Hotel Guest Claims VIP Status Until One Phone Call Exposes His Entire Discount Scheme

Some people are lucky enough to receive special treatment, but there is a big difference between appreciating a privilege and believing you are entitled to it forever. A little kindness can quickly turn into a problem when someone starts pushing boundaries.

A hotel employee shared the story of a guest who received a major discount through a special senior housing partnership. At first, the program helped many wonderful guests enjoy affordable stays, but one man began acting like the rules did not apply to him.

After repeatedly using the owner’s name to get his way, he eventually pushed things too far. The employee decided to stop playing along, and the guest soon discovered that his so-called VIP status was not as powerful as he thought. Scroll down to see how the situation unfolded.

'Mr. VIP overplays his hand. Loses the VIP'

The hotel I worked at, was owned by a real-estate investor who owned serval different properties across the state, us being his one and only Hotel.

As such he was he had this deal with an Senior Apartment Complex he owned

about 4hrs away where their tenants would get a 75% discount at whatever our RACK rate was.

Same rules to the employee rate applied, with the added exceptions

that they could only rent out QQs and had to make the reservations thru their leasing office.

Most guests who stayed with us over the years with that discount were sweet older people

who were grateful to be able to come out and get such a heavily discount considering where we were located.

But as the as the old saying goes: give someone an inch, and they will take a mile.

There were three guests who were very problematic, they'd have a laundry list of complaints, nag about the rate,

and try to get any form of compensation they could. But one guy Mr.

VIP acted like he owned the place and whenever he wouldn't get his way, would name drop the owner like it was his "I Win" card.

The owner, being the eccentric old man that he was, would on occasion visit properties at random to check up, meet with the crew.

Right before he'd leave, there'd be an empty offer to "take us all golfing one of these days".

I guess on one of these visits Mr. VIP met the owner and got it in his mind, that he was in fact VIP.

Mr. VIP started booking his rooms once or twice a month with the leasing office.

He'd then call us directly and ask if we can get him an additional room and upgrade it to a jacuzzi suite for his shiny rock status benefit.

He'd then show up with either family members or long time friends, giving them a tour of the place,

bragging that his friend the owner lets him stay here whenever he wants for $30 - $40 a night.

After a few months prior to the incident, Mr. VIP got bold enough to forgo going thru the leasing agent,

and calling his reservations directly every other week, and asking for "his" room at the "usual rate".

The problems started when we went into peak season, and changed the special rate to 50% off.

Mr. VIP would throw a fit at check in, that we were overcharging him ($109 rate btw)

and that he was going to talk to the owner, but nothing would come of it.

The day his power trip came to and end, was the day we gave the Jacuzzi suite upgrade to a Ultra Shiny Rock member who was paying Rack rate.

Mr. VIP showed up with his son to check in, and was livid when they went to the rooms only to find out they were 2 QQs.

Mr. VIP: "Why the F**k would you give away my room if you knew I was arriving today."

Me: "Im sorry, but as its explained on the confirmation letter you get from the leasing office.

Standard reservations have priority over your special rate and upgrades are based on availability.".

Mr. VIP's Son: "Dude, dont be a d__k. Just give my dad the room.". Me: "It doesn't work like that, I cant just give him a room I dont have."

Mr. VIP: "Im a friend of Mr. Greg's, and he knew I was coming to town. If you don't give me my room, you'll be lucky if you still have...

Me: calling his bluff  "Oh, Mr. Greg set up your reservation? Im sorry about that, let me call his assistant Claire.

Shes usually the one that sets up reservations for VIPs on his behalf.". Mr. VIP: "F**k you!" storms off

15mins later queue call from corporate. Mr. VIP called to complain about his room being given away, and not getting the rate he was promised, etc.

I explain to them the situation, and the special rate he has.

After the whole situation was laid out, the corporate rep said that they'd close his ticket, but would be flagging his Shiny Rock Status for review.

Apparently heavily discounted rooms do not count as qualified stays towards your membership tier.

At this point Im fuming, so I decide too call the leasing office of his apartment complex to complain.

Come to find out that Mr. VIP moved out of the complex 2 months ago.. Perfect! I call our GM and explain everything.

I wasn't there for the fall-out, but Mr. VIP had to cut his trip short once the GM explained we had called the leasing office.

He was told we would honor the special rate for the first two nights, but the remainder of his stay would only be at the 10% senior discount.

I also pulled up his rewards number the following week, and saw he had been demoted to a mid tier level. He hasnt been back since lol

Respect is often revealed by how people behave when they are no longer getting exactly what they want. Some people appreciate kindness and special treatment, while others begin to see generosity as something they are entitled to receive.

In this situation, the OP was not dealing with a guest who simply misunderstood a discount policy. He was dealing with someone who turned a privilege into a personal status symbol.

The emotional dynamic of this story centers around entitlement and identity. Mr. VIP was originally given an opportunity that many guests would have appreciated: a significant discount because of a partnership between the hotel and a senior community.

Most people treated the arrangement as a kindness, but he gradually began treating it as proof that he deserved special recognition.

The discount became less about saving money and more about feeling important. His repeated name-dropping of the owner, demands for upgrades, and assumption that rules did not apply to him suggest that he had built an identity around being an exception.

A different perspective is that this situation shows how privileges can sometimes change the way people view fairness. When someone receives special treatment repeatedly, they may stop seeing it as generosity and start seeing it as a right. The hotel staff were not taking something away from him; they were simply returning the arrangement to its original boundaries.

