She Spent 10 Years Defending Her Best Friend, Until She Realized Why Everyone Else Walked Away

in Social Issues

For almost a decade, the OP believed her best friend was simply unlucky with people. “Brittney” always seemed to have a story about someone who had betrayed her, disrespected her, or treated her terribly. Friends disappeared. Jobs ended badly. Relationships exploded. And for years, OP defended her because that was what best friends did.

Then OP moved three hours away and introduced Brittney to her boyfriend’s newly single friend. The two hit it off immediately, perhaps a little too well. Within five months, Brittney had left a good-paying job and moved in with him.

That was when OP began seeing things she could no longer explain away.

The more she learned, the harder it became to ignore the possibility that Brittney was not simply surrounded by terrible people. Here’s how a ten-year friendship finally reached its breaking point.

She Spent 10 Years Defending Her Best Friend, Until She Realized Why Everyone Else Walked Away

'AITA for protecting my peace after realizing why EVERYONE leaves my best friend?'

I feel so f__king guilty.

I (29F, long time Spotify listenerr…. hi Morgan), have been best friends with “Brittney” (28F) for almost 10 years *as of posting this*

Brittney has always had drama follow her. I’ve watched multiple lifelong friendships end because someone apparently did something horrible to her. I always defended her, even when stories didn’t completely...

A few years ago, I moved three hours away and introduced Brittney to my boyfriend’s newly single friend, honestly thinking they both needed to get laid, and I was wildly...

They started dating almost immediately, and they would have these HUGE fights, but she blamed it on long distance.

So naturally, despite my arguments that this was probably a bad idea, she left her amazing pay job to move in with him five months after meeting.

Since living closer, I’ve seen a completely different side of her and our friendship has changed.

She’s gone through five jobs in two years, usually because of conflicts or feeling “disrespected,” and dropped out of two college **programs,** not classes.

Their relationship is incredibly toxic from both sides. I’ve obviously heard her side, but she never told Me all The stuff she was doing …

I only found out Through her boyfriend venting to mine, I started hearing the other side.

I learned about police investigations with her exes, allegations of her following them, false SA/DV accusations, and that much more was happening in her current relationship than I knew, which...

When I confronted her, she admitted to falsifying things before, but I always gave her the benefit of the doubt because I know shame can cause people to retract.

I work in mental health, and the more I started realizing what she is truly like, the harder the red flags became to ignore. I started encouraging therapy or psychiatrist.

She only decided to go to couples therapy because it was for both of them, her boyfriend agreed because he also knew she needed some sort of mental health support.

Things reached a breaking point 10 months ago when her boyfriend called me crying during a serious crisis at their home and asked me to get her out. I told...

She was later diagnosed with borderline personality disorder ***and*** bipolar II but refuses individual therapy,

saying it’s too expensive and therapists “make you think you were SA’d as a child.”

She believes medication is enough, despite our arguments about it lol. She only takes her medications on “bad days” despite my education attempts at proper medication management.

It’s not the mental health thing that is the biggest issue though, it’s also how she treats me.

She belittles me, makes me the joke, shares extremely personal things about me and is invasive/confrontational/controlling. She has my Find My location and has literally shown up where I am.

Recently, she called saying her boyfriend “got physical” with her. I took it seriously and told my boyfriend, who happened to be with him.

Turns out he was trying to leave an argument while Brittney blocked the door. When he opened it, her hand got caught and he was pushed into the wall.

She admitted this was what happened but was furious I told my boyfriend, saying because of her diagnosis I should know she sometimes blows stories out of proportion.

We didn’t speak for two weeks. I eventually reached out because I couldn’t throw away 10 years.

While making up, she told me if she and her boyfriend hadn’t fixed THEIR relationship, she wouldn’t have remained friends with ME.

Something in me changed because of that. Now I don’t want to be around her.

Even her messages make me anxious, and other people in our boyfriend’s friend group say the same thing, to the point her and her boyfriend are becoming excluded from things…...

That’s where the guilt comes in. I don’t hate her or want anything bad to happen to her. I don’t want to punish her for struggling with her mental health.....

After almost 10 years of hearing about everyone who eventually left her, I’m realizing I’m probably about to become another name on that list.. AITA for finally becoming one of...

# Edit: also any and all suggestions on how I make this boundary clear to her without impacting the boyfriends’ or their friend group bc I can’t keep ghosting her...

like I said, her man is very aware and has told everyone he isn’t happy in that relationship, but says “its too much invested to leave”

(he has paid off 10 k in debts in addition to paying credit cards, $2600 + utilities in rent, covering her daily expenses since she is frequently between jobs, pays...

she thinks this is hilarious, will make plans around this btw )… he is actively losing all his friends because he won’t leave and that breaks my heart.

