Woman Asks to Shower Before Her First Time, Then Her “Dream Guy” Reveals Why He Hates the Idea

in Social Issues

Early relationships can feel exciting, especially when someone seems kind, attractive, and almost too perfect.

But a person’s reaction to a simple boundary can reveal more than weeks of charming behavior ever could.

The original poster (OP) had recently started dating a man she considered her dream partner when their first intimate moment took an uncomfortable turn.

Feeling self-conscious after a hot day, she asked to take a quick shower before going further.

Although he initially checked whether she was comfortable, he became irritated when she repeated the request and refused to let him join her.

The evening ended awkwardly, and he later stopped responding to her messages.

With little dating experience, OP began questioning whether her request had been unreasonable.

Read on to see what the situation eventually revealed about him.

Woman Asks to Shower Before Her First Time, Then Her “Dream Guy” Reveals Why He Hates the Idea
not the actual photo

'AITAH for taking a shower before having s__ for the first time?'

I (24F) have been talking to essentially my dream guy for the past few

weeks and we've become bf/gf 3 weeks ago. He's handsome, perfect, and

treats me really well, up until what happened yesterday. This was my first

time going back to his place after a dinner date, and making out on from

the doorway to his couch, then as it got really steamy, his hands began

exploring under my clothes and I froze. I knew where this was going, and

he was so respectful, immediately pausing and asking if I was comfortable proceeding.

Then, I blurted out, "Can I please take a shower first? It was really hot today

and I smell sweaty," and he pulled back as if I smacked him. He was

confused and said something along the lines of "You smell fine, don't

shower, stay. If you take a shower, you'll ruin the mood."

But I felt really self conscious at the moment (he knows I'm a virgin with no

dating experience), and insisted on taking a quick shower, but he kept

insisting that it'll ruin the vibe and he was slowly getting turned off. Then,

he asked "Well can I join?" And I didn't want his first time seeing my body in

some unflattering bathroom lighting, so I rejected him and said "It'll just be

five minutes, I want to get clean for you," and he was really annoyed and

bummed out. The first time he's ever been this impatient and aggravated

with me.

He then said "Well what am I going to do? Just sit here and wait? That's

weird. Are you implying I stink??"

I told him, "A bit? But it's mainly because I just want to freshen up for you."

By the end of the night, we both lost the mood for it. I think he saw how I

was on the verge of tears (I'm bad at confrontation), and offered to just

cuddle and watch a movie on the couch, but the entire time, I could feel

like he was simmering in irritation and anger. He called me an uber back to

my apartment, and I tried calling and apologizing over text, but he's been

ignoring my messages (he usually responds in .032 seconds).

I felt like such an a\*shole because was my delivery off? I didn't mean to

make him feel stinky, I just personally felt stinky as well. Was my request

normal? Do couples usually shower before their first time together? I have

no idea how the process works...

For preface: I am a virgin who's never really dated because of toxic, strict

parents that I went no contact with, and a lot of my peers also never dated,

so I don't really know how a healthy relationship looks like.

7/20 Update: Thank you so much to all of the warm and welcoming

messages from everyone on here! I wasn't able to reply to all of them, but I

really really appreciate everyone's friendly and amazing advice, and have

taken it all into heart. I had written this initial reddit message at night time

in a panic after an entire day of being ghosted by my ex. Yes, you heard it

right, we broke up. Just yesterday, he finally reached out to me to talk at

his place (I turned that down) and decided on a local cafe. He expressed

that when I insisted on showering, I made him sound like he was dirty which

turned him on even more (?!?!) so he wanted to get it done on the spot.

Some of you guessed it, this man DOES have a dirty and smell kink which is

why he was so offended I would want to shower (I didn't even know that

kink existed). I expressed how hurt I was from this entire ordeal, I didn't

feel comfortable and loved, and he attempted to apologize again and again

the same way he made me, but everyone on reddit is right. This dude is

NOT my dream man. He's a red flag. I told him his sorrys doesn't mean

anything because he had ghosted me for so long, it gave me enough clarity.

Then, he suddenly blew up on me, callign me unattractive in the first place,

he only wanted to hook up, and I was just a pity date (lol ok buddy). It had

gotten so heated, the cafe manager came over to ask if everything was

okay because his voice was growing loud. The manager was super sweet

and helped escort me back to my car. Needless to say, I've blocked him and

that is the end of it. Thank you again for everyone's support, your advice

during this difficult time really made me see him for the boy he is, and

defintiely not someone I want to lose my first too. I much appreciate this

wonderful community <3

A first sexual experience should never feel like a test someone can fail by needing five minutes to feel comfortable.

Intimacy depends on both people feeling safe, respected, and free to pause without fearing anger or punishment.

OP’s request to shower was ordinary.

The troubling part was not that the evening lost momentum, but that her boyfriend treated her comfort as an inconvenience.

