Man Refuses To Let His Divorced Mom Move In After Her Last “Two-Week” Stay Lasted Four Months

Helping a parent through a difficult time can feel like the right thing to do, especially after a painful divorce. But support does not always have to mean opening your home, particularly when past experience suggests that a temporary arrangement may become something much harder to undo.

A 30-year-old man found himself in that exact position after his mother announced that she planned to stay with him and his fiancée while she “regrouped.” What she described as a few months immediately brought back memories of an earlier stay that lasted far longer than promised and damaged several relationships.

He offered other forms of help, but his mother saw the refusal as betrayal. Now, with guilt, religious pressure, and his future marriage all tangled together, he is wondering whether protecting his home makes him cruel. Scroll down to see what Reddit thought.

A man refuses to let his divorced mother move in, fearing old conflicts will return

'AITH for telling my mom she can’t move in with us even “for a little while” after she got divorced?'

I’m (M, 30) and my fiancée (F, 29) and I bought a small house last year.

We’re not rich, it’s just a basic place with a tiny yard, but it felt like we finally got our footing.

My mom (F, 56) recently finalized her divorce from my stepdad.

It was ugly, lots of crying phone calls, lots of “I gave him my best years.”

I tried to be supportive without getting pulled into the middle,

because she has a history of turning every crisis into a permanent situation.

She’s very religious, very “family is everything,” and also very good at making her wants sound like moral obligations.

Last week she called me and said she can’t afford her apartment anymore because the rent went up and she “needs to regroup.”

Then she hit me with the line I knew was coming: “I’ll just stay with you two for a bit, until I’m stable.”

She said it like it was already decided. I asked what “a bit” means.

She said, “Oh, don’t be dramatic, just a few months.” I asked where she’d sleep.

She said the guest room, and then started talking about what furniture she’d bring, like she was planning a move in day.

I told her we can help her look for a smaller place or a roommate situation with a friend from her church.

She got quiet and said, “I’m your mother. I shouldn’t have to beg.”

Here’s the context that makes me feel both guilty and also 100% sure.

When I was 22 I let her stay with me after she had a fight with a boyfriend. It was supposed to be two weeks.

It became four months. She criticized my cooking, my cleaning, my friends,

and she kept leaving little devotional books on my desk like passive aggressive landmines.

She also had this habit of “just asking questions” that were really accusations.

“Why does your girlfriend dress like that.” “Do you think you’ll ever be a real man if you let a woman run your home.”

When I finally told her she had to go, she cried and told the whole family I kicked her out. My aunt didn’t talk to me for a year.

So yeah, I’m not doing that again, especially not now that I’m building a life with someone I actually want peace with.

My fiancée is kind, but she’s a fixer.

When my mom called her directly after I said no, my fiancée listened and then told me, “Maybe we can do a strict timeline, it’s your mom.”

I said no, because timelines don’t work with my mother. She treats them like suggestions and then you’re the villain when you enforce them.

My mom then started texting me bible verses about honoring your parents.

One message literally said “A good son would not let his mother struggle.” That one made me see red.

I replied that I’m not abandoning her, I’m saying she can’t live with us, and I’ll help in other ways.

She responded, “So your wife comes first now.” I said yes, because that’s the point of getting married.

She told me I’m choosing a woman over family and that she “prayed I would never turn out like this.”

Now my fiancée feels caught in the middle, and she’s worried I’m being too harsh because my mom is “going through it.”

I feel like I’m being forced to choose between my future marriage and a person who will happily swallow my whole life if I let her.

AITH for holding this boundary even if it makes my mom’s situation harder in the short term?

Sometimes saying no to a struggling parent feels cruel, even when saying yes would reopen wounds that took years to heal. Family obligation can make reasonable limits feel like abandonment, especially when guilt, religion, and past sacrifices are invoked.

In this situation, the OP is not refusing to care about his mother after her divorce. He is refusing to let her crisis take control of the home and relationship he is building with his fiancée.

