Mother-in-Law Keeps Changing Baby’s Christening Date, But Mom Finally Says Enough

in Social Issues

Important family moments can become complicated when too many people want control over the details.

Even with the best intentions, trying to make everyone happy can leave one person feeling like their own wishes no longer matter.

The original poster (OP) wanted her baby’s christening to include her in-laws, who live overseas and only visit once a year.

She adjusted the date once to accommodate her mother-in-law’s plans, but after several more changes, OP reached a point where she felt she was constantly being asked to move things around.

Now, with the christening approaching, she has decided to keep the date that works best for her church and family.

Read on to see whether people think OP went too far or simply set a needed boundary.

New mother tries to arrange her baby’s christening around her in-laws’ visit

Mother-in-Law Keeps Changing Baby’s Christening Date, But Mom Finally Says Enough
not the actual photo

'AITAH for refusing to change my son's Christening date because his other grandparents won't be there?'

I (31f) have a baby boy that just turned 4 months. Around 3 to 4 months is

commonly when children in our church get christened. My in-laws moved to

another country to be with SIL. They come visit every year beginning of

June because it gets extremely hot there and it's winter here. So I

suggested that we move the christening to the first weekend in June

because they would've flown in before that weekend. And I wanted them

to be apart of atleast something of baby.

MIL contacted me around a month after baby was born and asked can we

move it to end of June because her sister something that weekend. I don't

fully remember the reason. But I called up the pastor and he said that's

fine. He can help the end of June weekend.

Now there's unrest in the country the in-laws live and the airports are

closed. They said they might open up middle of June. I thought great that

still gives them ample of time to get here.

MIL contacted me again and said that end of June won't work anymore for

her because she wants to see her sister first. July is out too because a lot of

birthdays are happening then and she won't be able to attend during a

weekend. Why don't we do the christening in the middle of August. On her

birthday ironically.

I felt bad and called the pastor again. He said that won't do. He's out of

town that weekend. (we live in a small community. Only 2 churches when

one pastor isn't here the congregation goes to the other church) He

already has 4 christenings booked that month (2 one Sunday and 2 the

next) and the other Sunday is our communion. He gave me a weekend in

July or he said the end of June weekend is still perfect because we will be

the only ones doing a Christening.

I called MIL and told her this. She was very upset and said then we should

just let the other pastor chirsten the baby on the weekend she chose. I told

her no. I'm tired of her pushing me around (this isn't the first time I try to

do something nice and she pushes me around to get me to do the nice

thing her way). And I already pushed back the chirtening of my child 2

months for them. The pastor I chose, whose church I am in won't be able to

accommodate me on her chosen dates so I'm keeping with my original end

of June date. She's welcome to come or not because she'll be in the

country by then hopefully. I also told her if this was a situation of the

airport still being closed j actually would've pushed it but it seems she's

being selfish and wanting it to be on her birthday is also sus.

I'm being called unreasonable and un-Christian. And a right a__hole. But

I've been accomadating to this woman and catering to her needs for a

while. I've also told my family that wants to be there and some of her

family about the changed date and everyone RSVP'd yes. They're excited. It

falls right in the school holidays and over a long weekend here so a lot of

people will be able to show up.

Important family moments often become complicated when love, tradition, and expectations all collide.

Many people want to make everyone feel included, especially when it involves a child’s milestone.

However, trying to keep everyone happy can sometimes lead to one person carrying the entire emotional burden of making adjustments.

In OP’s situation, the christening is not just an event on a calendar.

It represents a meaningful religious and family moment for her child.

From the beginning, OP tried to include her in-laws by moving the date so they could attend.

She contacted the pastor, changed plans, and made accommodations because she valued their presence.

The frustration seems to come from feeling that her efforts were not being recognized, and that the responsibility for making the event work was repeatedly placed on her.

A different perspective is that MIL may not see her requests as unreasonable because she might be focusing on her own desire to share this special moment with her grandchild.

Coming from another country during a difficult travel situation is stressful, and she may feel that celebrating around her birthday would make the visit more meaningful.

However, good intentions do not automatically make repeated changes fair.

Family involvement should be a contribution, not a demand that the parents constantly reorganize their plans.

This idea applies to OP because her decision was not about excluding her in-laws.