Edit: moral of the story — don’t let your friends date your boyfriends bestie or anyone in your family

The Side of the Story OP Had Never Heard

At first, Brittney’s relationship looked like another case of two people fighting because of distance. But after OP lived closer, she witnessed the chaos firsthand.

Brittney went through five jobs in two years, usually after conflicts or feeling disrespected. She also left two college programs. Her relationship became increasingly volatile, with huge arguments going both ways.

Then OP started hearing the boyfriend’s side through her own boyfriend.

There were stories about previous relationships, police investigations, alleged stalking, and accusations that OP says had been falsified. When confronted, Brittney admitted she had lied about some things in the past.

That admission changed the way OP viewed everything.

Because OP works in mental health, she tried to approach the situation with compassion rather than judgment. She encouraged Brittney to seek professional help. Eventually, Brittney was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder and bipolar II disorder.

But diagnosis did not magically solve the problems.

Brittney refused individual therapy, saying it was too expensive and claiming therapists would convince her that she had experienced childhood sexual abuse. She also reportedly treated medication as something to take only on “bad days,” despite OP trying to explain why psychiatric medication generally needs to be managed with a healthcare professional.

The relationship eventually reached a crisis point.

About ten months before the Reddit post, Brittney’s boyfriend called OP crying and asked her to come get Brittney out of the house. OP told him to contact the police.

Later, Brittney called OP claiming her boyfriend had gotten physical with her. OP took the accusation seriously and told her own boyfriend, who happened to be with him.

The story turned out to be more complicated. According to OP, the boyfriend had been trying to leave during an argument while Brittney blocked the doorway. When he opened the door, her hand became caught and he was pushed into the wall.

Brittney admitted that was what happened, but became furious that OP had told her boyfriend.

Then came the sentence that finally broke something inside OP.

While the two women were trying to repair their friendship after two weeks of silence, Brittney told OP that if she and her boyfriend had not fixed their relationship, she would not have remained friends with OP either.

After ten years, OP suddenly realized she did not want to keep fighting this hard for the friendship.

Understanding the Difference Between Compassion and Responsibility

The important part of this story is that Brittney’s diagnoses do not make her a bad person, and they do not automatically explain every harmful thing she has done. Mental illness can affect emotions, impulses, relationships, and behavior, but it does not mean everyone around the person has to accept mistreatment.

The National Institute of Mental Health explains that borderline personality disorder can involve intense emotions, impulsivity, and unstable relationships, but it also emphasizes that effective treatments exist. Psychotherapy, including dialectical behavior therapy, can help people develop skills for managing intense emotions and improving relationships.

That distinction matters here.

OP spent years trying to be understanding. She defended Brittney, encouraged treatment, responded during crises, and even became involved when she believed someone might be in danger. But supporting someone is different from becoming responsible for keeping their life together.

The same principle applies to bipolar disorder. NIMH recommends following an individualized treatment plan and taking prescribed medication as directed, rather than changing medication use independently.

OP cannot make those choices for Brittney.

And perhaps that is the hardest lesson of all. Sometimes loving someone means admitting that you are no longer capable of being close to them without losing your own sense of peace.

Let's dive into the reactions from Reddit:

Several commenters living with bipolar disorder or who had experience with BPD stressed that mental illness should not be used as a blanket excuse for repeatedly hurting other people.

ViolinistOdd5726 − NTA as a fellow human with mental illnesses, including bipolar II, her illness isn’t an excuse for continued s__tty behavior.

She’s been offered plenty of chances for not only friendship but resources for her mental illnesses. For your own sanity break those ties.

LadyWatz35 − NTA. Before I even got to part of BPD, I already knew. Once you know the disorder, it's really easy to spot.

Let's say, hypothetically, she did get help for the disorders she has; that disorder is very hard to treat. I had a friend like her; I'm a few years older...

I don't think she's a bad person; I love her, but I can't have that kind of chaos in my life, and she is a hurricane of chaos.

I'm a fixer, I want to fix you if you have a problem, but fixing someone doesn't exist if they don't want to fix themselves.

bmw5986 − NTA. You can't "fix" her or "save" her. You also can't be friends with her anymore.

Now you see why multiple others have bowed out over the years. Shes toxic. Like an addict, she has to want to fix herself.

Rn, she doesn't. Its ok to let her go. Don't feel guilty for saying you've had enough of her toxic bs.

VulcaninTheSheets − I have bipolar disorder and I can say from experience if you don't want to manage your mental illness, it won't be managed.

No amount of other people wanting it for you, will make you manage your own condition.

