He Called Off His Wedding a Month Before the Big Day After His Fiancée Chose Her Mom Over Their Future

in Social Issues

A wedding was only about a month away when a man realized he was not just marrying his fiancée. He was potentially signing up to become his future mother-in-law’s permanent roommate.

That was not the future he had agreed to.

The couple had been preparing to get married, and he already had a plan for their finances. He owned a townhouse that he intended to rent out, and the two of them would eventually save for a larger home where they could build their life together.

There was just one problem.

His fiancée insisted that her 68-year-old mother would be living with them.

The arrangement had originally been presented as temporary. But the more he looked at the circumstances, the less temporary it seemed.

And eventually, he realized he had to make a choice before the wedding.

The “Temporary” Arrangement Was Already Taking Shape

The mother had been facing eviction along with her youngest son. The family decided that she would move in with the man’s fiancée.

There was a delay with the fiancée’s home closing, so the mother temporarily stayed with the couple’s eldest sister.

But apparently, the sister was not interested in keeping that arrangement for long.

She worked with the other siblings to transfer their mother’s part-time retail job closer to the fiancée’s home. Then, once everything was arranged, the mother was dropped off with her daughter.

The man found the whole situation concerning, particularly because the mother was nearly 70 and still working part-time while reportedly sending her income to her youngest son.

That son was living with the mother of his youngest child.

In other words, the man could not see a realistic financial plan for his future mother-in-law to move out.

She was supposed to be saving money to eventually get her own place, according to his fiancée.

But how much could she realistically save while working part-time and giving her money away?

That question became increasingly difficult to ignore.

He Finally Asked the Question That Changed Everything

As the wedding approached, the man started raising his concerns.

He was not opposed to helping family occasionally. He simply did not want to begin his marriage with another adult permanently dependent on their household.

He pointed out that his fiancée had four other siblings. Surely, he thought, responsibility for their mother did not have to fall entirely on one daughter.

His fiancée disagreed.

She insisted that her mother needed to stay with them.

The man eventually became convinced that the rest of the family had effectively handed his fiancée a responsibility she would never be able to escape.

In his mind, the word “temporary” was doing a lot of work.

He believed the reality would be very different.

His fiancée would provide housing. Her mother would avoid rent and most household expenses. Her income would continue going elsewhere. And years could pass before anyone seriously revisited the arrangement.

So, about a month before the wedding, he drew a line.

He told his fiancée that he could not marry her if her mother was going to live with them.

It was not an easy choice.

She chose her mother.

He chose to leave.

As he put it, he decided to “exit stage left.”

Suddenly, Everyone Wanted Him to Change His Mind

Once the engagement ended, his phone apparently became extremely busy.

He said he was receiving around 50 calls a day from people asking him to reconsider.

But his mind was made up.

He did not hate his fiancée, and he understood that she might feel responsible for her mother. He simply knew that he did not want to spend his married life sharing a home with someone who had never been part of the future he imagined.

The question was whether walking away so close to the wedding was selfish.

Reddit did not seem to think so.

Why Saying “No” Before Marriage Can Be Better Than Resenting Someone Afterward

Family obligations can become especially complicated when one person quietly becomes the family’s default caretaker.

A person may genuinely love their parent while still being unable or unwilling to make that parent part of their household indefinitely. Those two feelings can exist at the same time.

That is what makes this situation so difficult.

The fiancée may have felt that choosing her mother was the only decent thing to do. But the man also had the right to decide what kind of marriage he was willing to enter.

He was not obligated to accept a living arrangement simply because the wedding was already planned.

In fact, recognizing the incompatibility before marriage may have prevented years of resentment.

The problem was not necessarily that her mother needed help.

The problem was that the couple could not agree on what that help would look like, how long it would last, or who would ultimately be responsible for it.

Those are enormous questions to leave unanswered before saying “I do.”

Here's the feedback from the Reddit community:

Many commenters told him that he had made the right decision.

crazycatlady-7384 − My mother had a plan, from the time I was a teen, that she was going to leave my father and move in with one of her adult kids...

I was told I should stay single or only marry a man who accepted that she was going to leave me with me. I did marry, have a child, etc.

For years, my mother was quiet about living with me.

She'd bring it up in passing and I'd remind her that I didn't have extra room, I have indoor cats that she was not OK with, she was a heavy...

(hubby has bad asthma & cigarette smoke is one of his major triggers) who insisted that she be allowed to smoke indoors whenever she felt like it, etc.

I did not allow her over very often for visits because she was so adamant that smoking was no big deal and how dare anyone deny her the ability to...

A few years ago, I showed my mother the floor plan for the house hubby & I wanted to build on some land my father has.

Her first reaction was "Which bedroom is mine? ". I asked her why she would need her own bedroom in MY house since I would be living a quarter mile...

She brought up that whole, "when I leave your father I'm moving in with you" idea(my parents had been married for 49 years at that point).

I asked her if she was giving up cigarettes because I could not have a smoker around my husband nor did I want to go back to getting bronchitis several...

She made all kinds of excuses to why she couldn't quit smoking(my favorite was that she'd give up cigarettes when my father gave up booze). I was adamant that she...

I told her that hubby's health was more important than this fantasy she had about leaving my father and living carefree with me. I had my hubby's back.

Quiet_Plant6667 − Women in this sub who have the same problems with your MILs—take heed. Just do it.

omegatryX − Your poor Ex was the s__pegoat kid that everyone else just went “eh, fk it, she’s your problem now” to, and dumped ol’ granny on her. You had...

You didn’t want to be lumped with someone whose clearly using her (would be both of you then) and it was such a huge dealbreaker for your ex that she...

Ultimatums suck but unfortunately, they sometimes need to be made. Good job.

Another commenter described the ex-fiancée as the family scapegoat, suggesting that her siblings had simply decided that their mother was now her problem.

Figuringoutcrafting − Theater nerd here. One of my favorite stage directions from Shakespeare is “exit stage left as if chased by a bear”. I do believe this fits lovely there.

IYFS88 − I understand how she may feel that she needed to pick her mom and I don’t envy her position of needing to figure this all out. But you...

Top_Strawberry2348 − Stick with this, OP. It’s an impossible situation, starting your future with MIL being dependent because her money is going to BIL.

ButterflyDestiny − Thank goodness! SOMEBODY WITH SENSE!

TinyCoconut98 − I would have done the same damn thing. F__k that noise. You’re not that woman’s retirement home or plan. Let your ex have fun carting mom around for...

Glammkitty − My MIL wishes my hubs proposed to her and despises me. I would leave if he tried to move her in. You start your own family, not join...

Several people agreed that an ultimatum is usually ugly, but sometimes a clear boundary is necessary when two people fundamentally disagree about marriage.

Serafirelily − You made the right decision. Her mom was never going to move out and she would have eventually destroyed your marriage. Your ex will probably remain single the...

Breaking off an engagement one month before the wedding sounds brutal.

But sometimes the crueler choice is going through with the wedding while secretly hoping the other person will change afterward.

He knew what his fiancée wanted. She knew what he wanted. Neither was willing to compromise.

She chose her mother.

He chose the life he wanted to build.

There is no guarantee either of them will feel good about the decision forever. But walking away before marriage is far easier than walking away after years of resentment, arguments, and financial pressure.

Sometimes the most responsible thing you can do before a wedding is admit that you should not have one.

Was he right to end the engagement, or should he have found a compromise with his fiancée about her mother’s living situation?
