disappointment

Ashamed-Falcon923 − NTA. The mom only has herself to blame. You warned her from the beginning, but she ignored you.

Now she's blaming you because it's easier than admitting this happened due to her own decisions.

burner_suplex − NTA. You explicitly warned her that her child might feel left out and she still chose not to buy even a small cheap gift to participate with.

YOU did not deliberately keep her kid from participating and even prepared a gift that she could have used to participate had she chosen to.

That her mom claims it's not her fault because she didn't think her kid would care signals a failure on her part to communicate with her child.

If it's an issue of not being able to afford a gift that's unfortunate, but I think it's unfair of her to tell people that you kept her child from...

It would be unfair to the other kids if you bought an extra gift for her while their parents had to purchase one.

I wonder if she was counting on you buying one to allow her kid to participate.

VexedVixen69 − NTA I read where the whole school did it. So you couldn't, not do it.

And the girl had a choice to use your gift, but she chose not to. This isn't on you. This is on her parents.

Bottom line, Mom didn't care that her child would be left out. It's all on her. Not you.

Josephcooper96 − NTA. The mom is. She was fine with her kid being left out and didnt know the kid would care enough to cry?

What kind of mother thinks like that? Especially since theyre a child! Of course theyre going to care! Like wtf?

I cant fathom her thinking. You did warn her and she chose to put her kid through that anyway.

The mom made a mistake not you. You did your best. You did the best you could to make it fun and welcoming.

Events like this are common in schools at certain points of the year especially toward the end especially elementary schools as this sounds like.

souljaboyyuuaa − 100% the mom’s fault. She was warned, and then blamed her mistake on others because she just assumed her kid wouldn’t care about being left out.

If she genuinely could not afford even a small gift, she would not have said that it should’ve been the teacher’s responsibility

to provide the child with a SECOND gift and then claim the cost from the mom after the fact.

Are all the teachers expected to have a stash of 20+ extra gifts in case multiple kids forgot to bring gifts or chose to not participate? ?

The mom knew her child would be left out, she didn’t care, and then blamed others defensively when she realized her own actions made her child cry.

These users criticized the activity setup and questioned whether schools should handle exclusions better

Single_Many597 − Yta for creating an activity that has no educational purpose but requires the parents to spend money.

The less said about the religious angle the better.

Adollfromnewalbion − So according to your replies you didnt create this situation, and its a school wide thing.

If that is the case then NTA, however, something like this should be brought up with the admin and discussed with other teachers.

Realistically its not fair for you to have to cover for parents that dont participate for whatever reason,

but obviously this puts the child in a sad position, being left out of the activities.

I assume not every teacher would by gifts for each of their students so what have they done in that situation?

Are the admin aware that this has been a situation caused by their choice to have an exchange in the first place?

Why is their no contingency created by the admin? If this is truly optional it shouldn't happen during school time,

allow students to opt out without having to sit in the metaphorical corner watching their peers have fun.

These commenters focused on preventing children from feeling excluded during school activities

Ace_boy08 − Wow you would think that for a school wide gift exchange they'd

at least have a separate activity for all the kids who could not participate so these kids don't have to watch.

Murky-Technician5123 − What is the economic situation of this family? $20 can be unaffordable to a lot of families.

Twitch2519 − NTA. A lot of people butthurt about this. She even discussed beforehand.

Everyone playing the religious angle are funny. 90% see Christmas as gifts. They are kids.

It's just how it is with everything nowadays. Frankly it saddens when I see kids that can't participate.

These are the same kids that hate summer break because its 2 months of struggle.

Some of these kids only eat because of school. If I knew there were struggling kids I would've figured something out for that activity

Should schools avoid gift-based activities altogether, or should parents take more responsibility when choosing not to participate? How would you handle this situation as a teacher or parent? Share your thoughts below!
