He Worked 50 Hours a Week, Then His Girlfriend’s Family Expected Him to Spend Every Weekend Doing Hard Labor

At 18 or 19, the last thing most people want to hear after working more than 50 hours a week is that their weekend plans involve chopping wood, stacking firewood, clearing brush, and hauling equipment around a remote family property.

That was exactly what happened to this Redditor.

His girlfriend, Katie, came from a family of serious hunters who owned a large piece of land they casually called “the farm.” At first, he was encouraged to think of their weekends there as something fun, almost like camping. But once he started going regularly, he discovered that the “camping” came with very little relaxing and a whole lot of unpaid physical labor.

He eventually reached his limit after one particularly exhausting weekend.

'AITAH for refusing to help my girlfriends family with hard physical labor every weekend?'

This is something that took place about 20 years ago. I am no longer dating this person. I was 18 or 19 at the time.

I had a girlfriend, her name was Katie. At the time I was a welder, I worked 50+ hours per week. My girlfriend, of course lived with her family.

They were BIG hunters, I WAS NOT, I didnt hunt at all. They had some sizeable land that was a little ways out of town, they called it "the farm".

Through out summer, they would go down most weekends and prepare hunting plots and then throughout winter they'd go and cut firewood for their wood burning stove back home, among...

When I first got with her, they acted like it was a fun exciting thing to down there, like camping... and yeah, it was kind of like camping.. just without...

The reality is, it was a s__tty cabin that didnt have enough space for everyone, had s__tty climate control, and the activities included... work, work, and more work.

Her dad had something wrong, I think it was a hernia, he wasn't able to get too crazy with physical labor. He was technically "disabled" though he got around fine....

We'd chop wood, stack it, clear brush, put up and take down equipment like blinds or tree stands, and whatever else. We also bailed hay once, square bails, which is...

The last time I went, I happened to be the only other guy that went aside from her dad. We were getting firewood. I ended up spending the entire weekend...

We drove back to the house, where her brother was home. We were all hanging out, it was getting late, truck was still full of wood out front. I was...

Next thing I know, her dad asks me if I'm ever going to go unload the truck. Doesn't say anything to her brother who was in the next room, doesn't...

My girlfriend got visibly uncomfortable, not for me, but because she knew her dad was judging me pretty harshly for not already getting it done. I had to work that...

But I did it, i went out, unloaded the whole truck by myself, I was very annoyed about the situation. After that I stopped going to "the farm". I was...

It ended up becoming a major point of contention for us that I was never able to go and they of course took it as me being lazy and disrespectful....

Maybe I was lazy and disrepectful? I dont know. I just got to where I thought it was complete b__lshit and basically slave labor, I didnt want to be a...

The “Fun” Family Weekends Quickly Became Hard Labor

The Redditor was working as a welder and regularly putting in more than 50 hours a week. He didn’t hunt and had little personal interest in the family’s activities, but he was willing to spend time with his girlfriend and her family.

During the summer, the family prepared hunting plots. In the winter, they returned to the property to cut and haul firewood. There was also brush clearing, moving hunting equipment, setting up and taking down blinds and tree stands, and even baling hay.

The family had several men who could help with the work, including Katie’s brother and brother-in-law. Her father had a medical condition that limited how much physical labor he could do, so he generally operated a tractor or handled whatever tasks he could manage.

The young boyfriend, meanwhile, found himself doing plenty of the heavy lifting.

One weekend finally pushed him over the edge.

He was the only other able-bodied man who had gone to the property with Katie’s father. They spent the weekend processing firewood. By the time they returned home, the truck was loaded so high with wood that the stack was above the roof.

He assumed someone would help unload it.

After all, Katie’s brother was already home.

Instead, everyone settled in for the evening. It was around 9 p.m., and the Redditor had to be at work at 6 the next morning.

Then Katie’s father asked him a simple question: Was he ever going to unload the truck?

Nobody asked Katie’s brother.

Nobody offered to help.

So the exhausted teenager went back outside and unloaded the entire truck himself.

That was the moment something changed.

He Stopped Going to “The Farm”

The Redditor was angry, but he didn’t immediately confront anyone.

Instead, he stopped going.

Whenever another weekend trip came up, he suddenly had something else to do. He tried to make his excuses as politely as possible, but the message was clear: he was no longer volunteering for the family labor weekends.

Katie’s family didn’t see it that way.

To them, his refusal apparently looked lazy and disrespectful. The issue became a recurring source of tension between him and Katie.

Looking back two decades later, he still wondered whether he had been unreasonable.

Maybe he should have helped more.

Maybe he should have spoken up rather than quietly finding excuses.

But there was another possibility: perhaps he had simply realized that spending his only free time doing exhausting work for someone else’s family was not the relationship obligation he had signed up for.

That distinction matters.

What Psychology Says About Boundaries and Resentment

Psychologists often distinguish between healthy helping and behavior that creates resentment. The American Psychological Association has discussed how setting boundaries can help protect relationships and reduce stress, particularly when people feel pressured to continually accommodate others. American Psychological Association

In this situation, the problem wasn’t necessarily that the family asked him to help. Families often work together, and helping out occasionally can be a perfectly normal part of spending time together.

The problem was the expectation.

He was already working extremely long hours, had no interest in hunting, and was repeatedly spending his weekends doing physically demanding work. When he finally stopped volunteering, the family interpreted his boundary as a character flaw.

That’s where resentment can grow. If someone feels that their contribution has become an obligation rather than a choice, even perfectly ordinary requests can start to feel exploitative.

The Redditor might have handled the situation more directly, but he was still allowed to decide how he spent his limited free time.

See what others had to share with OP:

Vandreeson − NTA. They were using you for free labor, and you let them do it until you wised up.

SokeSleezy − I don't even know why you went back out to empty the truck but i realized you were young and were trying not to be rude.

But also at that age a smart remark about the brother wouldn't of been out of character cuz at that age and now i definitely would of said something like...

fawningandconning − Why are you still thinking about this or even remember it? NTA

jd807 − Definitely NTA, Not allowing yourself to be walked all over is always viewed as ‘disrespectful’ by those doing the walking.

_Alabama_Man − NTA You were working a lot of hours and when you wanted to spend time with your girlfriend you had to put in time like you were Jacob...

Round-Leg-3665 − I don’t get why everyone is shitting on OP! Man, it’s an entertaining story and it’s funny hearing other people’s takes on whether someone is the a__hole or...

tryintobgood − Why do people keep posting here when they know there's no chance of them being AH? More suited to r/EntitledPeople

Chance-Contract-1290 − NTA. They weren't entitled to your free labor just because you happened to be dating a member of their family.

dirkdiggler2011 − Look. I already chopped all the wood and plowed. .your daughter.

Serious_Pea42 − I can't for all the love in the world imagine doing this to my children's partners.

The Redditor was young, and perhaps he could have handled the situation better. Instead of quietly avoiding the farm, he could have told Katie and her family that he simply didn’t want to spend every weekend doing heavy labor.

But that doesn’t make him lazy.

Dating someone doesn’t automatically make you unpaid staff for their family. Helping occasionally is one thing. Being expected to spend your rare free weekends doing exhausting work, then being criticized when you finally stop, is another.

Sometimes the moment you stop doing something for free is the moment people suddenly discover how much they valued you doing it.

And maybe that was the real lesson from “the farm.”
