Woman Warns Brother About Controlling Girlfriend, Then Watches Him Slowly Disappear From the Family

in Social Issues

Being close to your family can be a source of comfort, but things can become complicated when a romantic partner sees that closeness as a threat.

Over time, small disagreements can turn into distance, resentment, and relationships that barely resemble what they used to be.

The original poster (OP) had always been extremely close with her younger brother, Brandon, until his girlfriend began questioning the way their family interacted.

What started as uncomfortable comments slowly became accusations, missed gatherings, and growing isolation from relatives who had always been part of his life.

Eventually, OP decided she needed to protect her own household and set a firm boundary about who was welcome around her child.

Read on to see whether that decision pushed her brother further away or finally changed something.

Woman fears her brother’s girlfriend is isolating him from their close family

'AITAH for telling my brother his girlfriend is the reason he won’t have a relationship with his nephew?'

For contexts I (29F) and my brother Brandon (26M) have always been close and have similar

tastes in various things. As well as my family as a whole are all very close, we hug goodbye

and tell each other “I love you” when we’re either leaving each other’s homes or ending a

phone call. My Brandon’s girlfriend Taylor has never really been one of my favorite people

there was just something about her that I couldn’t quite put my finger on that had me

disliking her. Maybe it was watching my normally outgoing and vibrant brother slowly fading

away. I expressed my dislike for her to family and how Brandon was slowly dulling himself

down for Taylor but no one else could see it and told me maybe I was reading too much into

it or I was being too harsh.

December of last year my husband and I welcomed our first child together a healthy baby

boy. Brandon wasn’t home from his work trip yet but was supposed to be back the following

Friday and told the family that he doesn’t want anyone sending pictures or videos of the

baby until he could meet him in person, which I thought was very sweet. When Brandon

finally met his nephew we were at our parents house and he brought Taylor with him, at the

time no big deal she really isn’t my favorite person but if Brandon was happy with her so be

it. Taylor showed no interest in my son which to each their own, I really didn’t care if she liked

him or not it wasn’t her nephew.

Every Christmas the whole family goes to my grandparents house to exchange gifts, open

stocking and have brunch together. It is always a great time together however Brandon

wasn’t there and he had promised that he would be there for his “niece”(our cousin Jared’s

daughter) and nephews first Christmas. Brandon ended up giving a half ass excuse that

because this year we weren’t having Christmas dinner at my grandparents house we were

having it at Taylor’s parents he had to help set up. Which we learned later down the line was

a bold faced lie Taylor told him not to go.

Now this is where s__t starts to hit the fan. Taylor apparently thought my family was too close

and was also convinced that Brandon and our younger cousin Hollie (25F) had some sort of

“relationship” with each other spoiler alert there isn’t anything weird going on there Hollie is

married and lives out of state so we barely see her. But in Taylor’s mind there’s an

inappropriate relationship there. After the new years Brandon had this very forces and

uncomfortable conversation with Hollie about how he only loves her as a cousin and nothing

more this made things EXTREMELY awkward for the entire family because we all ended up

getting our names d__g through the mud by Taylor because we weren’t going to change

anything about our family to make her comfortable. My parents tried to do damage control

but unfortunately it only made matters worse. I tried to talk to Brandon on several occasions

and explain where everyone was coming from but his mind was made up. This goes on for a

few more months of Taylor filling Brandon’s head with false ideas and isolating him more and

more from the rest of the family.

Easter rolls around and this was going to be the last big family gathering I would be going to

for a while because my husband got a job offer clear across the country and we’d be moving

a few weeks later. I told Brandon that I wanted him there because he was my brother and I

wanted him to see his nephew before we moved I also told him if Taylor showed up with him

my little family unit would be leaving quietly because I don’t want her around my child and I

refuse to play peacekeeper for the family. My husband supported that decision

wholeheartedly. Brandon did show up by himself and it was truly an awkward experience

because no real apologies had been made to the family. Fast forward to my birthday this is

the first time Brandon reached out to talk to me since before the move and I told him I

wanted him to come out and visit and he told me Taylor would be coming. I told him that

under no circumstances was she welcome in my home or around my children and she will be

the reason he has no relationship with his nephew. He didn’t respond and now I’m wondering

if I was too harsh and should’ve left no response.

UPDATE: About 2 weeks ago my mom called me and told me Brandon was sleeping in her

spare room and had texted her at midnight telling her that he was at the house and asked if

he could stay for a while. My mom told him that he was more than welcome to stay until he

got on his feet. They also rented him a u-haul to get all his stuff gathered. He told me that he

and Taylor are done dating but they are still friends, but he was tired of not seeing the family

and having everything he wants to do get picked apart and if he was to see the family it had

to be on neutral ground. My mom has also convinced him to move up north with them. He

and I are talking more and I’m optimistic that the relationship between Brandon and the

family with start to heal and start to return back to normal.

UPDATE 2: This past week was Thanksgiving we had both sets of parents staying with us and

on the night my parents landed they surprised me with Brandon. He seemed to start getting

his spark back but I could see he was still little upset which is understandable they were

together 2 years. What concerned me was how he wasn’t taking that good of care of himself,

which could be depression. I was also informed by my grandmother that Brandon was going

to be included in the family Christmas festivities which will be very different this year with 5

members of the family being in different states.

Sometimes loving someone means resisting the urge to rescue them from every painful choice they make.

Watching a close family member slowly withdraw, change their personality, and abandon relationships can create anger and grief at the same time.

The hardest part is knowing when protection becomes pressure, and when distance becomes necessary.

In this situation, OP was not simply deciding whether she liked her brother’s girlfriend.

