He Let His Coworker Think They Were Both Beginners at Skating, and It Backfired

For someone who had been skating since he could walk, the OP never thought of himself as particularly impressive on the ice. He played in a beer league, enjoyed skating, and had recently started taking a beginner figure skating class to improve his game. He was even a little embarrassed about the figure skating part, so he simply called it his “skating class.”

That harmless description caused a surprisingly messy misunderstanding at work.

One of his coworkers overheard him talking about the class and assumed he was learning how to skate from scratch. She admitted she had always wanted to learn but was too embarrassed to show up at a rink and be the worst skater there. Since she believed they were both beginners, she suggested they go together.

The OP agreed. He thought he was simply helping someone get comfortable with something he loved.

He did not realize how badly that decision would come back to haunt him.

AITA for hiding my skating ability, and for maybe leading on a coworker?

I’m in a beer league, and I’m nothing special. I’m not one to brag about anything, but I do love to be on the ice, and I try to better...

It took a lot of convincing, but I ended up doing it, and I found it was life changing for my game.I’m kind of embarrassed to call it my figure...

and now I have some coworkers who over heard me talk to my buddy about my skate class, and they think im just learning how to skate.

One of my coworkers confessed to me that they really want to learn how to skate, but they don’t want to go to a rink and be that worst person...

and that she’d feel better going to a rink, if we went together, since we are both beginners. I’m no beginner.

I said I’d go with her, without telling her that I’ve actually been skating since a was able to walk. BECAUSE I don’t your skill level should stop you from...

So we go skating, I match her pace, I tell her about how much fun I having. She says she’s having fun too, and wants to go again. Big win!

So we go to the again the next week. While i was getting some water, she falls. Not hard. I skate to her, help her up, and hold her hands...

Not in a weird way! I’m just skating backwards pulling her along helping her build her up confidence again. I didn’t think twice about it.

She texted me today, asking me if I’ve been skating for a while, because when she fell, I got to her super fast, and I was good at skating backwards.

I’m honest with her, and tell her I’ve been skating all my life. That sets her off.

Message after message about how I’m a lair, and I told her that I’m a beginner. And how she confided in me, about being insecure about skating, and how I...

I text back saying that I said I’m in a skating class, and I never said I was a beginner. All I did was agree to go to the rink...

She said she’s going to hr for harassment. I told her I did nothing, and I’m gay, so I wouldn’t want to do anything. I also tell her I’m not...

I do feel bad, because I did go out of my way to not tell her my skating experience, so she’d go to the rink with me. Also should I...

The Skating Lesson That Wasn’t Quite What She Thought

The OP had been skating for most of his life, but he never corrected his coworker’s assumption that he was also a beginner.

His reasoning was fairly innocent. He wanted her to realize that skating was fun and that being inexperienced shouldn’t stop anyone from getting on the ice. He figured that if she knew he was actually an experienced skater, she might become even more self-conscious.

So when they went to the rink, he deliberately stayed at her pace.

He chatted with her, encouraged her, and acted like the outing was simply two coworkers having fun while learning. She enjoyed herself enough that she wanted to go skating again the following week.

Then came the moment that exposed everything.

While the OP was getting some water, his coworker fell. She wasn’t seriously hurt, but he immediately skated over to help. He helped her up and held her hands while skating backward, gently pulling her along until she regained her confidence.

To him, it was completely natural.

To her, apparently, it was evidence.

Later, she messaged him and asked how long he’d actually been skating. She had noticed how quickly he reached her and how effortlessly he skated backward.

This time, he told her the truth.

He had been skating practically his entire life.

That revelation did not go well.

She Felt Misled

The coworker accused him of lying and said he had taken advantage of something she had confided in him about. She reminded him that she had specifically wanted to go skating because she believed they were both beginners.

The OP pushed back. Technically, he had never actually said, “I’m a beginner.” He had only said he was taking a skating class.

But there was an uncomfortable detail he couldn’t really escape.

He knew what she believed.

He knew that her belief was part of the reason she felt comfortable going with him.

And instead of correcting her, he allowed the misunderstanding to continue.

The situation became even more complicated when she accused him of using skating as an excuse to get a date with her.

He denied that completely. He told her he was gay and had no interest in dating coworkers.

She responded by threatening to report him to HR for harassment.

That is where the situation became much bigger than a skating lesson.

