Woman Walks Out After Future BIL Mentions Her Fiancé’s Ex for the Hundredth Time

No one expects a partner’s past to disappear, but most people do expect the present relationship to be treated with consideration. Constant comparisons can quietly wear down even the most patient person, especially when the comments continue after several requests to stop.

The original poster (OP) had tolerated years of stories about her fiancé’s former wife before finally asking his brother to leave the subject alone. Instead, the brother kept mentioning her and even announced that he knew OP did not want to hear it.

At a recent family dinner, OP chose to remove herself rather than start an argument. Read on to see how Reddit judged her decision and why many people focused on the fiancé’s response.

not the actual photo

'AITAH for walking out at my future MIL’s birthday dinner?'

I (36F) been with my fiancé (46M) for 6 years, and engaged for 2. When we met, he was newly divorced with no kids.

Since I’ve been with my fiancé, his older brother (49M) has managed to bring up my fiancé’s ex-wife at every family gathering.

Every. Single. Time. Thanksgivings, Christmases, and birthdays included.

Everyone has a past, so I tried to be polite and just hear out his grievances about her in the beginning.

(At first, I admittedly enjoyed getting the tea about why their marriage didn’t work out, but after 6 years of hearing about her, I’d finally had enough.)

I tried to set a boundary and asked future BIL to please not mention my fiancé’s ex-wife around me anymore.

After being with his brother for this long, I feel like I’ve earned that respect, but he continues to bring her up.

Now, he just prefaces his stories about her with, “I know you don’t want to hear this, but his ex would \_\_\_\_,”

or “sorry to mention her again, but \_\_\_\_\_ would have \_\_\_\_ differently.”

He did it again recently at their mother’s birthday dinner, and I finally had enough.

This time, I was so fed up with the repeated disrespect of my boundaries

that I walked out of the restaurant (at the tail end of the night) to get some fresh air and cool off.

So, AITAH for walking out of my future MIL’s birthday dinner because of this? Should I have stayed and sucked it up?

Asked my fiancé to have yet another conversation with his brother about having more respect for me and our relationship?

Being repeatedly compared with someone from a partner’s past can make even a secure person feel as though they are competing with a ghost.

The OP did not walk out because an ex-wife’s name was mentioned once. She stepped away after six years of hearing the same person inserted into holidays, birthdays, and family conversations despite clearly asking for that pattern to stop.

The emotional conflict is rooted in accumulated disrespect. At first, the stories may have felt like harmless family history, and the OP even admits she once enjoyed hearing them.

Over time, however, the brother-in-law’s comments became less accidental and more provocative. Prefacing them with “I know you don’t want to hear this” shows that he understands the request but chooses to continue anyway.

For the OP, each new comparison may reinforce the feeling that her place in the family is still being measured against a former spouse. Walking outside near the end of dinner appears less like an attempt to punish the mother-in-law and more like an effort to avoid finally exploding at the table.

A different perspective is that the brother-in-law may be using the ex-wife as a familiar character in old family stories rather than consciously trying to undermine the engagement. Some families preserve former relatives through shared memories long after a divorce.

Yet intent stops being the central issue once someone knows their behavior is causing distress and deliberately repeats it. His disclaimers do not soften the comments; they emphasize that he is overriding her discomfort.

The Gottman Institute explains that boundaries recognize a basic reality: people cannot control what others say or do, but they can decide how they will respond and what they will remain present for. Healthy limits may create temporary separation, yet they are necessary for protecting emotional well-being and preserving relationships.

Psychologist Andrea Bonior similarly notes that repeated boundary-pushing involves ignoring or testing a clearly expressed limit, and that maintaining the boundary often requires calm, consistent action rather than further explanation.

Applied here, the OP’s original request was not entirely enforceable because she cannot control which subjects her future brother-in-law mentions. Leaving the conversation, however, is an enforceable boundary: “When you compare me with the ex-wife, I will step away.” Her brief exit therefore matched the limit she was trying to establish.

The fiancé’s role is now crucial. This is his family, his former marriage, and his brother repeatedly disrespecting his future spouse. He should not wait for her to endure another gathering before intervening. Before the next event, he can state that comparisons involving his ex are unwelcome and that the couple will leave if they continue.

The OP may owe her future mother-in-law a brief explanation if the departure disrupted the birthday, but she does not owe an apology for protecting herself. Staying silent would have preserved the dinner’s appearance while allowing resentment to deepen. Sometimes walking away is not dramatic; it is the most restrained response left.

Let’s dive into the reactions from Reddit:

These Redditors suggested turning the questions back on the brother and exposing his obsession with the ex

Outrageous_Rabbit842 − “BIL, I find it really weird how obsessed you are with ex-SIL. It’s like she’s all you can think about.

I, and I’m sure many others, think you should get therapy to deal with this, your obsession has been widely noted”. NTA

KLG999 − You need to start turning the tables on him. “Fiancé” moved on six years ago. I’m confused why you are still so obsessed with “ex”.

Did you have a relationship more than BIL/SIL? Do you still have a relationship? Walking away is understandable. Not the best choice on MILs birthday.

elguapo1996 − “Why are you always talking about her? Is your brother’s ex-wife your entire identity?

Do you have some weird obsession with her even, what is it - six years later? !? You really need to get a life of your own. Or a wife...

cakivalue − You shouldn't have done it at your MILs event.

But the next time he does it smile at him, giggle and say"I've finally figured out what this is about" giggle

then in a sing song voice go "someone has a crush, someone has a crush" then laugh and then say "but seriously though are you still talking to her

and hanging out with her Jim because I don't understand why you are always centering her in situations

and events that have absolutely nothing to do with her?" Please let me know how it goes.

These commenters questioned why the fiancé had not defended OP or confronted his brother

GrandPipe5878 − Why isn't your fiance shutting down the comments from his own brother?

Maybe you walking out like that will finally kickstart your fiance to defend you.

Pookie1688 − So, why isn't your bf dealing with his rude & obsessed brother?

These users felt leaving during the mother-in-law’s birthday unfairly disrupted her event

MistressJacklynHyde − You can only set boundaries for yourself. You cannot ask him not to bring her up, but you CAN do

what you did and walk out if he does. Though doing it at your MIL's birthday dinner was a bit much. Especially since she did nothing wrong.

Sparklingwine23 − YTA for doing it at your MILs event as she isnt the one doing it.

You should have done it at an event of his or somewhere more neutral than her birthday dinner at a restaurant, thats pretty classless.

That being said, you and your fiance obviously need to have a conversation with him about this.

Only-Breadfruit-6108 − An alternative to walking out would have been to interrupt his story with “are we really still talking about her?

Even though I’ve asked you to show some respect? ” And hopefully your fiance would back you up.

No scenes are necessary. No one needs to leave the table. Yes, sorry, YTA. So is the BiL obviously but this is about you.

BLTplease2030 − Apologise to your future MIL. The brother is an AH.

Should the fiancé take full responsibility for shutting his brother down from now on? Was leaving quietly more respectful than confronting him at the table, or should the woman have waited until after the birthday?
