Woman Gets Expired Shampoo for Secret Santa, Then Learns Her Coworker Misunderstood the Entire Game

in Social Issues

Secret Santa exchanges are supposed to be lighthearted, but a disappointing gift can quickly make someone question whether a coworker was careless, insulting, or simply trying to get rid of unwanted items.

Without knowing who chose the present, it can be easy to assume the worst.

The original poster (OP) joined a voluntary workplace exchange with a $20 limit and carefully bought snacks her assigned coworker had listed as favorites.

In return, she received shampoo and deodorant she could not use because of allergies and specific hair needs.

Believing the items may have been old products taken from someone’s cabinet, OP considered leaving them at the front desk with a “free to take” note.

However, new information soon revealed that the strange gift may not have been as thoughtless as it first appeared.

Read on to see how the misunderstanding unfolded.

'Wibta if I left my secret Santa gift that I recieved at the front desk with a note that says free?'

I (26 f) signed up for secret Santa at work. This meaning it was voluntary. I work at a daycare

with all women. Im a float at work whoch means I go to which ever class room im needed in,

so ive worked with every teacher and as far as I know, dont have any issues with anyone.

The secret Santa had a 20$ limit and we all filled out sheets of our interests, things like our

favorite scents and snacks and hobbies etc. I gifted my person a 6 pack of her favorite soda

and all 3 of her favorite snacks.

I recieved a bottle of shampoo and unscented deodorant. I looked up the products to see if

there was something special about them, I guess the deodorant is decent, but the shampoo

is no longer in production or sold. From what ive deducted, it was items she had sitting in her

cabinet that she no longer wanted.

I could understand if it weren't voluntary, but sje knew what she signed up for and put no

effort into it. Im not even sure which coworker it was because we never revealed our people.

Nor do I want to know.

I dont want the items, I cant use them because I have allergies and dandruff and have to use

specific products. So wibta if I left them at the front desk at work with a not that says "free to take"?

Update: I didnt put up at the front desk, mainly because the shampoo was expired, didnt

want anyone to grab it and use it so I tossed it. Which I am glad I didnt go that route because

today I found out who the gifter was because she came into my classroom with a

replacement gift. We did our gift exchanges at work on friday, my boss passed out the gifts

so we individually opened them in our class rooms, not infront of eachother and didnt

discuss or reveal who had gotten what and from who.

The gift was not aimed at my hygine or at me at all, there was a misunderstanding because

my gifter is from another country, as are about a third of my coworkers, some from

Venezuela, a few from Algeria, and one from Iran. She didnt understand what secret Santa

was but she wanted to participate, she said she had looked it up, but what ever had popped

up in google explained what kind of gift youd get for white elephant from how she explained

what shed read from google, not secret Santa,

She doesnt speak much English so something got mixed up in translation. She realized it

though when she had opened her gift, and saw the teacher in her room that day who had

also participated, that their gifts were new, so she asked that teacher who then explained

secret Santa, and my gifter felt embarrassed, she hadn't even filled out a sheet either guess

so more to not understanding to look at my interest sheet. I have worked with her before and

shes a pretty sweet lady. She got me a candle, a cute hair bow and a matching mug. I

definitely appreciate it much more knowing the circumstances. She was extremely apologetic

of the whole thing and I assured her I wasnt upset at all and that I appreciated the make up

gift. My boss also gave me a 20$ gift card because that was her making it up to me, I let my

boss know that the gifter had made up for it and she was still fine giving me the gift card as

well. (I also gifted my boss a charcuterie ginger bread house today to do with her kiddo)

although im glad things turned out the way theu did, I think the only thing I learned was

being patient and confirming circumstances before being petty, because had the other

circumstances been confirmed (thoughtless gift/ a gift directed at my hygine) I still think

leaving it at the front desk would have been well warranted, especially since no one else had

seen what shed gotten me, or knew she was my gifter. So had I done that, only her and I

would have known what was going on.

Update 2: the gifter just messaged me asking for the expired product back... im not sure what

for and I dont really want to ask, but I threw it away already. Now I feel bad for tossing it, do I

compensate her for it? How do I calculate the depreciation value of the expired product from

its original price point from 2021 when it was taken out of production and sale?? I haven't

messaged her back as I do want to let her know I threw it away, but feel like I need to make

up for it somehow because it was all just a misunderstanding. (If it wasnt clear, the

depreciation was a joke)

Gift exchanges can become surprisingly emotional because the object itself often matters less than the effort it appears to represent.

