She Didn’t Tell Her Parents She Was in Labor, and They Called Her a Liar Who Broke the Family

Some family conflicts do not explode all at once. They build across years of small boundary crossings until one quiet decision finally tips everything over. A woman in her early thirties found herself accused of lying and selfishness by her own parents after she chose not to tell them she was in labor with her second child. The accusation stung enough on its own.

What made it worse was that it came at the exact moment her body needed calm the most, and the stress that followed sent her postpartum recovery sideways.

Here is how it all unfolded.

'AITAH for lying to my parents to hurt them?'

I (32F) and my partner (36M) are private people, we don’t use social media much and keep our circles small. I’m gonna condense 2 years of problems into a post...

In 2024 we got pregnant with our first, usually people announce at 12 weeks, we decided to do it at 9 weeks. I asked my close family to keep it...

I told them that the day of the birth would be partner and I alone and they could come visit the day after. They werent happy but agreed. On the...

They waited 8 hours outside so I felt bad and we still let them see the baby and chat to us briefly when we were moved from the birth room...

They spent the next week visiting every single day, and posted breastfeeding photos of me and baby nude.

I was horrified and asked them to take them down, they straight up said no.

I was postpartum, hormonal, feeling humiliated and struggling with milk production so this time I didn’t let it go.

I asked them to stop visiting for a couple of weeks until I was feeling more capable of being in control, we resumed visits after 3 weeks, they never forgave...

When we got pregnant with our second, we decided to wait till 12 weeks to announce it to prevent leaks and again had the same conversation with my parents, no...

We argued a lot about it, they called me selfish and yelled at me a few times (yelling at a pregnant woman is weird to me) but I ignored it.

The day of the birth my doula couldn’t make it so I invited my sister, I asked her not to tell my parents I was in labour to prevent them...

The next day I texted them the news, they were in the hospital within an hour.

A week postpartum they came to my home to visit and they were both very distant and cold, I knew exactly what was happening so I tried to ignore it...

They called me selfish for denying them the chance to see the babies at birth, they said I‘m a liar because I should have told them I was pregnant the...

and withdrew information from them and keep them from the joy of knowing I was pregnant those 12 weeks.

They said that I have no family or cultural values and principles and that they are so hurt they need some space away from me to figure things out. I...

A few days after, I get a call from my sister, they told her that she is also a liar for not telling them I was in labour and that...

I’m so confused this is typical of my mom but very unusual for my dad.

I was hurt, within a day my milk production dropped from the stress and my baby got jaundice.

We ended up having to go to the hospital and draw blood multiple times, I’m power pumping between tears and my poor partner is caught in the middle trying his...

Baby is recovering well but I’m wondering what the hell? am I really a liar and selfish?

are people required to disclose these things to parents? or is this deranged behaviour? I can’t tell what’s what and I’m too hormonal to think! this all seems so blown...

The pattern started two years earlier with her first pregnancy. She and her partner asked family to keep the news private until the standard twelve week mark, only for it to leak anyway. She let that go. She asked for the day of the birth to belong to just her and her partner, with visits starting the following day, and her parents agreed, then showed up at the hospital anyway, waiting eight hours and pressuring staff until they were let in briefly.

She let that go too. During the first postpartum week, her parents visited daily and posted nude breastfeeding photos of her and the baby online, refusing to take them down when asked. That, finally, was the one thing she could not simply absorb. She asked for a few weeks of space to recover. Her parents never forgave her for it.

By the time her second pregnancy came around, she tried to hold the same two boundaries, delayed announcement and no visitors on birth day, and this time her parents argued, called her selfish, and raised their voices at a pregnant woman more than once. When labor actually started, she asked her sister, who was standing in for a doula who could not make it, not to tell their parents.

The birth went smoothly. She texted the news the next day. Her parents arrived at the hospital within the hour, then showed up cold and distant a week later, accusing her of lying by omission and of stripping them of the joy of knowing about the pregnancy sooner. Her sister got dragged into it too, accused of helping keep secrets and breaking the family apart. Within a day, the stress had visibly affected the new mother’s body. Her milk supply dropped, and her newborn developed jaundice serious enough to require hospital visits and repeated blood draws.

None of this happened by accident. Each time a boundary was set, it got tested, then breached, then treated as though it had never existed at all. The nude photo incident in particular reads less like a lapse in judgment and more like a signal, an early sign of what happens when a boundary is voiced clearly and still ignored.

Dr. Sarah Allen, a perinatal psychologist who specializes in postpartum mental health, has written about exactly this kind of collision, describing how the weeks after birth are especially volatile because exhausted, physically recovering parents are hyper alert to anything that threatens their newborn, while grandparents often feel an urgent pull to bond in ways that override what they were actually asked to do. Allen frames the anger that follows not as an overreaction but as a protective signal, the nervous system registering that a boundary meant to keep a baby safe has been crossed.

That framing reshapes the whole conflict. This was never really about whether she technically lied by not calling the moment labor began. It was about a body and a nervous system that had already learned, through two pregnancies worth of ignored requests, that a stated boundary would not be respected unless it was also hidden from the people most likely to break it. Withholding the timing of labor was not deception. It was the only protective measure left once every direct request had already failed.

