Mom Wants Everyone’s Kids Banned From the Pool Because Her Child Failed the Swim Test

in Social Issues

Summer activities are supposed to be a chance for kids to have fun, make friends, and enjoy new experiences.

But sometimes, instead of helping their children overcome challenges, some parents try to change the situation around them.

The original poster (OP) shared a story from summer camp where kids had to pass a swimming test before accessing the main pool.

While most children enjoyed all the available areas, one child was limited to the shallow sections after not passing.

Instead of encouraging her child to improve their swimming skills, the parent decided to ask other families to change the way their kids played.

Read on to see how another parent responded to the unexpected request.

Summer camp parent expects other children to avoid the main pool

Mom Wants Everyone’s Kids Banned From the Pool Because Her Child Failed the Swim Test
not the actual photo

'Nobody should be swimming?'

Its summer camp and several times a week they pile the kids onto a bus to

go swimming at a local pool. To be able to swim in the main pool the kids

have to take a swimming test. If they pass they get to use the main pool

plus the splash pad and the shallow pool area. If they don't then they are

restricted to the splash pad and shallow pool only.

The kids all take the test and a couple of them don't pass so they are

restricted. Everyone else is bouncing between all 3 of the areas so for the

most part everyone is playing together on and off the entire time.

But of course entitled mom who's kid didn't pass the test starts letting all

the parents at drop off know that they should tell their children not to go

in the main pool since her precious didn't pass the test. Its making their

child feel sad that they can't be with their friends in the main pool. Chef's

kiss to the parent who replied, 'Or you could teach him how to swim

because you had the same complaint last year.'

Sometimes parenting means protecting a child from disappointment, but it does not mean removing every situation where disappointment exists.

One of the most important lessons children learn is that other people can have different abilities, opportunities, and experiences without the world needing to change around them.

The OP’s story is not really about a swimming test. It is about how adults respond when their children face a limitation.

The camp created a clear and reasonable system: children who demonstrated stronger swimming skills received access to additional areas, while those who did not pass still had safe activities available.

The goal was not to exclude anyone; it was to keep children safe.

The conflict began when one parent tried to solve her child’s disappointment by asking everyone else to give up something they had earned.

A different perspective is that the mother may have been acting from a place of protectiveness.

Watching a child feel left out can be painful, especially when friends are doing something they cannot do yet.

Some parents naturally want to remove the source of sadness immediately.

However, there is a difference between supporting a child emotionally and teaching them that other people must adjust whenever they feel upset.

A healthier approach would be helping the child process the disappointment while encouraging them to improve the skill they need.

This perspective explains why the response from the other parent was so effective.

Instead of criticizing the child or making the situation embarrassing, the comment pointed toward the actual solution: learning to swim.

The child’s problem was not that friends were allowed to enjoy the main pool.

The problem was that the child had not yet reached the requirement for that activity.

It is also worth noting that the child should not become the target of frustration.

The issue was not that the child failed the test.

Many children need more time, practice, or confidence before they can swim independently.

The responsibility belongs to the adults helping them navigate that experience.

Life will constantly present moments where children see someone else achieving something they cannot do yet.

A friend may ride a bike sooner, make a team, earn a higher grade, or master a new skill first.

Those moments can either become sources of resentment or opportunities for growth.

Good parenting does not mean making sure a child never feels disappointed.

It means teaching them that disappointment is temporary, skills can improve, and other people’s success does not take anything away from their own journey.

See what others had to share with OP:

These commenters agreed that teaching the child to swim is essential because it is a safety skill that could save a life

Successful_Image3354 − "Teach him how to swim because. .." Because it

could be a matter of life or death.

Hot-Relief-4024 − 😆😆😆 “teach him how to swim because you had the

same complaint last year” is the best advice

Salt-Lavishness-7560 − Bless the mom who told her to get her kid swim

lessons because that’s what was going through my mind.   I can’t think of a

more important life skill. This isn’t just about having fun, this is about safety.

These Redditors criticized the parent for avoiding responsibility and enabling the child instead of helping them overcome a basic challenge

bibkel − She is the mom that will dumb down everything to allow her child

to rise to the challenge, and get a reward. She is doing the child no favors,

then will SK why her child has not found a good job, can’t manage college

and is still at home. Blame society and enable failure.

This all began with her not teaching a vital life skill, then after experiencing

natural consequences actively chose to do nothing to improve her child’s

experience.

No1PoundPup − Some people don't want to take responsibility for their short comings.

Ginger_Libra − We need to bring back shaming.

This group emphasized that swimming is more than recreation

Plantron1 − Learning to swim dramatically reduces the chances of drowning

EntertainerFree9654 − It's a Jewish commandment: The Talmud in

Kiddushin 29a outlines a father's duties to his son, including Torah

education, marriage, and teaching a trade, often citing the requirement to

teach them to swim. Rashi explains that this last duty ensures the child can

survive potential shipwrecks, highlighting the emphasis on practical survival skills.

These commenters shared experiences with swim tests and lessons

montybo2 − My overnight summer camp had swim tests and results were

color coded. Red was worst, Yellow intermediate, and White was basically

good to go. White had full freedom at the pool or lake, yellow and red

needed lifejackets in certain sections. If you didn't make white, you had

mandatory swim lessons until you could get white on the test.

At 8 years old, i thought I could swim but they gave me red after the test. I

was pissed but it was how it is. Did the lessons, made white, and that was it.

Its almost like a week of lessons could prepare a kid to swim no problem.

WhoWhatWhereWhy_7497 − I’ve been trying to get my 7 yo to become a

proficient swimmer for the last 4 years. Expensive lessons and everything.

This kid is so flipping stubborn and will not engage with things until he is

damn good and ready, so although he has some skills, he still wouldn’t be

able to pass a swim test.

All that to say, sometimes it’s not so easy as just having access to swimming

lessons. HOWEVER, this mom is a nutbar if she thinks everyone else not

swimming is an appropriate answer. I would personally use the situation to

motivate my kid to practice swimming.

This group supported the person who suggested swim lessons

MsMarisol2023 − If they’re already at the pool, why not enroll your kid in swim lessons? !?

Alarming_Paper_8357 − I would have loved to see the look on her face after that zinger!

WhichWitch9402 − Good on the parent that spoke up.

OP’s summer camp story highlights the difference between supporting a child and expecting everyone else to adjust for them.

When one child didn’t pass the swimming test, their parent reportedly tried to convince other families to keep their kids out of the main pool so their child wouldn’t feel left out.

Instead of turning the situation into a group problem, the better solution would be helping the child build confidence and improve their swimming skills.

Do you think OP’s fellow parent was being unreasonable, or should the other kids have been more considerate?

How would you handle a situation like this? Share your thoughts below.