OP had followed the Secret Santa instructions, studied her coworker’s preferences, and selected several things she knew the recipient would enjoy.

Receiving expired shampoo and deodorant therefore felt less like an awkward gift and more like evidence that someone had emptied unwanted items from a cabinet without considering her at all.

Her initial disappointment was understandable.

The exchange was voluntary, participants had completed preference sheets, and OP could not safely use the products because of allergies and dandruff.

Quietly placing usable items in a communal “free” area would not necessarily have made her cruel, but doing so at work might have embarrassed the anonymous giver if she recognized them.

Throwing away an expired product was also reasonable; OP could not responsibly pass it to another person.

The update completely changed the meaning of the gift.

The coworker had misunderstood Secret Santa as something closer to a white elephant exchange because of a language and cultural communication gap.

Once she saw the other gifts, she asked for clarification, realized her mistake, and returned with a thoughtful replacement and a sincere apology.

Her behavior showed that the original gift was not meant as an insult or criticism of OP’s hygiene.

Psychologists call it the fundamental attribution error when people overestimate how much someone’s behavior reflects their character while underestimating situational explanations.

In other words, an observer may conclude that someone is lazy, rude, or thoughtless before considering confusion, limited information, language barriers, or unfamiliar customs.

Cross-cultural workplace research also shows that second-language communication can create practical misunderstandings even when everyone involved has good intentions.

That insight fits this situation without suggesting OP behaved terribly. Based on the information available, her interpretation was plausible.

The valuable lesson came from delaying a public response long enough for additional context to emerge.

Had she displayed the gifts with a pointed note, an innocent misunderstanding might have become workplace humiliation.

The coworker’s later request for the discarded shampoo creates one final awkward moment, but OP does not owe compensation for an expired item that had been given to her.

Once a gift is transferred, the recipient generally decides whether to use, donate, or discard it.

A simple response explaining that it was expired and had already been thrown away is enough. There is no meaningful depreciation calculation required.

What began as a story about a careless coworker became a reminder that intention is not always visible from the first action.

OP’s disappointment was real, but so was her colleague’s embarrassment and effort to repair the misunderstanding.

Patience did not merely prevent pettiness; it protected a relationship with someone who had been trying, imperfectly, to participate.

Here’s the comments of users:

These commenters advised donating the unwanted products rather than creating workplace drama

Wild_Ticket1413 − Just donate the items to charity. Don't give them away at work.

Ken-Popcorn − YWBTA, just donate them to a shelter

ThineOwnSelph − Yes you would be the AH. You dont need to make a spectacle of it at work.

Give it to someone else, throw it away, donate it.

These commenters warned that giving the items away at work could invite gossip or insult the anonymous giver

Hammingbir − It might be a veiled hint at your hygiene. Or your gift giver is cheap and

forgot to get anything and scoured their own supplies. In any case, donate it elsewhere. Don’t

sully the workplace with additional fodder for gossip.

cocktail4u − Since you dont know who you got them from, I would not give them away at

work. Possibly been a boss. Just a way to shove it in someone's face. Make sure next year you

list all your allergies.

FeeFiFooFunyon − If someone gives you deodorant I would give that some thought.

Especially if you work in an on your feet moving around environment. Donate them to

shelter. Don’t start drama at work. It is not worth it. I would skip Secret Santa next year.

These commenters encouraged OP to let the disappointing gift go and skip future Secret Santa exchanges

Dependent-Union4802 − It would be petty. Just let it go. No more freakin’ Secret Santa.

Busy_Chipmunk_7345 − I would throw the shampoo, donate the deodorant, and get on with

my life. Next year I would not participate. SS is like that, you rarely get anything nice. And

even if you give something that you consider a great gift, the other one might not think so.

Annual_Government_80 − Donate them elsewhere. The person who gave them is not great,

but dont come down to her level. We did a Santa gift exchange of a job of mine years ago in

California. The woman who pulled my name, handed me a green, springy, wrist, keychain, and

some other little piece of whatever I can’t even remember.

She told me after giving them to me she just didn’t know me so she went through her junk

drawer at home and gave me what she thought I might like. Some people just don’t get it.

OP initially felt hurt because the gift seemed careless, especially after she had put thought into choosing items based on her coworker’s preferences.

However, the later discovery revealed a completely different story: a language barrier and misunderstanding turned what looked like a thoughtless gesture into an honest mistake.

The situation became a reminder that intentions are not always obvious from the outside.

Do you think OP was wrong for feeling disappointed at first, or was it reasonable to wait before judging?
