Woman Kicks Out Sister After Six Years Of Free Living And Family Turns Against Her

Helping family can be an act of love, but long-term support can become complicated when one person feels taken for granted. A favor that starts with good intentions can create resentment when expectations, responsibilities, and boundaries are never properly balanced.

The original poster (OP) shared how she allowed her younger sister to move in years ago while she was in college, expecting it to be temporary. However, years later, her sister had graduated, started working, and still relied on OP for housing without contributing financially or helping around the home.

After discovering that her sister’s supposed financial struggles were being covered by their parents, OP reached a breaking point. Now, after asking her sister to leave, OP is facing criticism from family members who believe she was too harsh. Scroll down to see how Reddit responded to this sibling conflict.

not the actual photo

'AITAH for kicking my little sister out of my house because I got sick of her?'

Some background, 6 years ago my sister (21F) asked if she could live with me (26F)

because I was close to the college she studied at and I had a spare bedroom in a 3 bedroom home.

She mentioned at the time she wouldn't be able help with the bills.

She worked part time min wage and all her money goes towards her car note.

At the time I didn't mind and wanted to help so I welcomed her with open arms.

Fast forward 5 years later, she's now 26, out of college, been working as a nurse for over a year, but still lives with me.

Asked her about her future plans and she tells me she needs a bit more time to get back on her feet as she's apparently "struggling" due to her student...

I thought that was strange because she eats out almost everyday, buys crap from amazon all the time, buys coubtless kpop albums and goes to concerts.

But you know what, fine. I'll give her benefit of the doubt. She has a bf (35M) that maybe helps pay for it all.

I suggested she at least help with some bills if she's staying.

Maybe pay for the internet as she's always on her computer playing her mmos or watching kdramas when she's home.

I'm not asking for much. I do well on my own.

But now that she has a job as a nurse, I want her to at least start pulling her weight in some shape or form.

She can't do that, because again, she can barely afford her student and car loan.

What really started to set things off was an old cast iron skillet she ruined after she put it in the dishwasher.

I was mad and demanded she fix or replace it. She refused and says I'm overreacting over an honest mistake. It's just a pan.

It was little stuff like it that kept piling on. Her leaving the bathrooms a mess. Leaving the kitchen a mess.

She refused to do a single chore except wash her own clothes and fix her bed.

Her excuse, she's too tired after working the graveyard shift. Ok. Fine. I let it go each time because the attitude she gives me is not worth the headache.

Then one day, frustrated after my sister messed up my washing machine (she decided to wash a bunch of her shoes and boots and claims it was already broken 🙄).

I went to my dad to vent and ask for advice on how to navigate the situation.

I bring up that my sister's car and student loans during the conversation and my dad gave me a confused look.

Then he tells me that he and my mom have been paying for those the entire time?????

Not only that, I find out from my sister's bf that he doesn't really pay for her lifestyle either.

In fact they take turns footing the bill whenever they go out and that he's been trying to get her to cut back on her spending on Genshin Impact and...

I was infuriated. I confronted my sister about all of it but then she just gives me the same attitude like always and tells me to relax.

That I'm blowing it all out of proportion. I tell her either go live with your bf or start paying me rent if you want to keep living with me.

She goes "why do I need to pay you rent when all I do is stay in my room and sleep. You make a lot of money. It shouldn't be...

I was seeing red at that point and yelled at her to get out of my house and gave her 2 weeks to clean out her bedroom or I'm throwing...

My mom and dad heard about it now they are pissed at me saying I went overboard.

That I should be nicer and let her stay because she's my little sister. My relatives also found out and I've been painted as the villain.

Now here I am unable to sleep because of it. AITAH?

08/10/26 Update: My sister hasn't come back since I kicked her out. No replies on messages and my calls go straight to voicemail when I try to call her.

As far as I know, she's still staying with her bf and his parents.

He came over on the weekend to pick up her things and I gave him the formal notice. I pray I won't have to do anything beyond that.

It makes me a little anxious not hearing a single word from her.

Tried talking to my parents into cutting her off financially but they're still not having it. As for the rest of my family, I'm tired.

I've always been the disappointment despite my successes so idk why I keep wasting my energy trying to please everybody.

I finally went on a blocking spree as recommended by a bunch of you and stepped off social media for a few days to give myself peace of mind.

Anyway I really didn't expect this post to gain this much attention.

I was in a really bad headspace that night and needed to get s__t off my chest hoping people tell me I did the right thing before I ended up...

I'm still feeling heartbroken about it all because I really do care about my sister and still want a close relationship with her.

I'm feeling waaay better now nonetheless so thank you everyone so much that's been kind supportive and giving me helpful tips.

Family often inspires people to make sacrifices, especially when someone they love needs support. But generosity can become complicated when a temporary favor quietly turns into a long-term expectation, leaving one person feeling responsible for another adult’s choices.

In this story, the OP was not angry because her sister needed help. Six years earlier, she willingly opened her home because she wanted to support her younger sibling.

The frustration developed because the original arrangement never evolved as circumstances changed. Her sister went from being a struggling college student to a working professional, yet the expectations remained the same.

OP continued providing housing, utilities, and household stability while her sister contributed little and dismissed concerns. The emotional breaking point was not one ruined pan or one messy room; it was years of feeling taken for granted while being told that her support was simply expected.

A different perspective is that the sister may have genuinely struggled with the transition into adulthood. Student loans, car expenses, and demanding nursing shifts can create real financial pressure. Moving out after years of relying on family can also feel intimidating. However, financial stress does not remove personal responsibility.

The important issue is not whether the sister was struggling, but whether she was making meaningful efforts to become independent. Spending freely on entertainment while refusing basic contributions likely made OP feel that her kindness was being exploited.

