Parents Turn Daughter’s Childhood Into a Never-Ending RV Adventure, But She Wants Out

For some people, traveling the world sounds like a dream.

But what happens when that lifestyle is chosen for you before you are old enough to understand what it means?

One young woman grew up living in an RV after her parents decided that a nomadic lifestyle would be best for the family.

While they saw adventure and freedom, she experienced something very different: a lack of privacy, limited independence, and years of feeling like her own wishes were ignored.

Now that she is 18, she is struggling with the reality of wanting a more traditional life while feeling trapped by the choices her parents made for her.

18-year-old reflects on growing up nomadic and feeling trapped by her parents’ lifestyle choices

not the actual photo

'I’m the kid of one of those traveling rv families online and I hate them for it every day?'

My parents decided when I was only around seven years old, far to young

to get an opinion on anything to pack us up and move into an rv to travel

around the us. My dad works online and my mom makes content online,

she’s not huge by any means but big enough that we get recognized

sometimes and big enough that i’ve had a camera shoved in my face for as

long as I can remember. For my privacy’s sake I won’t say anything else on

that and i’m using a throwaway account because i’ve gotten enough

attention already and i’m sick of it.

I sleep in a tiny bunk bed that I outgrew years ago and the other bunk is the

only space I have to put anything I own. I don’t even have a room just a

curtain and thank god i’m an only child or else I would have to share the

small space I have already. I was homeschooled for most of my education

and then switched to online school at my own insistence for high school.

I’m an 18 year old girl, I don’t have a single friend in person because the

longest i’ve ever stayed anywhere is a month. I don’t have a job and no way

to get one because of not being stationary unless I find one online which

also mean I have no way to move out and get away from them.

I’ve had conversations with them about all of this countless times and they

are so delusional and genuinely believe that “a nomadic existence is the

best way to live” so why would I never need anything else. I hate them for

treating me like some pet they can just drag along in their plans rather than

their child. I hate traveling, I don’t like heat, I hate dealing with bugs, and

i’m so sick of hiking. I can’t wait for the day that I finally figure out a way to

get away from them with their mornings hikes and cameras in my face. I’ve

traveled around the us yeah but god forbid I want to have a normal life, go

the college or maybe even makes some friends? That’s asking to much.

Family lifestyles that appear adventurous from the outside can feel very different to the children growing up inside them.

Traveling full-time, homeschooling, and creating online content may offer flexibility and unique experiences, but they also involve trade-offs.

When parents make those choices on behalf of a child for many years, it is understandable that the child may eventually question whether their own needs were given equal consideration.

According to this account, the poster spent most of her childhood traveling the United States in an RV after her parents adopted a nomadic lifestyle.

She describes living in a small bunk with only a curtain for privacy, being homeschooled before transitioning to online high school, and rarely staying in one place long enough to develop lasting friendships.

She also explains that her mother’s online content creation meant growing up with cameras frequently pointed at her and occasionally being recognized by strangers.

Now eighteen, she says she wants what many young adults consider ordinary goals: attending college, finding stable work, building in-person friendships, and living independently.

Despite repeatedly expressing those wishes, she feels her parents remain convinced that their lifestyle is inherently the best choice for everyone in the family.

An important perspective is that gratitude for unusual experiences and frustration over unmet developmental needs are not mutually exclusive.

A child can appreciate having seen remarkable places while also mourning the loss of stability, privacy, and a consistent peer group.

Wanting a permanent home, a bedroom with a door, or friendships that last longer than a few weeks does not diminish the value of travel. It simply reflects different emotional needs.

Another issue raised by this account is privacy.

As family content creation has become more common, experts have increasingly discussed the importance of obtaining meaningful consent as children mature.

A young child cannot fully understand the long-term implications of growing up online, but an older teenager may reasonably want greater control over how much of their life is shared publicly.

Feeling uncomfortable with constant filming does not necessarily reject a parent’s career; it reflects a desire for personal boundaries.

The broader lesson is that parenting involves balancing family dreams with a child’s evolving individuality.

A lifestyle that fulfills adults may not continue meeting a teenager’s emotional, educational, or social needs.

As children become adults, they deserve increasing influence over the direction of their own lives.

Wanting stability after years of constant movement is not a rejection of one’s parents, it is a natural expression of becoming an independent person with goals, preferences, and a future that belongs to them.

Here’s the input from the Reddit crowd:

These Redditors suggested practical escape routes such as runaway support programs

gumbyrocks − 1800runaway provides a list of programs that will provide

housing and supportive services. We help people like you every day.

BeignetsNSugar − If you don’t feel ready for college have you thought

about [JobCorp? ](https://www. jobcorps. gov). You can get training to

work a skilled job and later go to a community college and build up your

education until you can go to a 4 year university (if you want to eventually

go that route)

essenceofmeaning − Can I recommend the restaurant industry? Pretty

much everywhere is hiring since the pandemic. Want to talk to people?

Work front of house (host, server, busser, bartender) don’t really wanna

talk, or just talk to a few people?

Work back of house (dishwasher, prep, line cook, fry cook) entry level

positions, easy to cross train & you don’t have to worry about being strange

cuz everyone is a little odd.

steezMcghee − I think Job Corps might be your best option. You will make

friends, make connections, and hopefully get out of it with a job and maybe

potential roommate to get own spot.

These commenters believed the parents were exploiting and isolating the poster for content and income

scrubberducky93 − This comes across as a form of child n__lect to me. They

are 100% socially isolating you to only having a relationship with them. (

Very unhealthy). Mom is also using you as a content piece and not as her

child, so she can continue to make her content.

If you left she would, I assume, lose the ability to make the same content

she makes which would therefore potentially cause her to lose income.

That means they have a conflict of interest in keeping you with them or

letting you move out as the decision would impact their way of life.

Them convincing you that you should live this way seems like manipulation

so they don't lose part of their income. .. I'm sorry this is happening to you.

You deserve to have a life outside of them with your own relationships.

tushshtup − They owe you proceeds as an unpaid child actor

These Redditors disagreed over military service, with one presenting it as a route to stability and education while the other urged the poster to avoid it

newusername1312 − Do not join the military. There are better alternatives.

SonMiRaSeattle − Have you considered joining the military? Sets you up

where you get a steady paycheck, money for college. You don't need to

worry about rent, health care, dental, etc. I grew up very sheltered, and it

gave me time to figure who I was as a person.

What her parents saw as freedom and adventure became years of isolation, lost privacy, and a childhood built around someone else’s dream.

Readers may understand why constant travel appealed to the adults, but an 18-year-old wanting friends, stability, education, and a room of her own is hardly unreasonable.

The deepest problem is that her repeated concerns were dismissed rather than taken seriously.

What do you think? Did her parents confuse an unconventional lifestyle with good parenting, and what practical first step could help her begin building an independent life?