The guest’s frustration likely came from confusing familiarity with ownership. Knowing the owner did not mean he controlled the hotel’s operations or outranked paying customers who followed normal procedures.

Psychologist Dacher Keltner, who studies social behavior and power dynamics, has researched how feelings of elevated status can influence people’s interactions with others. His work suggests that when individuals feel powerful or entitled, they may become less attentive to social rules and other people’s perspectives.

However, environments with clear expectations and accountability can help prevent those behaviors from continuing unchecked.

This perspective explains why the OP’s response was effective. He did not argue about whether Mr. VIP was important. Instead, he brought the conversation back to the actual system: reservations, availability, and policies. The moment the guest’s imagined influence was tested against reality, the power dynamic changed.

His threats depended on the assumption that everyone would immediately back down when he mentioned the owner, but that only worked while people accepted the performance.

Ultimately, this story is a reminder that generosity requires boundaries. Discounts, favors, and special opportunities are meant to create goodwill, not create a hierarchy where someone believes they deserve more than everyone else.

The guests who appreciated the privilege were likely welcomed back because they understood the difference between being treated kindly and being treated as royalty. Mr. VIP lost his special status not because someone wanted to punish him, but because he forgot that respect is what keeps privileges alive.

Here’s what people had to say to OP:

These commenters enjoyed seeing an entitled person finally face consequences

Proud_Mistake_4686 − It’s spelled : k-a-r-m-a but it’s pronounced :“Muahahahahahahaha”

Gonpostlscott − Well he found out that throwing weight can have consequences! Hilarious!

This user shared a similar workplace story where a customer complained about a high bill

sdrawkcabstiho − It's called "Don't rock the boat. " I worked at customer care for an electrical utility.

Guy called in all spit & vinegar because our new digital meters were defective.

His power usage and cost went through the roof! I looked at his billing and it was indeed very concerning.

His bills went from $35 a month to well over $300.

This was far more than just a seasonal consumption jump. ..but I noticed that his monthly charges

before the new meter was installed matched almost identically to the delivery charge, so I did a little more digging.

His reading the amount of power recorded went from hundreds of kw/h per month to dozens

then single digits then it just stopped and had not changed for over 3 years.

His old meter died and the new one was working fine, his consumption was perfectly in line with his history from 7 years previous.

So, I told him this and that it's literally not possible for a meter to record 0 consumption for 3 years unless the power was completely disconnected.

If he insisted on having his meter checked, they would also have to check the old removed one and once they noticed it wasn't working,

they would back bill him for estimated consumption, which based on his current and past readings,

would likely result in a back due bill of well over $8,000. So, I told him "Hey, if you don't say anything, I won't say anything." He agreed.

They criticized people who use status or past achievements to mistreat others

forponderings − And his son is exactly the same, I see 🤦🏻‍♀️ it’s scary to know there are multiples of this exact type of character running around in the world.

Good on you for calling him out.

He managed to get this bold because throughout his life people around him chose the easier way out of just giving him whatever he wants. Not you, though!

redvoxfox − Thanks for sharing this & well done!

All too often corp. backs down or lets this kind of action slide because they're afraid of a bad review or hurting someone's (deranged) feelings.

The number of times we see someone flaunting some stratospheric-tier status that they either don't even have or used to have . .. gets old.

We even see people act like they have some status and privilege level they never had and ask for benefits and perqs they only heard or read about somewhere.

So good to see one of these get denied hard, especially after the entitled abuse and treating staff like that.  Thanks!!!  fwiw -

Best place I worked, the owner and his son, who mostly ran things, were both amazing and stood up for and behind staff consistently.

Their rule was that when any guest got abusive or used foul language at a staff member, we were to firmly warn them only once

and then if they continued or did it again they were gone, DNR, and had to go thru the owner to get off the DNR list.

It was amazing to work for an employer who actually did value staff as the most important part of the business and it wasn't just talk, he walked it.

He'd tell guests strait to their face that their business was not worth disruption or disrespect to staff, other guests or the business.  And he meant it.

He also stood behind us on following the rules on upgrades, special benefits and perqs.

It really followed his insistence and our training that every guest gets top-tier service

and that upgrades and special benefits are for truly exceptional guests and situations.

It helped that he fully owned the place and although it was an affiliate of a large network and took some third-party reservations,

it wasn't a franchise or corporate property so no one could strong arm us or threaten to 'call corporate. '

We loved it when he'd say, "I am corporate.  You're talking to me.  What can I do for you? "

These users focused on the importance of boundaries. They believed VIP status should not excuse harassment or disrespect toward workers.

YogurtOk2555 − The P should stand for Position, not person. What the VIP’s don’t understand is once you lost the P (position) you’re no longer I.

RoyallyOakie − It's a shame he got away with it for so long.

Throwmeallthewayawa − What happened to "you get what you get, and you don't throw a fit? " Wow.

ericzku − I mean. ..anybody who drops F-bombs at the staff at my hotel is going to be shown the door;

I don't care how important they think they are. I'm surprised there wasn't an issue made of that.

pakrat1967 − I admit I'm a bit disappointed. After all that build up about the owner offering to take everyone golfing.

I was expecting more involvement in Mr VIPs downfall.

Was honoring the first two nights already more generous than he deserved? Should hotels immediately remove guests who threaten staff, or offer one clear warning before ending the stay?
