Brother Pays $200 For Babysitting, Then Expects Unlimited Food And Special Treatment

by Leona Pham

in Social Issues

Helping family is often done out of love, but even the most generous relatives have limits when their kindness starts being treated like an obligation.

The original poster (OP) regularly babysits her nephew for a small monthly payment that is supposed to cover her time, transportation, and food expenses.

When her nephew suddenly became obsessed with one expensive meal, OP tried to accommodate him at first.

However, when she could no longer afford to keep buying it, she expected him to eat the food she had already prepared.

Instead of appreciating her effort, her brother accused her of failing as a caregiver.

Read on to see why OP finally questioned whether she should continue babysitting.

Woman faces family backlash after refusing to spend extra money on pizza while babysitting her nephew for low pay

Brother Pays $200 For Babysitting, Then Expects Unlimited Food And Special Treatment
not the actual photo

'AITA for not buying pizza for my nephew and made him cry about it?'So I (32F) babysit my nephew (6M) (older brother's 36M kid) every Friday

afternoons and full days on weekends and holidays. I get paid $200 a

month that is supposed to include labor, gas for roundtrip transportation

to their homes, and also food.

My nephew recently entered his picky eating stage and it's been a struggle

feeding him lately. He started not liking what he used to eat so some foods

go to waste. His current obsession is cheese pizza so I've been buying

pizzas for him since the start of this month.

Well, yesterday, I've already had lunch prepared for him. But he started

having a fuss that he wants pizza again. Sadly, I am low on funds for it. For

context, I only provide food and whatever from the babysitting fee I get

paid. Pizzas have been expensive, y'all.

Anyway, I told him no we can't have pizza and that he needs to eat what we

already have. Which were chicken nuggets and fries, something he has

eaten and liked before.

He started crying really loud and shouting pizza. I said to him no again and

that he needs to learn about not wasting food. He wouldn't stop crying but

I wasn't gonna give in so I just let him cry.. He cried for a while but

eventually ate the nuggets and fries cause he got hungry.

Later in the evening, my brother called me and pretty much cussed me out

for leaving his kid crying for "hours" and not buying pizza for him. First off, I

don't think it was for hours, probably only been like an hour. Second, I

explained to him that I already had lunch prepared since I was low on funds

for pizzas. He eventually ate them anyway so not like he went hungry.. My

brother said those are not good excuses and it's not his kid's fault that I

cannot budget properly.

I said okay well pizzas are expensive so are you gonna raise the rates? He

said hell no. So I said then I should stop buying pizzas since it's gonna be an

overbudget. I refuse to spend my own personal money unless it's for a

present. He told me I'm being heartless and mean to my nephew.

I pretty much ended the call with, then you're free to find someone else to

babysit your kid then. This has caused a drama in my family where I am

painted as the bad aunt for not feeding my own nephew. My friends are

generally on my side, though a few said maybe I could have been nicer with

my delivery.. So AITA?. Edit: Just to add further context since it often comes up.

I do have another full time job but my schedule is pretty flexible. The

babysitting started as a favor since I rarely went out on weekends and

holidays. I had the free time and thought it'd be nice to earn some passive

income. And since I liked my nephew. I initially agreed on $200 a month

when I started babysitting my nephew when he was 3 years old. But as

demands grew, especially gas and food, I have asked for a rate adjustment

but each time got pushed back because my brother doesn't want me to see

it as a business transaction and more like family taking care of family.

My brother and SIL are actually off on weekends but they still wanted me

to babysit since they want the extra time to recover from working. There

are things I disagree with their parenting style but didn't include as I felt it was off topic.

Edit 2: Also as it comes up often. Unfortunately, I cannot do frozen or

homemade pizzas. I've tried but he won't eat them. My nephew is so picky

that he will only eat pizza from the nearby Domino's.

Many people know the difficult feeling of wanting to help family while slowly realizing that the help has become an expectation.

The line between generosity and obligation can become blurry, especially when money, time, and emotional responsibility are involved.

In this situation, the OP was not simply refusing to buy a child a favorite meal.

The deeper issue was that she had taken on a caregiving role with limited compensation while also being expected to cover additional expenses.

Babysitting a child regularly already requires time, patience, transportation, and responsibility.

Adding the cost of specific foods, especially expensive ones requested frequently, changes the arrangement entirely.

The conflict was not really about pizza; it was about whether the OP should continue absorbing costs that were never part of the original agreement.

A different perspective is that the brother may have been reacting emotionally as a parent who heard that his child was upset.

Many parents struggle when they imagine their child crying or feeling disappointed, and they may instinctively want someone to fix the situation immediately.