At first, he did something appropriate: he noticed that she froze and asked whether she wanted to continue.

However, respect for consent cannot end once the answer becomes inconvenient.

OP did not reject him or insult his body. She asked for a brief break because she felt sweaty and self-conscious.

Rather than accepting that boundary, he repeatedly argued, proposed joining her after she declined, complained that waiting would be strange, and focused on how her choice affected his arousal.

Planned Parenthood explains that people have the right to refuse any sexual activity and that partners should communicate their boundaries, preferences, and comfort levels.

Pressuring someone after they express hesitation is a sign of an unhealthy dynamic, even when the pressure is framed as disappointment rather than a direct threat.

That guidance matters because consent is not merely the absence of a firm “no.”

It should be voluntary, ongoing, and free from emotional consequences designed to change the answer.

OP was inexperienced, anxious, and close to tears.

A caring partner would have reassured her, offered a towel or shower, and allowed the evening to continue or not continue without resentment.

The later revelation about his smell-related kink explains his reaction but does not excuse it.

He was entitled to have a preference. He was not entitled to involve OP in that preference without discussing it or obtaining her informed agreement.

His claim that her desire to shower increased his arousal makes his persistence more concerning because he was prioritizing a private fantasy over her clearly stated discomfort.

His conduct after the date revealed even more.

He ignored her long enough for her to panic and repeatedly apologize, then insulted her when she ended the relationship.

Saying she was unattractive and merely a “pity date” was likely an attempt to regain control after rejection.

It contradicted his previous behavior and confirmed that his kindness depended on her compliance.

OP did not ruin a special moment.

She learned, before becoming more vulnerable, how he responds when a woman’s boundaries interrupt what he wants.

That information was painful but valuable.

There is no universal rule about showering before sex.

Some couples do, some do not, and either person can request it.

The correct process is whatever allows everyone involved to feel comfortable and enthusiastic.

Her first time should be with someone who treats a pause as normal, not someone who makes her cry for having one.

Losing this relationship was not losing her dream man. It was discovering that the dream disappeared the moment she exercised her right to choose.

Let’s dive into the reactions:

These commenters rejected the idea that he was OP’s dream guy and viewed him as a poor partner

skeleskank − He is not your dream guy.

Vanwanar − He is an a__hole. I didn't read anything that would tell me he is

a "dream guy"

StrangerHighways − Dream another dream, girl! He's not it.

IHaveABigDuvet − Yeah stop calling him your dream guy because he sounds

like a nightmare.

These commenters urged OP not to make him part of her first sexual experience after his immature reaction

Lowered-ex − You cannot absolutely please do not give this man your

virginity. A normal person would just say “ok” and then light a candle or

something and wait. He sounds like a 2 year old.

GoodAd5282 − It gave me the ick as soon as he got pushy about not

showering. Everyone has their preference about hygiene and if you felt

uncomfortable there is no reason not to take a quick shower! Asking, “well

what am I going to do, just sit here and wait? ” Is ridiculous! Yes! That’s

exactly what you’re supposed to do!

He does not sound like someone you want to have the memory of your first

time with tied to for the rest of your life. He sounds like a pushy jerk. NTA

Mord_Proxy − You made a completely normal request AND dodged a

bullet. If he couldn't wait five minutes for you to feel confident, then he

wasn't going to put much effort into make your first time pleasurable. Side

note: I get sweaty and will sometimes hop in the shower or wipe myself

down before getting intimate.

Maybe you can carry deodorant wipes for future outings (s__ual or not)?

These commenters said the real issue was his refusal to respect OP’s bodily autonomy, comfort, and consent

Coffee_bean8 − This is not about the shower, this is a man throwing a

tantrum because you denied him access to your body, even temporarily.

He’s showed his cards and it will only get worse imo. Remember that you

are in charge of your body and what happens to it, if someone cannot

respect that most basic baseline consent, you should not sleep with them.

Let this one go and find someone more respectful.

Electrical_Win6986 − Ya no the a__hole. Your needs, wants and

comfortability should be respected, even if it’s not his preference. If

waiting 5-10 minutes is “a mood k__ler”, bro is weird lol. I would say this is

him showing his cards early, take it and move on. Don’t want to be with

someone who doesn’t value you.

wolf63rs − Red flag, crises averted. Your boyfriend is a child not a man. A

man will want you to be comfortable even if it means waiting a few

minutes. A man will not react in this childish manner.

OP went into the situation feeling nervous and vulnerable, hoping to share an intimate first experience with someone she trusted.

Instead, a simple request to shower became a moment where she felt pressured and blamed for expressing a basic comfort need.

While the misunderstanding may have started from insecurity and poor communication, his reaction revealed a much bigger issue about boundaries and respect.

Do you think OP was wrong for wanting to feel comfortable before intimacy, or was his response the real warning sign?

How would you handle a partner reacting this way during a vulnerable moment? Share your thoughts below!
