Bride Refuses to Pay Sister a “Bride Price” After Years of Being Left to Care for Their Mother Alone

Family expectations can become complicated when traditions, money, and years of unresolved resentment all collide.

Sometimes the hardest part is realizing that a tradition meant to honor family does not feel meaningful when the people involved have not been there for you.

The original poster (OP) is preparing to marry her fiancé and has already decided to have a simpler American-style wedding instead of following the traditional customs from her culture.

One major tradition she does not plan to include is the bride price, which would normally involve money being given to her family.

OP feels strongly that her siblings should not receive anything because they left her to handle the responsibility of caring for their aging mother alone for years.

When her sister suddenly claimed she deserved the money because she helped raise OP as a child, it reopened years of frustration and hurt.

Now OP has decided to remove her sister from the wedding entirely and keep her plans private.

Scroll down to see whether Reddit agrees with her decision.

Bride-to-be refuses to follow her cultural wedding tradition

'Older sister thinks she "deserves" my bride price money?'

Everyone in this post are over age 30.

I am engaged to my fiance. I am Asian and he's white. In my culture we have

what's called a bride price. It's an agreed upon (by both parties) amount of

money the groom pays to the bride's parents or a sibling if parents are

deceased. In my culture our weddings lasts 2 days and it's long and tedious

so I've made it clear to my fiance from the beginning that we'd be having

an American wedding instead and he's fine with it. My sister thinks we are

having a wedding in my culture despite me telling her at least twice in the

past it'll be an american wedding.

Long background short: all my many siblings basically left the burden of

taking care of our parents onto not too long after I finished high school. My

dad is passed for over a decade now so it's just been my mom and me. They

neither extended a helping hand nor barely helped even when my mom

asked them for just errands for her and always deferred it back to me.

Even when my elderly mom had a stroke and needed 24/7 care I told them I

will need help. They all say they'll help but don't. Even my brother who

lived with us at the time barely helped. My mom is in a nursing home now

getting proper care as she also developed dementia after her stroke. My

mom of course cannot handle fianance.

My sister messaged me the other day and wedding planning came up and

she mentioned the wedding in my culture since fiance and I haven't really

planned anything as a wedding is not priority. I told her I won't be having a

wedding in my culture because none of my siblings deserves the money.

She told me she "deserves" the money because she helped take care of me

when I was younger (8 year age gap between us) Spoiler: she got married

not too long after finishing high school and moved out of state to live with

her husband so she literally only helped my parents babysit me here and

there until maybe I was 10 or not even 10.

Y'all my brain stalled and I could not think of where the audacity came from

and every time I think of it I still can't wrap my mind around the

entitlement so now wedding plans changed and she is no longer invited

and won't know any of my plans either.

Family relationships are often tested when traditions, money, and old wounds collide.

What appears to be a simple disagreement about a wedding can actually reveal years of unspoken resentment, unmet expectations, and feelings of being taken for granted.

In this situation, OP is not only deciding who should receive a traditional bride price.

She is confronting a much deeper question: who truly supported her and her family when responsibility became difficult?

The emotional center of this conflict is not the money itself.

OP spent years carrying responsibilities that she feels were abandoned by her siblings, especially while caring for an aging mother with serious health problems.

The bride price represents more than a cultural custom; it represents recognition, respect, and gratitude.

From OP’s perspective, the idea that siblings who were absent during the hardest moments could later claim a financial benefit feels like a painful reminder that they want the rewards of family without having shared the burdens.

A different perspective is that OP’s sister may not see the situation through the same emotional timeline.

She may view childhood involvement, even limited support, as meaningful and worthy of acknowledgment.

Some family members measure their contributions based on memories of what they did, while others measure them based on what they sacrificed over many years.

Neither perspective automatically erases the other, but problems arise when one person’s contribution is treated as equal to another person’s long-term responsibility.

This insight helps explain why the bride price conversation became so explosive.

To OP’s sister, it may have sounded like a question of fairness or tradition.

To OP, it likely felt like someone claiming credit for a role they did not truly fulfill.

After years of feeling alone in caring for her mother, hearing that her sister “deserved” the money may have reopened feelings of abandonment.

At the same time, OP’s decision to remove her sister from the wedding is not only about punishment.

It may be an attempt to create emotional safety during an important life event.

Weddings often bring unresolved family tensions to the surface, especially when old roles and expectations are involved.

However, the long-term question is whether OP wants permanent distance or whether she wants acknowledgment and accountability from her family.

Boundaries can be necessary, especially after years of carrying responsibilities alone.

But the strongest boundaries are usually built around protecting peace rather than proving who was right.

OP’s experience raises a difficult but important question for many families: should traditions automatically reward biological relationships, or should they honor the people who actually showed up when life became challenging?

See what others had to share with OP:

These commenters argued the bride price should support the living mother or reflect OP’s caregiving

_Foolish_ − You should record the conversation, or keep screenshots of

emails and texts. Then go “mom is still alive. In our culture, a bride price

goes to the parents first and then only if they’ve BOTH passed would you

even be considered. Shame on you for wishing for our mother to die so you

could get some money.

If there was a bride price to be paid, it would be to mom, and to pay off any

bills for her care. ”

Inevitable_Lake4801 − If i were you I would buy something nice for my

mom and tell my siblings that was paid with the bride price money as my

mother is still alive

Express-Educator4377 − Tell her the bride price had been given to your

mother for her care over the years.

MrsSpriggs88 − "I paid my own bride price by taking care of Mom all alone

for X number of years. If you feel that you deserve the money to pay for

the handful of times you babysat me as a child, then I'll deduct that from

the tens of thousands you owe me for my independent caregiving for our Mom.

Will you be paying by cash or check? "

These commenters criticized the sister’s behavior as entitled and viewed the demand as exploiting OP financially

vosot − I think we both might be from the same culture. Your sister doesn’t

deserve anything. She is not entitled to anything. When I married, my

partner and I did not have a traditional wedding.

However, we still paid my bride price even though he was from outside of

the culture — $5,800. They kept $800 and regifted the remaining money

back to us along with a bunch of other gifts. I have a feeling your sister

wouldn’t do the same. It’s unfortunate she sees you as a cash cow instead of a sister.

Available-Effort2716 − The money for “bride price” actually comes out of

your future shared savings. So she wants your money too. Tell your greedy

sister to go kick rocks

Soulstrom1 − There are many more diplomatic ideas proposed here. I am

no diplomat, tell her to get F'd and go on with your life and be happy.

These commenters advised OP to stop explaining details

hawken54321 − Stop telling everybody everything. Stop telling everybody

ANYTHING. Go your own way.

lantana98 − Tell her to go ahead and ask your fiancé for money if she really

wants to see him laugh in her face.

These commenters suggested challenging the sister

marginmanj − Say bride price is being paid to mom and mom said you could

have it as a wedding gift

Character_Platypus23 − You could explain to her that in his culture the

family of the bride pays for the wedding and ask if she wants to cover any of the bills.

After years of carrying the responsibility of caring for her mother while her siblings stayed distant, the OP felt hurt when her sister suddenly claimed entitlement to a cultural wedding tradition.

What began as a conversation about wedding plans reopened old wounds about family support, sacrifice, and recognition.

Some may feel cultural traditions should be honored regardless of past conflicts, while others believe OP has every right to decide who receives that financial gesture.

Was OP protecting herself from being taken advantage of, or did she let resentment decide?
