Coworkers Praised His Dramatic Weight Loss, Then He Explained The Devastating Reason Behind It

Weight loss is often treated like an automatic success story. People see a smaller body, offer congratulations, and assume the change came from discipline, exercise, or a healthier routine. But appearances rarely tell the full story.

One healthcare worker experienced this after losing a dramatic amount of weight during lockdown. Friends and acquaintances were quick to say how great they looked and ask for their secret, unaware that the transformation had happened during one of the hardest periods of their life.

Instead of giving the answer people expected, they chose to tell the truth. The reactions were always immediate and uncomfortable. Scroll down to see why a seemingly harmless compliment opened the door to a much darker reality.

'You lost so much weight you look great!'

So i used to be really overweight. I dont know how much exactly but at my heaviest i was probably about 30st.

I gradularly started loosing wieght deliberately but not a huge amout and not that quick.

After maybe 18 months i was down to about 26/27 st, then lockdown happened.

I had a bit of a mental breakdown (work in health care, already have some mental health issues and this just pushed me over the edge)

I basically stopped eating for 6 months (I did still eat but not much, sometimes days inbetween, maybe like a a bicuit or a carrot)

over this time I lost about 9st during this 6 months bringing me down to about 18.

I continued to loose weight but as i was eating more normally again much slower.. Then i get diagnosed as type 2 diabetic, not really important but...

Anyway when restrictions lift and I go out and see people again a lot of people said oh wow you look great you lost so much weight! How did you...

Or something to that effect. I tell them the truth, they always look slight horrified after.... Sorry for formating on mobile

Sometimes the most painful compliments are the ones that praise the visible result while completely missing the suffering behind it. People often treat weight loss as automatic evidence of discipline, health, or happiness.

For the OP, however, the dramatic change in appearance came during a mental health crisis in which eating became difficult and daily survival was already overwhelming.

The emotional tension comes from the gap between what others saw and what the OP experienced. Friends and acquaintances saw a smaller body and assumed improvement. The OP remembered days without proper food, psychological distress, and the strain of working in healthcare during lockdown.

Telling the truth may have shocked people, but it also exposed how casually society connects thinness with wellness. Their compliments were probably intended kindly, yet they placed the OP in the uncomfortable position of either accepting praise for being unwell or revealing painful personal details to correct the assumption.

A fresh perspective is that the horrified reactions may say more about social conditioning than individual cruelty. Many people have learned that noticing weight loss is polite and affirming, especially when the person was previously larger. They may never consider that weight can change because of grief, illness, medication, stress, poverty, or disordered eating.

The OP’s honest answer interrupts that familiar script. It forces people to recognize that a body can become socially celebrated while the person living inside it is deteriorating.

Eating-disorder therapist Carolyn Karoll explains that compliments about weight loss can reinforce the belief that thinner bodies are healthier or more valuable. She notes that weight loss may result from illness, emotional distress, grief, or harmful eating behaviors, meaning appearance alone cannot reveal someone’s wellbeing.

Karoll recommends praising qualities such as resilience, humor, creativity, or kindness instead of focusing on body size. The National Eating Disorders Association similarly advises directing compliments toward someone’s character rather than their shape or weight.

That insight explains why “you look great” could feel deeply disconnected from reality. The OP had not discovered a healthy shortcut worth sharing.

Their body had changed during a period of severe restriction and psychological collapse. Hearing admiration for that outcome may unintentionally suggest that the suffering was worthwhile because it produced a more socially acceptable appearance.

The practical lesson is not that people must ignore every visible change. It is that concern should come before evaluation. Saying, “It’s good to see you—how have you been?” leaves room for the person to share what is happening without assigning moral value to their body.

Weight is information, not a complete story. Sometimes the kindest response is to notice the person first and let them decide whether their appearance is open for discussion.

Here’s how people reacted to the post:

These commenters used painful truths to stop intrusive personal questions

gigi79sd − I'm infertile. When people ask me why I don't have children, I always tell them that after half a million dollars in failed IVF and 3 miscarriages, I...

That shuts them up really well.

Royal_Milk − I love when people mention, especially in an insulting way,

me being bald so I can just go "yeah it never really grew back that well after chemo so I kept the bald"

JustZBrie − I lost about 25 lbs after my 19 year old son died. I just wasn't hungry or taking care of myself. I would get the same comments.

I had several ask what I was doing to lose the weight because they wanted to try it. I'd just say I don't think you want to try it.

And when they'd press, I'd just say "I watched them bury my son. " Things would get really awkward.

These Redditors revealed that visible changes came from serious health struggles

Sassy_Spicy − My response was, “yeah, I went into an autistic burnout and couldn’t eat or sleep for months. I don’t recommend trying it. ”

anxiousautistic2342 − This happened to me. Someone said "you look great! " I said "thanks, I've been really depressed"

These users argued that commenting on someone’s weight is invasive, even when framed as praise

yozoragadaisuki − This is why at my previous workplace, we're not allowed to comment on someone's weight loss/gain, ever. Period.

Even if we think they might like it, absolutely not. (It was an anti-harassment policy or something)

justthinkhappy − Oh! This reminds me of a similar story! I wasn’t really trying to lose weight but just limiting my portions bc I have a tendency to binge.

But I ended up losing about 10lbs overall. A guy at work walks up to me with 3 other guys around him and says “Wow you’ve lost a lot of...

Everything’s okay, right!? Like you’re not sick are you! ?” I wish I had a good comeback but I didn’t.

I was going to say “idk might be cancer” but I didn’t want that kind of karma. I don’t think he meant to embarrass me, but he did.

No one should comment on anyone’s weight ever. Especially in front of an audience.

I understand people with good intentions being concerned but it’s just not their business.

If the person wanted to talk about it, you wouldn’t have to ask.

I am guilty of telling people they look good and asking if they have any secrets but trying to be more mindful of putting people “on the spot” like that.

There was woman I worked with who had very aggressive cancer and she didn’t want anyone to know.

She didn’t want sympathy and she didn’t want treatment. She just wanted to continue working and live her life.

Everyone would ask her about her weight constantly. People that didn’t pay attention to her any other time. It had to be a nightmare for her.

She just told everyone she started juicing and running to lose weight but you could tell when she got so frail and grey that there was more happening.

Such a great lady, she trained me when I first started and she had a daughter that was my age 💗

Choosepeace − I dislike people commenting on my weight loss. They think it’s a compliment, but it feels as invasive as commenting on weight gain.

I have been going to the same grocery store for a long time, and an employee there makes a beeline for me to go on and on about my weight...

At first it was ok, but now it feels like harassment.

Why am I having to discuss my body and health with a stranger as I check out at the store?

I’ve started ignoring the comments and questions from this person, and she keeps trying. It’s weird.

These commenters pushed back against people who envy medically driven weight loss

mind_deficient − I have lost 100lbs because my health issues were so bad I had to be put on a semiglutide injection. This has been over the past 2 years.

It has been hell adjusting to my new medication. Everyone tells me they are so jealous I am on a semiglutide and they wish they were on one too.

I tell them that if they get on one, please make sure to stay by your bathroom because you will be puking and pooping. Good luck!

Alternative-Arm-3253 − u/BigRich898 - I always shock people now when they run into me.

I tell them that aside from the gastric bypass that I had back in 2001, this past March I almost died and that in itself traumatizes the person enough.

(I see their reactions on their faces as they're expecting the more rational explanation of how I lost lbs).Coma = loosing weight fast. ..

Was the Redditor right to answer with the uncomfortable truth? Should weight-loss compliments disappear entirely, or can they be appropriate when someone has openly discussed their goals? Share your perspective below.
