Admin Worker Accidentally Torpedoes Rude Ex-Colleague’s Dream Job With One Honest Laugh

Some people walk into a workplace and act like they are already owed respect, authority, and admiration. That was exactly the kind of energy the new history teacher brought with him when he arrived straight out of university.

While the rest of the staff saw a young educator who still had a lot to learn, he saw himself as a rising star whose brilliance was immediately obvious. Unfortunately, he also believed that anyone working outside of teaching, especially the admin staff, existed several steps beneath him. His condescending attitude and dismissive comments made day to day interactions frustrating, and the impression he left lingered long after he moved on.

Years later, fate handed one of his former colleagues a moment she never expected. A phone call came into her office from a prestigious boys’ school requesting a reference for a job applicant. When she heard the name, she could not help laughing.

Here’s The Original Story:

'Condescending colleague - I cost him his desired job?'

I work in admin in a private school. Some years ago we had a new history teacher, straight out of university,

who thought he was the Universe's gift to education, and because I worked in admin, I was a lower form of life. He was condescending and quite often just plain...

A few years later, he had moved schools. My boss was out of the office, so I picked up a call for him,

and was asked if he could give a reference for a former teacher, who had applied to one of our city's most prestigious boys' schools.

I asked who the reference was for, so I could give my boss a heads-up, and,  oh joy! it was the unpleasant ex-colleague!

Before I could stop myself I started to laugh. The very nice deputy head on the line asked me why. I told him I was prejudiced,

because of the way he treated me, but also said that the history marks the years he taught at our school were the worst they had ever been.

My boss came back later and phoned this man, and when asked if he would re-employ said person, said definitely not.. Boss and I shared a good laugh about that...

The narrator had worked in administrative support at a private school for years when the fresh out of university history teacher joined the staff.

From the beginning, he treated her and the other admin workers as if they were part of the furniture rather than part of the team. He often spoke down to them, brushed off questions, and acted as though their time and expertise were insignificant compared to his.

After a few years of mediocre teaching and strained working relationships, he left the school and moved on to another position. Life continued, and eventually he faded into the background of old workplace memories.

Then came the day when her boss was out of the office and she picked up a call intended for him. The person on the other end introduced himself as a deputy head from one of the most prestigious boys’ schools in the city.

He explained that a former teacher of theirs had applied for a position, and they needed a reference. She asked for the name so she could prepare the information for her boss before he returned. And that was when everything took a turn.

Hearing the ex-colleague’s name caught her so off guard that she laughed before she even thought about how it might sound. The deputy head politely asked why.

She answered honestly. She admitted that she held personal bias due to how poorly he had treated her when they worked together, and then added a more substantive concern: during the years he taught history at their school, the students’ marks were the lowest they had ever been.

It was a simple statement, but it carried weight. Her boss later returned the call and was asked directly whether he would re-employ the teacher.

He did not hesitate. He answered that he would not. When he hung up, he and the narrator shared a laugh about how the moment unfolded.

Did her reaction cost him the job? No one could say for certain. But it certainly did not help.

Here’s the input from the Reddit crowd:

Many commenters agreed that someone who disrespects admin staff reveals more about their character than they realize.

n2musicchick − His history did him in.

Chemical_Cut7396 − I cost someone I never worked with a job opportunity in a similar situation.

I am a consultant so I visit a lot of companies, usually for a short time in what we call the 'firefighter' situation.

The company is usually in trouble and needs someone to do the job as there is an overload and a very close deadline.

Last year, one former colleague that I met in this context, reached out to me and asked if I remember a guy who worked there.

I was upfront and answered that he had left the week before I came in, so I never met him, but the team was happy with him gone.

They told me I must be mistaken because the time period seems to overlap.

This was in pick COVID and on different sites so I could have been off by a few days and just never saw him. They said that the guy wrote...

I confirmed that I could be a few days off, but not 4 months off. They did not hire him.

Others shared how support staff, receptionists, and technicians often influence hiring decisions behind the scenes, simply by reporting how candidates behave when no one “important” is watching.

Main_Scallion2394 − Honestly, if he treated admin like they were beneath him, he was never going to survive at a more prestigious school anyway.

The way someone treats support staff says everything. You didn’t sabotage him, karma just needed a witness.

dnhs47 − One company I worked for, back when all interviews were in-person (before Skype, etc. ), included receptionists in the candidate interview process.

They didn’t “interview” the candidate per se, but were always asked about how the candidate interacted with them.

I saw many candidates tagged “no hire” because of rude, unpleasant interactions with the receptionists. Who needs that in the workplace, right?

There was even a clue in the “we’d like you to come for an interview” letter, that their interview would “begin upon arrival at our office.”

No one paid any attention to that, though, so the receptionists saw (and shared! ) the candidates’ true colors, for better or worse.

blobbysnorey − I’ve never been of the opinion to give someone a high rating for a reference just to move them along - p__s poor performance receives p__s poor ratings

Several users described similar situations in which rude coworkers were passed over, denied opportunities, or exposed for dishonesty because someone finally told the truth.

Psytrancedude99 − This made me "evil grin". As a teacher who has worked with sometimes arrogant and rude colleagues.

This hits the spot! Had a colleague who was just rude and condescending to me about everything at a previous job. She came and interviewed at my school.

When I saw it was her, I told the school not to hire her as her attitude and values won't fit our school. She messaged me 2 weeks later asking...

SetIcy438 − Yeah, the first law of working is to always be super nice to the techs and admin staff.

And try not to make extra work, ever. At my ex-husband’s first job he was a “researcher.”

He loved card games but wasn’t the best player (not the worst either). He started playing pinochle with the techs at lunch once a week or so.

He was always pleasant, always had a bad Dad joke to tell, and frequently lost-they were playing penny a point so it wasn’t a huge financial issue at all.

Of course he knew all of their names and would always greet them if they saw each other at work.

After a couple of months he discovered that all his work orders miraculously floated to the top of the techs’ to do list. Huh, isn’t that odd? /s Be nice

okokokok78 − My first job out of school was a design office and the admin person was the center of the office, really kept the office functioning.

I learned early that she needed to be a friend if I wanted to get anything done.

foxymoron − You never know who might be able to hold the door open for you later in life - or slam it in your face. Be nice.

berryitaly − Admins do indeed see everything because I'm one. People talk in front of me and I see different approaches to the same situation,

and I see whose approach was successful and whose were not. I see or hear of all types of behaviors so yeah. ..

References exist for a reason. They are not a formality, and they do not require anyone to pretend a difficult colleague was a joy to work with. In this case, one honest moment revealed both a pattern of disrespect and a history of poor performance, two things no prestigious school wants to inherit.

Whether or not her reaction changed the outcome, it highlighted a simple truth that many commenters echoed. Careers are built on skill, but they are protected by character. And sometimes, the door a person slammed on someone else is the very door that stays closed for them later.
