Man Cheated On One College Paper, Then His $2,000 Mistake Returned At Work

A bad decision from years ago can feel safely buried until someone finds a way to drag it back into the present. Regret is difficult enough on its own, but fear becomes much heavier when another person turns that mistake into leverage.

One former college student is now facing the consequences of paying someone to write a history paper more than a decade ago. The service blackmailed him once before, and after years of silence, they have resurfaced with his work email and messages sent to both his employer and former university.

He knows what he did was wrong, yet paying again could trap him in the same cycle forever. Now, he is torn between confessing, ignoring the threats, or risking everything he has built. Scroll down to see what advice Reddit gave him.

A professional faces blackmail at work over a college paper he secretly paid for years ago

'I cheated on a history paper in college and now the service I paid for is trying to blackmail me at my job'

In college, I paid for a history paper to be written for me and paid paper writing service to do it for me.

They blackmailed me once already while I was in college and I paid them.

They then tried to do it again for the last few years, and I kept ignoring them and deleted my old email address.

10 years later, they now have somehow found out my work email address and emailed me there again

and sent a vague email to our HR VP and another email to my old college's provost.

Basically, they want money from me again; they did not indicate how much. Last time they got maybe $1-2k from me.

My company is very large (100k+ employees) so there is a good chance my HR VP will just ignore the initial email.

I also think that if the blackmailer does follow up on his threats then he loses some of his leverage.

I know what I did was wrong, and I can try to justify it but that isn't really relevant to a resolution anymore.

The course was a general ed class, I took it pass/fail. It had no relevance to the actual major I pursued.

However, to play devil's advocate, if there is evidence that I did this once (I only did this once),

then why would someone believe me when I say I never did this for my actual major coursework.

I am unsure what to do at this point. Do I come clean and admit that I paid for a paper in college and deal with the university directly?

Do I reach out to my HR VP as well? Do I ignore it, do I pay the blackmail over and over again? I am really scared,

I spent the last 12 years working diligently at work to build a strong reputation and I don't want my past stupid decision to ruin everything.

A single dishonest decision can cast a long shadow, especially when someone else discovers that shame can be turned into leverage.

The OP knows paying for the college paper was wrong, but ten years of responsible work do not disappear because of one past failure. What he is facing now is no longer academic misconduct alone. It is repeated coercion designed to keep him frightened, isolated, and willing to pay.

The emotional struggle centers on shame, uncertainty, and catastrophic thinking. The blackmailer does not need to prove that the OP cheated throughout college; they only need him to imagine every possible consequence.

That fear makes silence and payment feel safer than exposure. His earlier payment probably provided temporary relief, but it also taught the sender that pressure could produce money.

Now, each message threatens not merely his job but the identity he has built as a diligent professional. His remorse is genuine, yet guilt has become tangled with the belief that he deserves endless punishment.

A different perspective is that accountability and victimhood can coexist. The OP was responsible for cheating, while the writing service is responsible for exploiting that misconduct.

Admitting one does not excuse the other. Paying again would not erase the evidence or purchase permanent silence; it would simply leave the blackmailer able to return with another demand. The sender’s leverage depends heavily on keeping the OP reactive and alone.

Psychologist Miguel F. Pérez-Rojas explains that chronic extortion can normalize fear, narrow attention, and damage a person’s sense of autonomy. Under repeated coercion, victims may organize daily choices around preventing the next threat rather than evaluating their options calmly.

Silence may therefore reflect survival and fear, not weakness. FBI guidance similarly advises people receiving blackmail or intimidation threats to preserve electronic evidence rather than deleting messages, because communications, account information, and related records may assist an investigation.

This insight explains why the OP feels tempted to pay despite knowing the demands may continue. Shame tells him that seeking protection will expose him, while fear insists immediate payment will restore safety. Neither emotion is offering a reliable long-term strategy.

The old wrongdoing should be addressed deliberately, not under instructions from someone profiting from his panic.

The most realistic response is to stop paying, preserve every email and payment record, secure his accounts, and privately consult an attorney experienced in employment, education, and cyber-extortion matters before contacting his employer or university.

He can also report the threats through appropriate law-enforcement channels; the Department of Justice maintains guidance for submitting crime reports.

Whether proactive disclosure is wise depends on the evidence, workplace policies, university rules, and applicable time limits, so legal advice should come before an emotional confession. He made one serious mistake. That does not give another person permanent ownership of his future.

Here’s how people reacted to the post:

These Redditors believed the message was a blackmail attempt and advised ignoring it without sending any money

Delta9THICC − Id ignore it honestly. Thats a lame blackmail attempt.

rose442 − Ignore. Also if they are direct, say…. . I’ve never even heard of \_\_\_\_\_\_\_. It’s gonna go away.

Dragon_slayer1994 − Never pay a black mailer because they'll keep coming back for more.

Internet_Energy_Vamp − Never heard of them and it looks AI generated. 100% phishing and blackmail. Deny, deflect, attack

winch-rage-8888 − They're probably hitting you up again bc you're the only person who has ever given them money

These commenters doubted an employer would care about a college history paper from more than a decade ago

SouthernMud7225 − Your job doesn’t care about a history paper in college

mehbutwhy − Considering this is blackmail for something over a decade ago, I’d ignore it.

If someone asks, feign ignorance. You have no idea who this person is or what they’re on about.

Your work will ignore and block most likely. Who’s going to investigate a good worker for something from their college days?

I doubt the college cares either if you’re a functioning adult in society right now.

These Redditors argued that paying previously likely encouraged the scammer to come back for more money

Norcalmatty − Wow, you are stupid enough to cheat, and then stupid enough to get scammed?

That’s what you should be embarrassed about. They are targeting you because you were stupid the first time.

Sketcha_2000 − Respectfully, you’re probably not important enough at a company with over

100,000 employees for anyone to care that 10 years ago you paid someone to write a history paper.

When you say “last time they got $1-2K from me” do you mean they’ve blackmailed you before and you paid them, or that’s what you paid them to write the...

Either way, you don’t sound too bright.

ConsiderationKey1658 − You paid them $1,000-2,000 last time! ? Bro lol wtf hahaha

Should he alert his employer before the sender escalates, or wait for legal advice first? How much should one college mistake affect an otherwise established career?
