He Lied About His Wedding Time to Get Free Labor From His Friend, Then Got Mad When He Said No

Getting invited to a friend’s wedding usually means dressing up, showing up, celebrating, and maybe dancing badly after a few drinks.

It generally does not mean arriving in a suit and discovering you’ve accidentally signed up for unpaid construction work.

One man learned that the hard way when his friend deliberately gave him the wrong arrival time for his wedding. Instead of asking him for help, the groom simply told him to arrive two hours early, apparently knowing that his friend was strong and worked in DIY.

What followed turned a wedding invitation into a surprisingly uncomfortable test of friendship.

'AITA for refusing to help set up my friend’s wedding after he lied about the start time?'

My male friend (I’m male too) invited me to his wedding and told me to be there at 10am. I turned up with my wife around 9.45am.

The wedding was actually at midday. He deliberately got me there two hours early so he could rope me into putting up gazebos, dragging tables out and carrying loads of...

I turned up dressed smart, ready for a wedding. He basically said he picked me because I’m strong and do DIY for a living.

I’m not the best man. I’m not even one of his six ushers (none of which were there yet, because they were “getting ready”!!).

He had about 100 guests he could’ve asked. I wasn’t even invited on the stag. He could easily have sorted the setup the day before or hired people.

Anyway, I said no, definitely not. I’ve actually had some neck/back troubles recently, and I was already dressed for the wedding! I also didn’t want to leave my wife sat...

I said he should’ve asked in advance and I could’ve said no so he could make other plans, rather than tricking me. His response was: “Hey dude I’m giving you...

I told him I’d travelled a long way, paid for a hotel and bought a wedding gift so I could be part of his day. Being invited doesn’t mean I...

He was cold with me during the reception and made a point of jokingly bitching about me to whoever I was chatting to throughout the day.

At one point I’d had enough and said “serves you right for being a cheapskate about your own wedding!” in a jokey way in front of his bride. But now...

The Wedding Started at Noon. He Was Told 10 AM.

The man and his wife traveled a considerable distance to attend the wedding. They paid for a hotel, bought a gift, and arrived around 9:45 in the morning, just as the groom had requested.

There was only one problem.

The wedding wasn’t until noon.

The early arrival wasn’t an accident.

The groom wanted his friend there early because he needed help setting everything up. That meant putting up gazebos, moving tables, carrying equipment, and hauling everything up a steep hill.

The friend quickly realized what was happening.

He wasn’t the best man. He wasn’t even one of the six ushers. Apparently, none of the ushers had arrived yet because they were still getting ready.

There were roughly 100 guests who could potentially have been asked for help, but the groom had specifically chosen him because he was strong and worked in DIY.

And there was another issue.

The friend had recently been dealing with neck and back problems. He was also already dressed for the wedding and had no intention of spending the morning doing heavy lifting while his wife sat around waiting.

So he refused.

He told the groom that if he had asked honestly beforehand, he could have decided whether he was willing to help. Instead, he had deliberately been given an earlier arrival time so that saying no would become much harder.

The groom’s response didn’t exactly improve things.

He told his friend that he was getting a free meal later and could at least “lend a hand to earn it back.”

That apparently made the situation even more insulting.

A Wedding Invitation Isn’t a Labor Contract

The friend pointed out that he had already traveled a long way, paid for accommodation, bought a wedding gift, and showed up to support the groom.

None of that meant he had agreed to become part of the setup crew.

The groom didn’t seem willing to let it go.

During the reception, he remained cold and repeatedly made joking comments about his friend to other guests. Eventually, after taking enough of the public digs, the friend fired back.

In front of the bride, he jokingly told the groom, “Serves you right for being a cheapskate about your own wedding!”

It was meant as a joke, but afterward he began wondering whether he’d gone too far.

Perhaps refusing the work was justified. But had that final comment crossed the line?

The Real Problem Wasn’t the Gazebos

There is an important difference between asking for help and engineering a situation where someone feels obligated to help.

Friendship research consistently points to trust, communication, and reciprocity as important foundations of healthy friendships. The American Psychological Association notes that strong relationships are supported by behaviors such as clear communication, mutual support, and respect for each person’s boundaries. That distinction matters here.

If the groom had said, “Could you arrive at 10 and help me set up? I completely understand if you can’t,” the friend would have had a real choice.

Instead, he was given incomplete information and only discovered the actual plan after traveling to the venue.

That makes the issue bigger than carrying tables.

The groom effectively made the decision for him.

And when the friend refused, rather than acknowledging that he had handled the request badly, he tried to guilt him with the promise of a meal.

That is probably why the situation felt so disrespectful.

The friend wasn’t simply refusing to help someone he cared about. He was objecting to being manipulated into helping.

Here's the comments of Reddit users:

Commenters called the groom’s behavior manipulative, cheap, and bizarre. Several pointed out that he could have simply asked for help ahead of time instead of lying about the start time.

squirreltrap − NTA- but your friend sure is. He should have been upfront about his plans for your help. You can’t ever assume people can just do free labor on...

wixebo − NTA Your friend is a p__ck who blatantly tried to use you.

PhilsFanDrew − I take it you are from the UK (turned up, midday, spelling of "labour"). Is it normal there to not receive a formal invitation via the mail with...

TulipFarmer27 − NTA. Man, after his comments I would have walked out, skipped the wedding, returned the present, and found something interesting to do with my wife. Let him eat...

Shot-Zombie-36 − NTA. He was being a cheapskate, you did nit owe him labour at your health expense.

Boogity2024 − NTA and don't lose a moment of sleep over it. I hope his spouse was embarrassed; this is what the rest of their life will look like -...

Frankensteins_Kid − NTA. He lied and tricked you to get free labour & have audacity to act like _you're_ the bad guy? Someone probably should warn the bride about potential...

humannhere − NTA this is kinda bizarre. Dude chose you like you’re a Pokémon, “Go, not so close friend! Assemble my wedding! ”. Good job saying no and also standing...

Others questioned the friendship itself, especially because the man hadn’t even been invited to the stag event and wasn’t part of the wedding party.

pottersquash − So you just hung around for 2 hours? Went back to hotel? It was just you and the groom and y'all had to set up the entire wedding...

mesal865 − I actually don't think he sees you as a friend, he didn't even invite you to his stag night. Time to get a new friend

The friend wasn’t obligated to haul tables up a hill simply because he was invited to dinner afterward.

If anything, the groom’s biggest mistake was assuming that friendship meant automatic access to someone’s time, labor, and physical effort.

He could have asked.

He could have planned ahead.

He could have hired help.

Instead, he lied about the arrival time and expected his friend to play along.

The final “cheapskate” comment was probably sharper than necessary, especially in front of the bride, but considering the groom spent the rest of the reception publicly mocking him, it is hard to argue that the friend was the one who created the tension.

A wedding is supposed to celebrate the people you care about.

It probably shouldn’t begin with tricking them into carrying a gazebo up a hill.
