Woman Lets Friend Use Parking Spot For Free, Then Discovers She’s Secretly Renting It Out

Doing a favor for a friend usually depends on one simple expectation: trust. Once that trust is broken, even a generous arrangement can unravel much faster than anyone expected.

One apartment resident had an unused parking space and agreed to let a friend use it a few days each week. Everything seemed straightforward until the building manager reported that an unfamiliar vehicle had been occupying the spot every day.

When the owner investigated, they discovered the arrangement had quietly evolved into something they had never agreed to. What happened next left one driver with an expensive surprise and a friendship hanging in the balance. Scroll down to see why Reddit was divided over whether enough warning had been given.

'AITA for taking back my parking spot without warning after finding out my friend was renting it to someone else?'

I live in an apartment building where every unit comes with one numbered parking spot. I dont currently have a car, so my spot mostly sits empty.

A friend of mine works nearby and asked if she could use it a few days a week.

I said yes and gave her the garage fob, but I was pretty clear that it was just for her car.

A few weeks ago the building manager contacted me while I was playing Ѕtake because a completely different car had been parking there every day.

When I asked my friend about it she admitted she had been letting a coworker use the spot and charging him $80 a month.

Apparently she figured it was fine since I wasn’t using it anyway.

I told her to return the fob and informed the building that I no longer gave permission for either car to park there.

Her coworker still parked there the next day and got towed.

Now my friend says I should have given them a few days to find another arrangement because her coworker had no idea she didnt own the spot.

I do feel bad for him since it sounds like she lied to him, but I also think renting out something I let her use for free was way out...

Trust is often broken not by taking something, but by quietly changing the terms of an agreement without telling the other person.

The OP generously allowed a friend to use an unused parking space under one simple condition: it was for her car only. Instead of appreciating that favor, the friend turned it into a source of income by renting the space to someone else without permission.

The emotional conflict is rooted in betrayal rather than money. Eighty dollars a month is not the central issue. What hurts is discovering that an act of kindness became a business opportunity for someone else. The friend did not ask whether she could sublet the spot or explain what she was doing.

She made that decision herself, apparently assuming that because the space was sitting empty, the owner would never notice. From the OP’s perspective, the parking space stopped being a favor and became evidence that trust had been taken for granted.

A fresh perspective is that the coworker and the friend deserve to be viewed separately. The coworker may genuinely have believed he was paying someone with the legal right to rent the space. If that is true, he became an unintended victim of the friend’s deception. The person who created the towing situation was not the OP who revoked permission, but the individual who rented out property she never owned or controlled. The unfortunate timing does not transfer responsibility to the owner.

Psychologist John Gottman has written that trust develops through countless small decisions in which people either protect or exploit another person’s vulnerability. When someone consistently acts in ways that place their own interests above agreed boundaries, confidence in the relationship begins to erode.

Trust is therefore less about isolated mistakes and more about whether someone demonstrates respect for shared expectations.

That insight helps explain why many people would revoke access immediately after discovering what happened. Once the friend secretly profited from the arrangement, the OP had good reason to doubt that future promises would be honored.

Continuing to allow access for several more days could also have created confusion about who actually had permission to use the space. Informing the building that authorization had ended was a reasonable way to reestablish clear boundaries.

The only unfortunate part is the coworker being caught in the middle. If he truly had no idea the arrangement was unauthorized, his frustration is understandable. Even so, recovering any towing fees or lost money is an issue between him and the friend who accepted his payments.

The OP did not create the false agreement and was not obligated to continue honoring it after discovering the deception. Kindness is not a license for someone else to start selling what was freely given.

Take a look at the comments from fellow users:

These Redditors said the friend’s dishonesty proved she was not a real friend

astoner11 − NTA. That isn't your friend.

pwnageface − NTA. You friend crossed the line and now they need to make right with the person they had a side deal with.

Bostylovr − Your friend should have returned the rental fee to the other person and told them their deal had been cancelled.

Your supposed friend has no qualms about screwing your over. Not a friend.

However now you know that the parking space has people who’d pay to rent it. Bonus for you.

These commenters criticized her for secretly profiting from property that was not hers

redditqueen234 − You are 100% NOT in the wrong here.

If your friend thought there was nothing wrong with what she was doing she would’ve just straight up asked you if she could rent it out to a coworker.

Instead, she asked if SHE could use it and took complete advantage of your kindness.

Plus depending on how strict your apartment building is, this could’ve gotten you in trouble.

Personally, I would be pissed and ask for all of the money she earned from renting the spot out.

Intrepid-Hornet − NTA. I'd *maybe* have been willing to give them a few days notice if she hadn't been charging him for something she was getting for free,

but since she didn't even bother to tell you and offer to split the money, absolutely not.

Like, 'don't rent out s__t that isn't yours' isn't a lesson anyone should need to be explicitly told and you don't owe her anything after that.

Freshouttapatience − The audacity! NTA and she can pay out of her fraudulent funds.

These users said the friend should cover the towing costs from the money she collected

PuzzledWork6956 − NTA - none of this is your fault. The only a__hole in this situation is your piece of s__t ex-friend.

They should pay their coworker the tow fees from the money they made by illegally renting your parking space.

If they don’t, the co-worker should be taking them to small claims court for fraud

SnooCauliflowers9874 − NTA. What a s__tty friend. She never even asked to share with you.

And your friend is the one that should pay for his towing, perhaps out of the $80 monthly that he was paying her.

These commenters felt the coworker also shared some responsibility for parking without proper access

Mysterious-Divide803 − I was gonna agree with everyone that said the person whose car got towed should go after your friend for money,

but then I started thinking if you asked for the fob back, then the person driving the car already knew they didn’t have permission to park in that spot

because they didn’t have a fob to get in the garage, so that’s on them they should’ve known better.

Either way, NTA. And before I’m roasted for punctuation by Reddit, I use talk to text because I have mobility issues, thanks for being kind today.

Cuddly_piranha − That’s a her problem. She never told them, thinking you weren’t serious.

I honestly hope her coworker sues her for the towing.

Should the resident have given the coworker a grace period even though she had never made an agreement with him? Or should the friend who collected the $80 be responsible for every awkward consequence that followed?