In fact, her previous actions show the opposite. She wanted them present and made significant efforts to make that possible.

The problem arose when flexibility became expected rather than appreciated.

A parent’s responsibility is ultimately to make decisions for their child based on what works for their family, not to endlessly adjust around every relative’s preference.

The accusation that OP is being “un-Christian” also reflects a common misunderstanding about kindness.

Being considerate does not mean accepting every request.

Compassion without boundaries can eventually turn into frustration and resentment, which does not benefit anyone involved.

OP can still leave the door open by welcoming MIL if she is able to attend, while calmly maintaining the chosen date.

The christening is about celebrating the child, the parents’ faith, and the community surrounding them.

It does not need to become a test of whether OP can satisfy every family member.

Sometimes the most loving choice is recognizing that including someone does not mean allowing them to control the occasion.

A healthy family celebrates together because they want to share the moment, not because one person had to give up their own voice to make it happen.

Here’s how people reacted to the post:

These commenters supported OP setting boundaries and emphasized that the child’s event should be decided by the parents

Fabulous_Coast_8108 − You control your life not m. i. l Once she learns this

you will be happy

witchymoon69 − It's your child and you christen your son when you want

not when mil wants

Alarming-Cheetah-144 − You stick to your plans and don’t let MIL convince

you otherwise because if anyone is being unreasonable, it’s her! She’s the

one being selfish and entitled and at the expense of everyone else too.

These commenters believed OP’s spouse should handle communication with his mother and take responsibility for setting limits

CuriousBingo − How does your spouse fit into this scene? Let them

communicate to their mother the hard news, and point out there are many

other considerations. NTA.

Specific_Will8648 − Why are you having these conversations with your

mother-in-law? Your husband should be taking the lead on this and setting

the boundaries with HIS mom. His family, his problem. Your family, your

problem. Not having your husband as a buffer between you and your

mother-in-law: BIG PROBLEM.

FearlessBanana81 − Why isn't your husband dealing with his mother? He

should be the one shouldering this and telling her no.

These commenters agreed OP had already made enough accommodations and should stop changing plans around MIL’s demands

Aspen9999 − NTA you changed the date and tried to accommodate MIL.

But she now lives in another country and is going to miss out on things and

that’s just the way it is. Maybe, if you can afford it, get a videographer to

video it for you and stream it.

FlaxFox − NTA - You've attempted to accomodate her. This is supposed to

be a day for your child. It's great if she can come, but she can't hold the

event hostage. Speaking as someone who deals with a similar relationship,

setting firm boundaries is very important. Don't talk about it in any

personal terms or bring up the past. Just stand strong on what you need.

Antique-diva − If MIL wants to see her sister rather than attend her

grandchild's christening, that's her choice. Keep your boundaries with her

and stop trying to move celebrations for her sake. The first move was kinda

okay, although even that was unnecessary, but you calling the pastor about

August was doormat territory. Stop being her doormat.

From now on, you decide when you plan celebrations for your child. You

can then send an invitation to MIL but stop asking her what suits her. If she

tries to b__t in, just tell her that everything is booked and she is welcome

to come if she can. Period. You don't need to accommodate this witch.

These commenters warned that repeatedly adjusting plans would teach MIL she can control family decisions

Techsupportvictim − You already changed it once for MIL, don’t do it again.

Otherwise she’s going to get the idea that she’s the boss of your life,

especially to accommodate nonsense like “I want to see my sister st at time

that I already asked to be when my grandson is christened”.

And if you changed it to her birthday suddenly she’d likely try to make it all

about her

Brilliant-Bother-503 − Keep the christening to the date scheduled. You

can't keep changing things because of your MIL's schedule. Stop getting

into discussions with her about this. Let your husband deal with his mother.

Jesiplayssims − Mil has made her priorities clear. Stop managing your

schedule around her (not just now, but from now on)

OP planned the christening around her in-laws’ availability, changing the date multiple times to include them in an important moment for her baby.

After already moving the event twice, she finally reached a point where she had to prioritize the church schedule, her guests, and her own family’s plans.

While wanting a birthday christening may have been meaningful to MIL, many felt the decision had become more about accommodating one person than celebrating the child.

Do you think OP was right to hold her boundary, or should she have made one more compromise for family harmony? Share your thoughts below!