It is worth sitting with how quickly the accusation of lying got weaponized here, spreading from the new mother to her sister within days, and escalating into claims about breaking apart the family entirely. That kind of rapid, coordinated guilt is rarely really about the specific omission being named. It tends to be about restoring a version of control that had quietly slipped away.

Here's the comments of Reddit users:

Reddit had plenty to say about this one. The response was overwhelmingly supportive, with commenters distinguishing clearly between withholding information and actually lying, and several pointing out that the parents’ own actions during the first birth, particularly the unauthorized photos, had already forfeited the trust needed for the second.

CherryGripe75 − your family is selfish and toxic, you need to lower contact. NTA

r4catstoomant − Not providing information does not translate to lying. Actions have consequences. Are your parents involved in their grandkids’ lives? Please tell me you’re low contact!

winebookscats − *If* they had respected your request to keep your pregnancy secret the first time, you'd have trusted them the second time.

*If* they had respected your decision for them not to visit until the day after birth for your first baby, you'd have let them know you were in labour with...

*if* they had taken down those very intimate, personal photos from social media when asked

(or, better still, not posted them in the first place without permission! ) you'd have let them be present at similar occasions for your second. They didn't. That's on them.

WomanInQuestion − NTA - you should read the book “Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents” by Lindsay Gibson. It will fully explain why your parents are the way they are...

kayjax7 − NTA - your parents sound extremely pushy. Withholding information is not lying. They almost sound like they wouod want to know exactly when you are trying to conceive!...

No-Daikon3645 − NTA. You have done NOTHING wrong. You need to focus on your nuclear family and temporarily block your parents. They are selfish and narcissistic and are causing you...

Just focus on your kids and wait until YOU want to see/speak with the parents. This is all about them, their needs and their wants. They don't care what is...

Please put yourself first and don't let them, or their flying monkeys, make you feel guilty about prioritising your recovery and your baby's health. Just enjoy your babies.

A number of commenters recommended therapy and literature on emotionally immature parenting, framing this less as an isolated dispute and more as a long pattern finally reaching its limit.

Responsible_Joke8618 − NTA. It is not the hormones. You are not blowing anything out of proportion. Your parents are controlling and in fact deranged.

PlayingGrabAss − If my parents acted like this with my first, they would not be meeting my second.

EmrysTheBlue − NTA. Your parents sound entitled af and don't respect you. They're trying to guilt trip you into doing what they want, and it's worked enough times they feel...

The fact you didn't kick up a stink the first birth where they shoved their way in daily gave them confidence that your boundaries don't actually matter because they can...

Cool, thank you! They can't walk all over you if they aren't shoving their way in where they aren't wanted.

You're not a child, you're in your 30s and have every right to tell them to p__s off until you're ready to see them.

Your baby, your body, your timeline. Not theirs. Honestly I'd be going low contact with them and information diet.

Standing up for yourself and holding firm on consequences for ignoring your wishes and boundaries is the only way to go unless you want this to continue.

They're lashing out at you not because you did anything wrong, but because they don't like being told no

NiceParkingSpot_Rita − NTA. Your pregnancies and birth are about you and your partner/children.

NOT them. They are being selfish and entitled. To put their newly postpartum daughter through all this worry and stress is absolutely sick.

You deserve to be loved and supported right now, not manipulated and abused! Thats what they’re a doing, OP. They’re abusing you.

They’re ruining what should be a beautiful time for your little family. You did nothing wrong. You did what you could to have a peaceful labor.

They’re angry they couldn’t control you. I’m glad you moved a couple hours away. The distance will help you. You have NOTHING to feel guilty about. You did NOTHING wrong.

They are terrible people to do these things to you. The fact that they cant be trusted to just be there for you during the most vulnerable time in your...

You deserve better. I hope you do find some happiness and peace right now.

You seem to be a loving mother and you deserve to be loved by those around you. Surround yourself with the people who can do that for you.

None of this is your fault. They’re the reason all of this has happened. For different reasons, I had to cut off my mother during my second pregnancy.

I’m not advocating that, as it’s a very deeply personal and painful choice.

But I just want you to know that I understand how it feels to go through having a new baby and being put through the wringer by parents who are...

If you don’t have a therapist, I highly recommend it. Especially during early postpartum, when your mind and body are beyond exhausted and everything is so heightened.

All that said, I want to tell you congratulations on your beautiful new baby! Soak in that adorable newborn scrunch, it’s the cutest thing on the planet.

Anytime you feel o__rwhelmed or sad about this whole situation, love on those babies. It does help. This is such a beautiful, yet difficult time. Give yourself grace and lean...

Remind yourself anytime you feel low that you are a great mother. A great daughter and sister and that you are enough. Sending you all the love and strength. 🩷

A boundary that gets crossed once and never enforced tends to get crossed again, and that is exactly the education two births apparently provided here. What looks, from a distance, like a daughter keeping secrets is really a new mother trying to protect the one thing she had left control over, her own body and her own birth. Was withholding a phone call really the betrayal her parents made it out to be, or was it simply what finally worked