However, children also need to learn that they cannot always get what they want, especially when there are reasonable limits.

A child being upset does not automatically mean an adult has done something wrong.

This insight applies directly to the situation because the OP did not neglect her nephew.

She provided a meal he had previously enjoyed, stayed firm during his frustration, and allowed him time to calm down.

The larger concern is that the family arrangement appears to have changed without proper discussion.

What started as a favor has gradually included more responsibilities, while the payment stayed the same.

The brother’s argument that the OP should “budget better” overlooks an important detail: she is already providing a service that benefits the family.

If the cost of food, gas, and childcare has increased, it is reasonable to revisit the agreement.

Family support should not mean one person silently carries the financial burden while everyone else benefits.

Ultimately, the OP’s situation highlights why clear expectations matter, even among relatives.

Helping family can be meaningful, but it should not require someone to ignore their own financial limits.

A healthier solution would involve an honest conversation about childcare costs, responsibilities, and what each person can realistically provide.

Let’s dive into the reactions from Reddit:

These commenters agreed that OP is severely underpaid and being taken advantage of for providing extensive childcare

ConflictGullible392 − NTA but even without the pizza you are being

ridiculously underpaid.

be_sugary − NTA They are paying you pennies for your time. The parents

should pay for the food. You are being taken advantage of completely. Any

family member who is unhappy with you can take on the work. Step away

and get paid what you are worth elsewhere. You are not a child to be paid

$200 like a 15 year old. Good luck 🤞

userphoenix − NTA. Stop babysitting until you renegotiate the terms. 1.

Higher salary: at least $1000/month for the labor: (6 hours for the Friday

afternoon and 12 hours for each weekend = 30 hours time four weeks is

$1800 at $15/hour; consider it a family discount per hour). 2. They stock

the house with foods for the nephew.

And if they want him to have pizza, they either have them in the freezer or

give you money to order out. Few daycares cover food for their charges, if

any. 3. An apology for not appreciating all that you have done at an

extremely reduced rate. You are the aunt, not the parent. You are

responsible for spoiling the kid and keeping him occasionally.

It is not your job to raise the kid for nearly half each week. Do not back

down. They can find out the hard way what you've provided at an

extremely low rate. And for family who are your back, tell them they are

free to offer their services since they are family too.

I_eat_paper12 − You're giving up all of your weekends and holidays for

$2400/ year? ? There's no one else on the planet who would do that. He's

lucky to have you

lMyOpinionsl − If I read this correctly and you babysit every friday

afternoon through sunday and you are getting $200 a month that is around

$20 a day. Not per hour. Per day. Do a quick google search to see what child

care costs in your area and compare. My guess is you are being taken advantage of.

Im sure you are offering a family discount but its like a 90% discount

These commenters argued that OP should stop babysitting or renegotiate because the current arrangement is unfair and unsustainable

Neither_Tomorrow_253 − Why are you wasting your free time for just 200

dollars? Helping them once in a while is fine but spending all your

weekends and holidays taking care of someone else’s kid for peanuts is crazyy

grrrrowlhissss − NTA. They should be paying YOU more plus paying for his

food. Make them find another sitter and they’ll quickly realize what they lost by being jerks.

Cute-Significance450 − You're being taken advantage of. Stop being your brother's doormat.

HillBillyMadman − He's underpaying you incredibly, first off. And you

shouldn't be budgeting food for HIS kid out of your salary. If his kid wants

pizza, daddy can pay for it. NTA

These commenters supported OP setting boundaries and making the child’s parents responsible for food costs and childcare expenses

Worth_Kangaroo_6900 − Hard no. If your brother wants the kid to have pizza he can fund jt

kam302 − NTA. Your brother is taking advantage of you.

__mr__meeseeks__ − NTA and I would stop babysitting too. You are being

paid far too little. If you were to continue babysitting, agree an hourly rate

and that your brother covers all expenses. He's taking advantage

leddik02 − NTA. You are already doing them a huge favor. I would let them

find their own child care for now until they sincerely apologize or raise your

rates enough to pay for the pizza.

The OP agreed to babysit her nephew for a small monthly payment, but over time the expectations grew far beyond what was originally agreed.

She was expected to cover transportation, food, and now even expensive brand-specific meals for a picky eater.

When she finally refused to buy another pizza and offered the meal she had already prepared, her nephew had a meltdown, but eventually ate.

Instead of appreciating the effort, her brother blamed her and refused to increase the payment.

Was the OP being unreasonable, or was her brother taking advantage of a family favor?