She was watching someone she had always known as outgoing and connected gradually become isolated from a family he once loved being around.

Taylor’s jealousy toward relatives, objections to family gatherings, and apparent influence over Brandon’s contact with loved ones naturally raised alarms.

OP’s boundary around her home and child came from accumulated distrust, not one disagreement.

At the same time, telling Brandon that Taylor could cost him a relationship with his nephew may have felt like another person forcing him to choose sides.

That is where a different perspective becomes important.

When someone may be involved with a controlling partner, direct attacks on that partner can sometimes unintentionally push them further away.

They may become defensive, ashamed, or feel that returning to family requires admitting everyone else was right.

OP’s strongest move may therefore have come later: when Brandon returned, the family gave him somewhere safe to land rather than demanding explanations immediately.

This helps explain why Brandon’s return should probably be treated less like a victory over Taylor and more like the beginning of recovery.

He may be grieving the relationship, questioning his own judgment, and relearning how to exist without having his choices constantly examined.

Rebuilding connection through ordinary things, family meals, holidays, calls, time with his nephew, can give him stability without forcing him to process everything before he is ready.

OP was justified in protecting her household, but the healthiest next step is probably not “getting Brandon back to normal.”

It is giving him room to become himself again at his own pace.

Sometimes the most powerful message a family can offer is simple: You do not have to defend your past choices to have a place with us now.

Here’s the feedback from the Reddit community:

These commenters believed Brandon may be in an emotionally abusive relationship and focused on Taylor’s isolation and control tactics

rez2metrogirl − Are you sure Taylor isn’t abusing Brandon, OP? Isolation, manipulation, lies,

and dramamongering, I’d be very worried for Brandon’s safety.

TheCalamityBrain − Isolation is a tactic used by abusers. NTA But maybe send hin a book in

hiw to survive a narcissist. Call him weekly

Fun-War6684 − Your brother is being abused. You literally describing all the steps down to

isolation and alienation of his own family. Men can be abused too.   Please just tell him you

will always be there for him.

LeighPA714 − If this was your sister & her BF was doing this you’d be calling it what it is.

Abuse she’s controlling him & isolating him from his family & I’m sure his friends too.

Hopefully you can get him to see what’s she’s doing. Ask him if it’s ok if your husband did

this to you. How would he feel. This woman is an abuser pure & simple.

leeny_bean − Your brother is in an emotionally abusive relationship. She is controlling him,

and isolating him from family and likely friends as well. She is likely controlling other aspects

of his life. It will only get worse. He needs to get out.

This group highlighted how Taylor appears to be cutting Brandon off from family and possibly friends, which they saw as a major warning sign

Firm-Park-4437 − There’s definitely some coercive tactics within their relationship - a good,

healthy relationship should bring out the best in each person, not cause them to withdraw

from their family. You have the complete right to say who can and can’t be around your

children and after setting that boundary for it to be respected and have no pushback.

It comes across as tho Taylor is not allowing your brother to visit alone and that is also

inappropriate as well as incredibly unhealthy behaviour. . She may possibly believe that you

(inadvertently or otherwise) may say something that begins to drive a wedge between her and your brother

ObligationNo2288 − NTA. He is being isolated from the family. I’m sure his contact with

friends has diminished with GF around. Would he be open to a conversation about her

isolating him from his family? My son had a gf/wife who did this. For years he was lost to us.

Good luck. She is toxic Hopefully he will see it.

LibraryMouse4321 − Taylor is definitely doing whatever she can to isolate him from his

family, and probably his friends, too. She’s whispering in his ears like a little demon, and if he

doesn’t wise up and put a stop to her, he’s going to lose everything. Don’t let her anywhere

near your family, and keep telling him how toxic she is.

Maybe one of these days he might even hear you.

These Redditors urged OP to keep communication open so Brandon still has a safe place to turn if the relationship collapses

Commercial_Toe_1739 − I was your brother once. I can tell you that he is being abused and

manipulated in the background. While I totally understand why you would tell him she’s not

allowed around your family, it’s going to push him away even further. Whatever she is

threatening him with (self harm, abuse, leaving him, etc. ) is really working here.

I’m going to assume she’s never had proper love as my first girlfriend in college was exactly

like this and said my cousins and I were too close for her liking. It’s pretty clear that Taylor is

isolating your brother from anyone and it’s going to be ugly when they break up.

I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s already tried too and she’s guilt tripped him in various ways.

Not to be weird here but is she more attractive than who he’s date in the past? If so, this can

also play a factor in it. Your brother isn’t going to figure out this isn’t healthy until something gets crazy.

My girlfriend tried opening the door at while I was driving and threatened to jump out, told

me she hated my cousins, and would still call my mom when I wouldn’t pick up her calls. It

was exhausting and she broke me. Taylor is breaking down your brother till he has no will.

Sounds crazy but it’s what’s happening.

I’d show your brother this or talk to him with an important male figure in his life and let him

know that you care about him.

Awesome_Forky − NAH You are setting a boundary. Your brother seems in over his head.

Abusers tend to isolate their victim. It seems Taylor is isolating your brother. Keep

communication open. He will need it. Edit: Your brother can't be the AH if he is a victim.

Taylor is AH but your question resolves around your brother and not her.

OP watched her brother slowly distance himself from the family he had always been close to, leaving everyone confused and hurt.

While setting boundaries around her home and child was understandable, the bigger question was whether those boundaries pushed Brandon away or gave him the space to realize what was happening.

In the end, Brandon’s return suggests he was beginning to recognize the isolation he experienced.

Do you think OP was right to stand firm against Taylor, or should she have tried harder to keep the peace for her brother’s sake? Share your thoughts below!
