Her Best Friend of 15 Years Refused to Attend Her Wedding Because She Was Marrying a Woman

in Social Issues

For years, OP thought she knew exactly where she stood with one of her closest friends. They had been inseparable since they were around 11 years old, long before college, careers, relationships, or wedding plans entered the picture. So when OP got engaged to the woman she loved, she naturally expected that longtime friend to be standing beside her as a bridesmaid.

Instead, she received a message that turned years of friendship upside down.

OP is getting married next April and had asked three of her closest friends to be bridesmaids. One was her childhood best friend, someone who had known her since she was a kid. Because they lived in different states, OP mailed her bridesmaid invitation as a surprise.

The response was anything but celebratory.

Her friend explained that she did not support OP marrying a woman and would not attend the wedding. She framed her position around her religious beliefs and the familiar idea of “loving the sinner but hating the sin.”

For OP, that distinction offered very little comfort.

She had already spent years dealing with judgment from her father and stepmother after coming out. Her friend knew exactly how painful that experience had been. OP had trusted her with those feelings and believed she was one of the people in her life who genuinely understood.

'Best friend of 15 years tells me she cant attend my wedding?'

I need to vent for a second. Im getting married next April to the love of my life, and I couldn’t be more excited.

I asked my three best friends to be my bridesmaids (longest friend, college roommate, post college roommate).

My longest friend (since we were around 11 years old) lives in another state so I mailed hers to her as a surprise.

She sent me this text last night letting me know that she doesn’t support the fact that I’m marrying a woman and will not be in attendance at my wedding.

I’m incredibly hurt by this on multiple levels. This “love the sinner hate the sin” mindset is extremely hurtful and does not constitute unconditional love.

These are the same beliefs my dad and stepmom have held since I came out, and it’s already been painful enough to deal with their judgement.

I didn’t realize one of my closest most trusted people secretly felt the same way even after having met my partner and knowing I was gay for over three years,...

I feel lied to and honestly have felt sick to my stomach since reading this.

I’ve already responded to let her know how hurtful this is and that I appreciate her being honest and telling me now, but that our friendship will not be able...

I’m trying to focus on the fact that I’m glad she told me now so that I don’t have to keep people like this in my life.

But I feel incredibly blind sighted and betrayed. There really is no hate like Christian love :/. Thanks all for letting me vent 🫶🏻

Now she was discovering that the same person apparently held similar beliefs.

That realization hurt more than simply losing a wedding guest.

OP felt betrayed because her friend had known she was gay for more than three years. She had met OP’s partner. She had heard about the difficulties with OP’s parents. Yet she had apparently kept her true feelings hidden until the wedding made those beliefs impossible to ignore.

OP responded honestly. She told her friend that she appreciated her being upfront, but that she could not continue the friendship if this was how she viewed her relationship.

Then she wished her the best.

It was a painful decision, but OP also recognized something important. At least she found out before the wedding rather than discovering years later that someone she trusted had never truly accepted the most important part of her life.

And that distinction matters.

The issue wasn’t simply whether someone attended a wedding. It was whether OP could feel completely safe and celebrated around someone who believed her marriage was fundamentally wrong.

Why This Hurt More Than a Missed Wedding

The emotional weight here goes beyond a declined invitation.

When someone you’ve known since childhood rejects something central to your identity, it can make you question the entire history of the relationship. OP wasn’t just losing a bridesmaid. She was grieving the version of her best friend she thought she knew.

The American Psychological Association explains that prejudice and discrimination based on sexual orientation can become significant sources of stress for lesbian, gay, and bisexual people, while social support can be an important source of protection.

That helps explain why OP’s friend’s message landed so heavily. This wasn’t a stranger making an insensitive comment. It came from someone OP had trusted enough to confide in about previous rejection.

Research from The Trevor Project similarly finds that LGBTQ+ young people who experience strong social support report better mental-health outcomes, while rejection and lack of acceptance can contribute to additional stress.

In other words, OP wasn’t being overly sensitive because she wanted her best friend to attend her wedding. She was reacting to the loss of someone she believed was part of her support system.

And sometimes the hardest part of growing up is realizing that history alone doesn’t guarantee someone a permanent place in your future.

Take a look at the comments from fellow users:

Several commenters pointed out the contradiction of claiming to “love” someone while refusing to support their marriage.

ThrowRA09999999 − “I’ve never once judged you for it” *proceeds to judge you* I’m glad you cut her off. You deserve to be loved, supported, and most of all, happy....

Ultronomy − “After praying a lot, I chose hate over love. ” Let the trash take itself out.

Nutty_Squirrels − That’s not a friend. Don’t give her another thought, don’t reply. Put your energy toward your wedding with people who don’t judge how others love for one another.

AbjectGovernment1247 − Oh, f__k her. Love and acceptance go hand in hand, Christian or not. Go and have a wonderful day and life without her. Edit: Thanks for the awards...

hobokenwayne − She already ended the friendship. Congrats on ur wedding! ! May u live long and prosper.

finch_left − Stop making excuses for Christians. They selectively pick what parts of their bible they claim is important. None of them has read it.

Homosexuality isn’t really called out that much in the bible as opposed to a ton of other things they do. So f__k them. If they don’t want to be part...

letitbleed13 − Babes, the Vatican allows priests to offer blessings to same-s__ couples, emphasizing that ALL people are welcome in the church.

In any church. She is missing the entire point. If she loved you “no matter what” she’d shut her judgmental mouth and go to your wedding and be happy for...

Renascentswine1 − She's not sorry.

Others told OP to stop wasting emotional energy trying to convince someone to accept her.

Calpicogalaxy − I’m so sorry. As a queer woman this really hurt to read. Congratulations on your wedding and forever love, however. Rooting for you two! !!

Imaginary_Sundae7947 − It’s so irritating to hear the same story over and over from different people. “I can’t accept you or be there

because I’m Christian and gay bad. ” Um, *the whole point of being a Christian is to love and accept people no matter what. * God loves ALL of his...

Maybe you’d know that if you were a real Christian, not just using it as an excuse to feel better than other people! !!

Source: I’ve been a lifelong Christian, have studied the Bible extensively, and have plenty of queer friends who I care about deeply with no issues! ! I’m really sorry that...

I hope you have a lot of real friends there who can make you forget about this snake

There is a particular kind of heartbreak that comes from losing someone who has been part of your life for more than a decade. It doesn’t disappear simply because you know walking away is the right decision.

OP can still miss the childhood friendship. She can still remember the good years. And she can still be devastated that the person she expected beside her on one of the happiest days of her life chose not to be there.

But her wedding isn’t supposed to be a test of whether someone can tolerate her relationship.

It’s supposed to be a celebration of it.

So perhaps the healthiest thing OP can do now is stop looking backward and start focusing on the people who will be there, not because they have decided to overlook who she loves, but because they genuinely want to celebrate that love with her.