The central conflict involves compassion competing with self-protection. His mother is grieving a marriage, facing financial instability, and likely frightened about starting over at 56. Wanting support from her son is understandable.

However, she did not ask whether moving in would work; she presented it as an established plan. That distinction matters. The OP’s previous experience taught him that temporary arrangements with her can become indefinite, intrusive, and emotionally costly. His resistance is therefore based on evidence rather than imagination.

Meanwhile, his fiancée’s instinct to help comes from kindness, but she has not lived through the consequences that make him distrust promises about strict timelines.

A different perspective is that the mother’s accusation, “So your wife comes first now”, may reveal the real emotional struggle. Divorce has disrupted her place in one relationship, and she may now fear losing importance in her son’s life as well.

Moving into his home could provide more than affordable housing; it might restore a sense of influence, belonging, and security. Yet her fear does not create an obligation for him to surrender authority over his household.

Choosing his future spouse first is not necessarily rejecting his mother. It is part of forming a separate adult family.

Psychologist Margaret Rutherford describes parental enmeshment as a pattern in which boundaries between parent and child become unclear, leaving the adult child feeling responsible for meeting the parent’s emotional needs.

She notes that independence may then trigger guilt because the child has learned that protecting personal space causes distress or disapproval.

Similarly, therapist Maggie Stiefvater explains through the Gottman Institute that boundaries identify one’s own limits, whereas attempts to control another person’s choices function differently.

That insight explains why the OP feels guilty despite being certain. His mother’s distress is genuine, but her messages transform assistance into a moral test: a good son must provide the exact help she wants. He has already offered alternatives, which shows concern without granting unlimited access.

The realistic solution is to keep housing off the table while offering specific, sustainable assistance, such as helping with applications, moving costs, or a short-term budget. His fiancée should support one unified decision before responding further.

A boundary previously ignored requires consistency, not another trial period. Protecting their home now may prevent far deeper resentment later.

Here’s the comments of Reddit users:

These Redditors urged OP to stand firm and stop the mother from moving in again

IntrepidMuch − You need to tell your SO very clearly that she needs to step back and let you handle your mom.

Make sure that you tell your SO that you love that side of her but that she needs to let you run point on this.

You will take all the emotional hits, and all the guilt, but your SO needs to trust you on this one.

Then, definitely hold your line against mom and any supporting family. You get to preserve your peace OP, in fact, you must.

MaeLee1990 − Nta tell your wife it is a firm no. You didn’t before and you won’t do it again you have your reasons and she needs to respect that.

I am a people pleaser and “fixer” and I only quit when I got with my old man now who doesn’t let people run me over anymore and shows me...

eyesbetterblknd − Not at all. She needs to be reminded, it didn't work last time, it won't work this time. Don't give in. Stand your ground!

These commenters stressed that OP’s spouse is now the family member who should come first

FeeHistorical9367 − Choosing your wife over family? Your wife is family and she's the first family member that you need to be choosing!

dead_Competition5196 − Tell her the Bible in Matthew 19:4-6 says that in marriage, a man is to leave his father and mother.

Do not take her in. You know what to expect. She's an adult. She can handle it. There are other options for her.

These users advised trusting past experience and making the mother handle her own responsibilities

Paranoidbell − Trust your instincts and do not let her move in

Morriganx3 − Your mother is selfish and manipulative asf. Do not give her any ground.

A mother’s job is to care for her child, not the other way round.

Ok_Rush_2800 − You know you’re right.

Help her through but remember your two young people with your whole life ahead of you. She needs to be responsible for herself

These commenters questioned the marriage or even whether the post itself was genuine

Stock-Cell1556 − So she's all "family first" and she's been divorced twice? Tell her you want a divorce.

Rubywantsin − Karma farming? 3 subreddits at the same time. 9 day old account

Should he hold the line, or offer one carefully documented trial period? Is his fiancée being compassionate, or underestimating the history? Share your verdict below.
