Pregnant Woman Breaks Her Ankle, but Her MIL Refuses to Help and Keeps Saying, “I Told You Your Leg Isn’t Broken”

in Social Issues

When this pregnant woman missed a step on the stairs, she immediately knew something was seriously wrong. At 30 weeks pregnant, she was already dealing with the physical challenges of pregnancy. What she didn’t expect was for the person staying in her home to make an emergency even more difficult.

Her mother-in-law was visiting for the week, while her husband had to go into the office that morning. That left the woman and her MIL alone in the house.

'Injured myself pretty badly. MIL was of no help, refused to get me crutches & kept saying “I told you your leg isn’t broken!!”?'

MIL is staying with us this week. I’m currently 30 weeks pregnant. My husband had to go into his office this morning so it’s just MIL and me.

Unfortunately, I missed a step this morning going down the stairs and was sure right away I broke my leg.

I was screaming in agony and MIL came to see what happened. I directed her to please get me a chair and told her where a pair of crutches were,...

She got me a chair but kept arguing that “you can’t use crutches when pregnant”. I told her I couldn’t walk but she insisted “just lean on me.”

She helped me to the car (with no crutches, because she kept arguing that pregnant people can’t use crutches) but each step was agonizing.

She drove me to the ER and I took a couple of steps to try to get inside but started vomiting from the pain.

She just stood there, useless, staring at me. I snapped at her to get me a wheelchair. She kept loudly going on and on that there was no way I’d...

Thankfully baby is ok but unfortunately I have a broken a__le and sprained knee so my whole leg is immobilized in a boot and knee immobilizer. I have to get...

Crossing my fingers I didn’t completely tear any ligaments. MIL right away “I told you your leg isn’t broken! You didn’t need those crutches after all!”

Yeah, like a broken a__le and busted knee is any better than a broken leg. It’s looking like I’ll be on crutches or in a wheelchair for at least 6-8...

I know people freeze under pressure but damn, if I thought I broke my leg LET ME USE THE CRUTCHES and do not argue with me!! If someone is throwing...

She tried to deflect and dodge any responsibility by announcing to everyone “I told you your leg isn’t broken!” , insinuating I was overreacting. This is just one scenario in...

Update: Thank you all for the support. I'm in immense pain and am going to rest, will respond to comments a little later.

My husband does not seem nearly as upset as I am, I think MIL lied to him somewhere in her version of the story (she called him while I was...

Update #2: I've been experiencing contractions and am on my way back to the hospital. I appreciate all the comments but I likely won't be able to update or respond...

Unfortunately, she missed a step while walking down the stairs and immediately felt an intense amount of pain.

She was convinced she’d broken her leg.

She screamed in agony, and her MIL came to see what had happened. The woman asked her to bring over a chair and pointed out where she kept a pair of crutches.

She knew she wouldn’t be able to put much weight on her injured leg.

But her MIL immediately started arguing with her.

According to the MIL, pregnant women couldn’t use crutches.

The woman tried to explain that she couldn’t walk and needed some way to support herself, but her MIL insisted that she simply lean on her.

Eventually, the MIL helped her get to the car without the crutches.

Every step was excruciating.

Once they arrived at the emergency room, the woman tried to walk inside. She only managed a few steps before the pain became so severe that she started vomiting.

Instead of immediately getting help, her MIL simply stood there.

She stared at her.

The injured woman finally snapped and told her to get a wheelchair.

Even then, her MIL continued insisting that there was no way she had actually broken her leg because she’d managed to walk to the car.

Thankfully, the baby was okay.

But the injury was much more serious than the MIL had been willing to acknowledge.

The woman had actually broken her ankle and sprained her knee. Her entire leg was immobilized in a boot and knee immobilizer, and doctors ordered an MRI to determine how extensive the knee damage was.

She was facing the possibility of spending six to eight weeks on crutches or in a wheelchair.

Then, almost immediately after receiving the diagnosis, her MIL reportedly said:

“I told you your leg isn’t broken! You didn’t need those crutches after all!”

The woman was understandably furious.

She pointed out that a broken ankle was still a broken part of her leg, and that the diagnosis didn’t somehow make her earlier pain imaginary.

What upset her most wasn’t simply that her MIL had been wrong.

It was that she had refused to listen when the woman was clearly in severe pain.

If someone believes they’ve seriously injured themselves, especially during pregnancy, arguing with them about whether they’re actually hurt isn’t exactly helpful.

And when that person starts vomiting from the pain, getting medical assistance should be the priority.

The woman also felt that her MIL was trying to avoid responsibility afterward by repeatedly telling everyone, “I told you your leg isn’t broken,” as though the woman had simply overreacted.

Unfortunately, this wasn’t an isolated incident.

She explained that there was already a long history of frustrating behavior between herself and her MIL.

After sharing the story online, she received overwhelming support from commenters.

One person who had experienced multiple broken ankles explained just how painful such injuries can be and said the MIL’s behavior was completely unreasonable.

Others focused on the fact that the woman was pregnant and suggested that her husband needed to take the situation seriously.

Several commenters also argued that the MIL had demonstrated exactly why she shouldn’t be left alone with the couple’s future child if she couldn’t recognize when someone needed medical attention.

One commenter shared a personal story about falling and seriously injuring herself. When her father-in-law arrived, he immediately believed her when she said she couldn’t get up. He brought her blankets and pillows, called an ambulance, and contacted her husband.

It turned out she had broken her hip.

For that commenter, the contrast between her FIL’s response and this woman’s MIL’s behavior was striking.

When someone is injured, they shouldn’t have to convince the person helping them that they’re actually in pain.

The woman also became concerned about her husband’s reaction.

Her husband didn’t seem nearly as angry as she expected. She suspected that his mother had given him a different version of events after calling him while his wife was undergoing X-rays.

Instead of focusing on his mother’s behavior, he kept telling his wife that he was worried about her stress level and that getting so upset wasn’t healthy.

That only made her more frustrated.

She wasn’t upset for no reason.

She had fallen down the stairs, suffered a broken ankle and knee injury, was 30 weeks pregnant, and had been forced to put weight on an injured leg because the person helping her refused to get her crutches.

Then came an even more frightening update.

The woman began experiencing contractions and had to return to the hospital.

At that point, responding to online comments became the least of her concerns.

She needed to focus on herself, her unborn baby, and recovering from her injuries.

The situation also raised a bigger issue about her MIL’s role in their lives.

Here's what Redditors had to say:

A number of commenters argued that someone who refuses to take a pregnant woman’s severe pain seriously shouldn’t be trusted to provide childcare without strict boundaries.

The biggest frustration wasn’t that the MIL had incorrectly guessed the diagnosis.

She didn’t have to know whether it was a broken leg, ankle, ligament injury, or something else.

She simply needed to believe the injured woman when she said she was in severe pain and help her get medical attention safely.

Instead, she repeatedly dismissed her concerns.

For the woman, that was the part she couldn’t simply forget.

She had trusted her MIL to help during an emergency and was left feeling like she had to fight to be taken seriously.

Now, with a broken ankle, an injured knee, a possible long recovery, and a pregnancy already in its final stretch, she has far more important things to worry about than convincing her MIL that the injury was real.

And perhaps the most important lesson from the entire situation is simple:

When someone tells you they’re seriously injured, especially when they’re pregnant and in obvious pain, believe them first and argue later.
