She Asked Her DIL to Apply for a Job, Then Refused to Hire Her After Seeing How Unprepared She Was

For more than 30 years, one woman built a successful business from the ground up. With more than 100 employees, she had every reason to take hiring seriously, even when the applicant happened to be family.

So when her daughter-in-law decided she wanted to return to work after more than seven years as a stay-at-home mother, the woman expected at least some basic preparation. Instead, she says, her DIL had no resume, struggled with simple paperwork, and had a long history of relying on others to handle everyday tasks.

Her son wanted his mother to give his wife a job anyway. The problem was that the business owner did not think family connections were enough to qualify someone for a position. Now the disagreement has created tension between mother and son, and she is wondering whether protecting her company was worth risking the relationship.

Here’s how the conflict unfolded.

She Was Family, But That Did Not Make Her Qualified

The woman explained that her daughter-in-law had been a stay-at-home mom for more than seven years. Before that, she had worked as a server but stopped working after marrying her son.

Now that their children were all in school, the DIL wanted to return to the workforce. More specifically, she wanted a career rather than another serving job.

Her mother-in-law, however, had serious concerns.

According to her, the DIL had repeatedly struggled with things that most adults would be expected to handle independently. She had needed help filling out basic documents and frequently called her mother-in-law with what she considered simple questions.

Planning was another issue. The woman gave an example involving one of her grandchildren’s birthday parties. Her DIL had apparently forgotten to reserve the trampoline venue, leaving the family scrambling when the party arrived.

There were even smaller things that bothered her, such as her DIL asking someone else to fill her car with gas.

The woman admitted that calling her DIL “helpless” sounded harsh, but she felt years of watching these patterns had shaped her opinion.

Then her son asked the obvious question: Would his mother give his wife a job?

She agreed to speak with her.

The first problem became apparent almost immediately.

The DIL did not have a resume.

For the business owner, that was enough to say no. She explained that her DIL simply did not appear qualified for the positions available, and she was not willing to create a job just because they were related.

Her son was furious.

He pointed out that his sister had received a job at the company during COVID after losing work. But his mother saw a major difference. Her daughter had a master’s degree, was overqualified for the entry-level position she accepted, went through interviews, started at the bottom and worked extremely hard.

She told her son that his sister had earned the opportunity.

He suggested giving his wife something simple, perhaps a secretary position.

That wording did not help.

To the business owner, there was no such thing as “just” giving someone a position. Every employee represented the company, and hiring someone who could not perform the job could create problems far beyond one family argument.

Experts Warn That Family Businesses Can Pay a Price for Nepotism

Family businesses often face exactly this dilemma. Harvard Business Review notes that family members can sometimes be hired because of relationships or obligations rather than competence, and that poorly performing relatives may receive passes that ordinary employees would not.

That does not mean relatives should never work together. In fact, experts point out that family members can be excellent employees when they have the necessary skills and are held to clear standards. The problem begins when family status replaces those standards.

That distinction is important here.

The mother was not saying her DIL could never work for the company. She was saying that being married to her son was not a qualification. If she wanted a position, she could build a resume, apply for a suitable job and demonstrate that she could perform it.

That approach might actually protect both the company and the family relationship. If the DIL succeeds, she earns the position on her own merits. If she struggles, the business owner has a legitimate reason to address the problem without making it personal.

The Family Argument Was Bigger Than a Job

There is also an uncomfortable possibility that neither side wanted to confront.

The son may have been asking his mother to solve a problem that should have been solved elsewhere.

If his wife genuinely wants a career after years away from the workforce, she may need help rebuilding her resume, refreshing her skills and learning how to navigate the hiring process. Those are very different things from simply handing her a job.

And the mother-in-law’s criticism of her DIL may also be coloring the situation. Calling someone “helpless” is a judgment about their character, not a measurable job qualification. The fairest test would be whether the woman can meet the requirements of a specific position.

Still, the business owner had one thing working strongly in her favor: she had already seen what happens when standards are treated differently for family members.

Harvard Business Review specifically warns that family businesses can suffer when relatives are given special treatment, because other employees may see the arrangement as unfair.

A company with more than 100 employees is not a small favor between relatives. There are other people’s jobs, morale and trust involved.

Let's dive into the reactions from Reddit:

Many commenters agreed that the woman was NTA, especially because she had treated her daughter differently only after determining that her daughter was qualified and willing to start at the bottom.

Rain3lf − The other option is you sit down with your son and tell him she can have a job at the lowest level just like your daughter and she...

CareyAHHH − NTA "He asked to jsut make her a secretary or something" This is so condescending. Sounds like he doesn't respect his wife or secretaries. If he really wants...

And if she does not at least meet the requirements of the job, then she will be fired.

Is_It_Soup_Season − NTA But maybe you are because your son is clearly very sexist and dismissive of work traditionally performed by women if thinks you can be a successful secretary...

Suspicious_Juice717 − NTA “A secretary or something”. Your son clearly doesn’t respect staff if he said this s__t.

Several people also criticized the son’s suggestion of giving his wife “a secretary or something,” pointing out that administrative jobs still require real skills and responsibility.

LittleSubject9904 − Mom is a brilliant success and wife is completely helpless. Ooof, the psychology here is brutal.

peagreenboat12 − Another thing to factor in this that firing her will be a lot worse for relations with your son than simply not hiring in the first place. If...

acrylicmole − Absolutely not. Tell your son you can sit down with them and make a chart on qualifications of sis vs. in-law if they need a clear picture and...

flynena-3 − NTA you are not obligated to give her a job if she is not demonstrated that she has the basic skills or capability to do the job or...

Others suggested a compromise: if there is an entry-level position the DIL can genuinely qualify for, she should apply like everyone else, complete the interview process and accept the same expectations as every other employee.

Wise-Bother9942 − NTA OP for not giving her a job she is incapable of doing, sounds like an attempt to use nepotism to get a free salary on your companies...

\^ Also what she just quit her job immediately after getting married to be a stay at home wife or did she have kids? From this it seems she just...

Anyway OP keep being you it seems like DIL has a lot of red flags, but your son chose her, and now they have kids that's never going to change....

moew4974 − NTA. Your son needs to think about trying to help his wife finally learn basic skills before she goes into the workplace. He's apparently had years to help...

The business owner may have been blunt about her daughter-in-law, and some of her examples could certainly be interpreted differently. But refusing to invent a position for a family member is not inherently cruel.

If the DIL truly wants a career, this could be the beginning rather than the end. She can create a resume, develop her skills, apply for jobs and prove that she is capable.

Family should open doors when appropriate. It should not remove the need to walk through them.

Would you have hired the DIL and given her a chance, or would you have made her apply like every other employee?