I've been on meds for about a year and it hasn't been an easy road but I have to take my meds and meet with my psychiatrist.

I am responsible for my mental health. You are not responsible for your friend being unwilling to manage their mental health.

Don't put yourself in an unsafe situation because she won't manage her mental health properly.

feeen1ks − One Hot Take: BPD is the most useless diagnosis. I will go so far as to say it isn’t a diagnosis at all.

It’s lazy psychology and there is something more complicated that is underlying and hasn’t been worked through enough to diagnose. That is a hill I will die on.

That being said, I think it’s gross that she’s decided to lean into her BPD diagnosis as an excuse for s__tty behavior instead of learning to control her temper and...

Not rare, but frustrating every time I see someone do that. Some take their Borderline diagnosis as permission to just walk all over everyone in their life.

You don’t need permission from anyone but you to distance yourself from a toxic person. So give yourself that permission as soon as you’re ready.

I see no indication that her behavior will improve any time soon. You can’t save her from herself, you can only save yourself from her.

Others focused on the pattern OP had finally recognized. Friends had left. Jobs had ended. Relationships had collapsed.

silvertwinz − My bestie was diagnosed with BPD and refused to be med compliant. Not supposed to be drinking alcohol on those meds at all.

Got very drunk with her husband and BIL. BIL made a joke & she FLIPPED out. Charged at the BIL, when her husband got brother out of the house, she...

She charged at the cops, stripped n__ed, and held onto the kitchen table when the cops got her clothed enough to arrest. She separated from the husband.

Got with an old boyfriend. She ended up so drunk her 5 year old son called 911. He said "my mommy is broken. come help. " Lost custody of both...

Got arrested again for beating the old boyfriend. I was getting phone calls 20-30 times a day, she sent Walmart orders to my apartment.

If I didn't respond to her calls, she would call my mom, my boyfriend, everyone. Just to keep tabs on me. Honey, save yourself.

I had to cut my bestie off cold because her behavior was more & more erratic, I felt it was a danger to myself to stay. I still worry about...

Straight-Career-996 − I’ve had not one but TWO ex-best friends with BPD. I knew straight away from your description that that’s what your friend has.

Both of my ex-friends really obviously needed professional help, but being a people pleaser with weak boundaries, I helped them with their constant relationship/friendship turmoil,

covering for their lying, cheating, comforting their midnight breakdowns, suicide threats, etc etc until I just couldn’t do it anymore.

Both of them were honestly amazing friends to me until the end, but at some point you just have to choose to protect your own peace.

The only way your friendship can continue is if she decides for herself that it was time to get help and actually put the work in. It feels like she’s...

Unfortunately you should probably choose to love her from afar.

Eastern_Bend7294 − Recently, she called saying her boyfriend “got physical” with her. I took it seriously and told my boyfriend, who happened to be with him.

At that point you knew she was a massive liar, so why would you even believe her. I eventually reached out because I couldn’t throw away 10 years. Even after...

Have some more self respect, because she is NOT a friend and not worthy of your time and energy. And her diagnosis' are not an excuse for how she behaves.

She is choosing not to properly manage them, and then it affects people around her. That is decisions that she's actively making. She doesn't care about others, only about herself.

I don’t want to punish her for struggling with her mental health. Her "struggling" is due to her own actions though.

By decisions she is actively making every single day. She doesn't want to get helped, or she'd do things differently.

She's happy in her own misery, that she has created herself. NTA And the boyfriend should stop holding onto the sunk cost fallacy.

It isn't healthy, and he is setting himself on fire to keep her warm.

Pineapple_Wagon − First remove her from find my location. There is nothing wrong with cutting someone out of your life especially if they refuse to seek help and will not...

I am going to say her making false accusations about experiencing SA/DV should have been the end of the friendship.

A lie like that can destroy someone's life as a false accusation can travel with them the rest of their lives. There is never a reason to make up a...

Put yourself first and end the friendship. Don't worry about her boyfriend or the friend group that's for them to figure it out. NTA

Fruitbatslipper − Girl… you are not her friend. You are her unpaid case manager and guard dog

Walking away does not mean OP hates Brittney. It does not mean she thinks Brittney is beyond help. It simply means ten years of friendship no longer outweigh the emotional cost of staying.

The bigger irony is that OP spent years wondering why everyone eventually left Brittney. Now she understands that she does not have to become the exception.

She can care about Brittney from a distance, protect her own privacy, remove her location access, and let the adults around Brittney make their own choices.

Sometimes protecting your peace is not betrayal. It is finally accepting that friendship cannot survive on one person’s patience alone.

Was OP finally setting a healthy boundary, or should ten years of friendship have earned Brittney one more chance?