The OP began wondering whether he had actually crossed a line. Should he have told her from the beginning that he was an experienced skater? Should he have mentioned that he was gay? Had his attempt to make her comfortable accidentally become misleading?

Where the Boundary Actually Was

Psychologists often distinguish between an intentional lie and an omission that allows someone to maintain a false assumption. The distinction matters because people can technically tell the truth while still creating a misleading impression.

Psychology Today’s articles on lying and deception

That seems particularly relevant here. The OP didn’t invent a fake skating history. He really was taking a class. But once his coworker explicitly explained that she wanted to go because she believed they were both beginners, he had enough information to realize the assumption mattered to her.

A simple correction could have prevented the entire mess: “I’m actually not a beginner. I’ve skated most of my life, but I’m taking the class to improve. I’d still love to go with you.”

Then she could have decided whether she was comfortable going.

That doesn’t make the coworker’s reaction reasonable, though. Threatening an HR complaint over an awkward misunderstanding is a significant escalation, particularly when there was no indication of unwanted sexual conduct or romantic pressure in the story.

The bigger lesson is that good intentions don’t always excuse withholding information that someone is using to make a decision. Sometimes the kindest thing is simply to let another person choose with all the relevant facts.

These are the responses from Reddit users:

Several commenters pointed out that he knowingly allowed her to believe they were both beginners, even after she specifically explained that this was why she felt comfortable skating with him.

Slow-Repair-8117 − You knew she thought you were a beginner and deliberately didn't correct her

Designer_Thought2907 − ESH, you should have told her, but threatening harassment?

Lovable_Lobstarr − You should’ve told her you weren’t actually a beginner, but threatening harassment over this is wild. edit: ESH (forgot to give my verdict)

JoelMole03 − I mean…you did kinda lie but also I don’t think it’s a big enough deal to go to HR about? Did it feel like a date? It doesn’t...

Mean_Introduction543 − YTA I can see your thought process here and going to HR for harassment is definitely too far. But she explicitly said that you were a beginner and...

It would be different if you had only mentioned you’re taking a class and then she said she wanted to go but she explicitly gave you an opportunity to correct...

You should have just said “oh, I’m actually not a beginner at all I’m just taking the class to improve my skills but I’d still be more than happy to...

giantbrownguy − ESH. Less so you, but when she expressed her insecurity, you should have been upfront. She’s blown this out of proportion and is acting outrageous.

captfattymcfatfat − Anyone who threatens to go to hr and s__ew with people professional lives over petty non harassment stuff is not worth anything

Others thought the HR threat was completely disproportionate. Helping a coworker after she fell, encouraging her on the ice, and spending time skating together doesn’t automatically make something a date.

Swirlyflurry − YTA It’s weird that you didn’t correct her from the beginning. You knew the reason she wanted to go with you is because she thought you were a...

SummitJunkie7 − YTA - she specifically said she was nervous to go to a rink and would feel better going together *because you're both beginners. * So not only did...

I understand you were worried the truth would discourage her from skating and you were wanting her to feel comfortable to try it. But if the truth would change things...

I'm actually not a total beginner, I've been skating all my life, but I'm taking a class because everyone always has more to learn. I'd love to go to the...

As for the dating thing - if you suspected a romantic vibe to her request to skate together, it would have been both kind and wise to clear that up...

I've certainly spent time outside of work with co-workers as friends and never bothered to explicitly label it as "not a date", nor are you required to disclose your orientation...

Document everything, if you have texts or emails planning the skating outing save them (though if they seem flirty they may not play in your favor), and make a report...

You would never date a co-worker and had no idea it was interpreted as a date, and the moment you learned she had interpreted it that way you wanted to...

sugarlumens − NTA. You were just trying to be a supportive friend and get her comfortable on the ice. She is projecting her own embarrassment and crush onto you because...

Threatening to go to HR because a gay coworker helped her up after a fall is completely unhinged main character energy.

The OP’s intentions seem more supportive than sinister. He wanted someone who was nervous about skating to discover that it could actually be fun. But he also knew she had misunderstood his experience and chose not to correct her.

That was the mistake.

He didn’t need to announce his entire personal life or sexuality before going skating with a coworker. But once she made her assumptions clear, honesty would have been the cleaner path.

As for the HR threat, that’s another question entirely. Was this a genuine workplace boundary issue, or simply an awkward misunderstanding that got blown completely out of proportion?