Family therapists often explain that healthy relationships require clear boundaries, even between relatives.

Psychologist Nedra Glover Tawwab explains that boundaries help people communicate what they are willing to give and prevent resentment from building when one person repeatedly overextends themselves. She emphasizes that saying no does not mean someone lacks love; it means they are recognizing their own limits.

This perspective helps explain why OP’s decision feels emotionally complicated. She is not rejecting her sister as a person. In fact, the update shows that she still cares deeply and worries about losing their relationship. The pain comes from the conflict between wanting to protect her sister and needing to protect her own peace.

The parents’ reaction also reflects a common family dynamic: when one person finally enforces a boundary, others sometimes focus on the discomfort of the change rather than the years of imbalance that came before it. They may see the eviction as harsh while overlooking how long OP had already been carrying the burden.

The healthiest outcome may not be permanent separation but a reset. If the relationship continues, it needs a new foundation where support is offered by choice rather than obligation. Helping someone through a difficult season is an act of love. Allowing someone to avoid responsibility indefinitely can damage both people.

The larger lesson is that family loyalty does not require unlimited sacrifice. Sometimes the most loving thing someone can do is stop making life comfortable enough for another adult to avoid growing. Boundaries can hurt in the short term, but they can also create the space needed for healthier relationships in the future.

Here’s what the community had to contribute:

These commenters agreed the sister was taking advantage and needed to learn responsibility

TBvunza98 − NTA. Your parents are pissed because they're the next caretakers for her. She's beenn taking advantage of you for years.

Honestly, YTA for letting it go this long. She should've been out years ago.

Oellaatje − You didn't go overboard, your sister has had it very easy until now.

Your parents are enabling this bad behaviour, and unless you get her out, she won't grow up and become more responsible.

Stick to your guns, don't let them pressure you into backing down, and as soon as she's gone get your locks changed,

tell your neighbours she no longer lives there, and sit down and figure out how much you want from a new roommate, and get yourself a new roommate.

Sea_Veterinarian6539 − My brother (my only sibling) is dead and I’d give almost anything to have him here just one more day. But this?

Nah. NTA, your sister has never learnt responsibility, she’s been lying to you for 6 years and living her best life.

Ofc she has to pay rent, no landlord isn’t not going to charge rent because all you do is sleep in a room.

You did the right thing, if your parents think you went overboard they can pay for her rent and for a cleaner to clean up after her.

These Redditors criticized the family’s pressure and suggested they take responsibility instead

eldarwen9999 − NTA and it's so kind and refreshing of your family to open their home to her.

Tell them you'll pass on their names to little sister to move in with

Suitable-Lawyer-9397 − She's a spoiled brat ~ tell your family members this is their opportunity to house her and be blessed with her presence!

You could also add you need a roommate to help with your bills due to replacing your washer, etc. You can no longer afford to be so generous.

jmidnightw − Kick her out. And change the Wi-Fi password RIGHT NOW so she can't access what she refuses to pay for. Do you have a best or something like...

You could set the thermometer to freezing when you're not home too. ..

Is she can't help with electricity, she doesn't get the privilege of warmth 🤷🏼‍♀️ she's a n__ty human. NTA

These users emphasized protecting the homeowner legally and setting firm boundaries

PsychologicalNose197 − Technically you need to give her written notice and do a formal eviction if she doesn't leave.

Can't just throw her stuff out the door. Just to protect yourself legally.

Unfortunately it's come to this, don't let family pressure you to maintain a lazy and entitled grown up.

Routine-Horse-1419 − It's YOUR house. Period. She's an adult and needs to learn that paying bills is a part of being an adult.

She's taken advantage of you long enough. Don't back down and don't let your parents sway you. NTA OP.

This commenter shared a similar experience with an adult child struggling with gaming and avoiding responsibilities

deathboyuk − I really feel this one. I have, to my great sadness, experienced quite similar to this with my son (minus the attitude).

He's a great kid, but doing absolutely nothing besides being hooked on video games.

I feel responsible for this as we're a big gaming household (it's my career and my passion) but anything I ask him to do to contribute

minimal things like putting the bins out and loading the dishwasher (both of which take an entire 5 minutes apiece) get ignored.

I used to think gaming addiction was an invention of the press to demonise the industry, but reading further into it, while "addiction" may not be the right word,

when you're getting all of your dopamine from playing games, you don't feel very inclined to do other real-world things.

I guess most people feel this (who wouldn't want to just play all day?) but we're able to curb it and fulfil the things we need to do in our...

and apportion the right time and effort to our free time.

For other folks, especially if they grew up with gaming as a big part of their lives, this can be a hard cycle to break out of.

From my side, I've taken back consoles that were mine that he borrowed and refuse to support him gaming in any way going forward.

It started to feel like giving vodka to an a__oholic and while I can't pull him out of the hole he's in, I can try to help and STOP supporting...

All of which is to say that the disrespect and laziness may have an underpinning reason

that your sister may find extremely difficult to overcome on her own BUT you are not her parent and you don't have this responsibility.

If like with us, you've taken on a moocher who's adding to your burden and not even paying lip service to helping out,

then getting cut off is a very reasonable (to my mind) consequence for that person to learn, and you are strongly NTA.

I read that your culture places a heavy emphasis on supporting family, but as others have stated - so what are the OTHER family members doing?

This isn't on you. I hope you're both able to come out of this in a healthy way, but she's likely got a real journey ahead of her.

ETA: I say "kid" but my son is of adult age and needs to embrace the responsibilities of his life like one.

This Redditor felt the situation was obvious and strongly supported the poster’s decision

rheannahh − Girl why are you even posting this? Obviously NTA.

Do you think the older sister waited too long to set limits, or was asking her sister to leave unfair? Should family support come with a deadline? Share your thoughts below!
