Woman Learns Her MIL Told Her Religious Mother a Secret That Never Happened

by Leona Pham
August 14, 2026
in Social Issues

She always knew her MIL was complicated. She knew there would be criticism, blame, and emotional manipulation.

But she never expected her to invent a deeply personal secret and present it as the truth.

The worst part wasn’t only the lie itself. It was the fact that her MIL chose to tell it to someone who mattered most, someone who could have been hurt by believing it.

After years of trying to maintain peace, she is finally asking herself if protecting a relationship with someone who repeatedly harms her is worth the cost.

Woman is devastated when her mother-in-law spreads a shocking lie about her past to her own mother

'My MIL told my mother I had an a__rtion. Except I never did?'

My MIL is a piece of work. We think she’s got some kind of personality

disorder based on conversations we’ve had with various mental health resources.

Nothing is ever her fault. Everyone is either terrible or wonderful. Over the

last few years, she has gotten much worse. It started with endless

accusations that my FIL was cheating (which there’s no proof of), then

attacks on my husband about what a terrible son he is, and occasionally

she’ll make comments about me and my family (that my father cheated,

the my brother and I don’t like our mother, etc.)

She blames me for her not having grandkids because she knows my

husband wanted kids (a comment he made when he was 3 which is not at

all how he feels) and that I must be keeping them from her.

Well last night, she just pushed it further. I had lived with them and my

husband for 2 years over a decade ago. Last night while on the phone with

my mother, she said “Well, Shenlyism had an a__rtion. She came home one

day clutching her stomach, I offered her a heating pad but she said no and

went to lay down.”. This never happened. I may have had some bad cramps

one day, but I have never had an a__rtion.

My mother is deeply religious. She and I are also fairly close. So my MIL

made up this story where she knew a secret about me that my mother

didn’t know and oh yeah, it’s about me having an a__rtion.

I am so deeply hurt about this. I am very pro-choice and have nothing

against anyone that has had an a__rtion, but it’s just nothing that I’ve ever

had done and for her to lie on me like this… I don’t know if I’ll ever be able

to talk to her again without an apology which I know she’ll never give.

I can’t confront her because that’s exactly what she wants. She’ll just use it

as a way to say that I’m the one that’s mean and she is the victim.

And what’s crazy is that after years of talking, my husband and I did decide

we wanted to have kids. In our minds, his parents have gone from “oh

they’ll be wonderful grandparents” to “uh… maybe we’ll just invite them to

family events” to now “they aren’t invited and won’t be involved”.

What a wicked woman to say something like that to my mom. My only

solace is that she is truly living in a hell of her own making.

My birthday and the holidays are coming up and I think this may be the first

year I don’t acknowledge her at all. Not even a text. Maybe I’ll calm down

and change my mind but right now, I’m just extremely hurt and sad

thinking of what other lies she’s spread about me.. Sorry… not sure what

my goal is here. I guess just wanting to vent about my justnomil.

Edit: I want to thank you all for your words and advice. I’m so sorry I haven’t

been able to respond to everyone, but I did read the messages and am

grateful. It’s been a really emotional day for me so I’m going to take some

time to rest and disconnect. But I am moving forward with NC.

One of the most painful betrayals often comes not from a stranger, but from someone who is supposed to be family.

When a person spreads a false story about you, the damage is not only about the lie itself, it is about the feeling that they intentionally created a version of you for others to believe.

In OP’s situation, the abortion claim was especially hurtful because it was not a simple misunderstanding.

According to OP, it was an event that never happened, yet her MIL presented it as a private secret she had been carrying for years.

The timing and the audience made it even more damaging: telling OP’s deeply religious mother created the possibility of shame, judgment, and emotional conflict where none existed before.

The larger pattern described by OP suggests that this incident was not isolated.

She describes years of accusations, blame shifting, and attempts to position herself as the victim while making others responsible for her unhappiness.

Whether or not MIL has a specific diagnosis is impossible to know, but the behavior pattern itself is concerning: creating conflict, controlling narratives, and avoiding accountability.

There is also an interesting psychological element here. People who struggle with feeling powerless sometimes try to regain control by controlling how others see situations.

A false accusation can become a way of creating a dramatic story where they become the person who “knows the truth” and others are forced to react.

The problem is that this comes at the expense of another person’s reputation and emotional safety.

This perspective helps explain why OP feels hesitant to confront her MIL.

In some difficult relationships, the goal is not always to prove who is right; it is to protect personal boundaries.

If every confrontation becomes another opportunity for someone to claim victimhood, stepping back can sometimes be a healthier response than repeatedly trying to correct misinformation.

OP’s decision to consider distance is not necessarily about punishment.

It appears to come from feeling unsafe and exhausted after years of similar experiences.

Family connections can be meaningful, but family titles do not give someone unlimited permission to hurt others without consequences.

Moving forward, the most important thing may be for OP and her husband to stay united.

If they choose limited contact or no contact, that decision should come from protecting their emotional well-being rather than trying to force MIL to understand.

Some people never provide the apology or accountability we hope for.

Sometimes closure does not come from hearing “I was wrong.”

Sometimes it comes from accepting that someone showed their priorities clearly and choosing peace over endless explanations.

Here’s the input from the Reddit crowd:

These commenters urged OP’s husband to confront MIL directly, demand accountability, and consider cutting contact until a sincere apology is given

Rad1PhysCa3 − I feel so awful for you and DH, OP! Your MIL is just straight

up delusional and evil. I would hold off on DH approaching MIL about this

for a while. Try to get an idea of how far this a__rtion lie has spread, and

how many other lies she’s told about you. Gather evidence. Possibly consult a lawyer, because this is slander.

And once he does confront her, he should record it (conforming to your

local laws) or any other conversation he has with her. Even better to get

her responses in writing. But she may try to pull some crazy stuff during

her extinction burst, or if you ever have children. You may need some good evidence of her past wrongdoings.

I’m so sorry you’re in this situation and that she has deeply hurt you. I hope

you and DH are able to find peace and solace soon.

Responsible-Yam-2773 − Agree with everyone here. This is unforgivable,

and dangerous. You need to go NC and your mother needs to block her

immediately. This is not a good or safe person, whatever her medical or personality issues.

Fuzzy-Mushroom-1933 − Your mom needs to stop talking to her at all. If my

MIL made up a lie (any lie) about me and then told my mom, I would be

100% NC. Furthermore, I understand that you don’t want her to be able to

play victim, but your husband really needs to step in here and chew her ass

This group supported going no contact, arguing MIL’s behavior was harmful, manipulative, and showed she could create serious problems in the future

been2thehi4 − Is be cutting that woman off. Like how much more b__lshit is one family going to take?

mvl0505 − If you choose to have kids, don’t tell her you’re pregnant. Don’t

tell her anything about your life. She doesn’t deserve to know. If she finds

out from other sources and is “hurt”, who cares? She brought this on herself.

SoOverYouAll − This was 100% meant to drive a wedge between you and

your mom. The fact that she is devious enough to pick a__rtion while she (I

assume) knows your mom is religious was the nuclear option. If you are

going to have kids, what’s the next life changing bomb? Calling CPS?

Alleging your brother/dad/other close male relative has done something inappropriate to a child?

This evil thing she did to you and your mom would ensure she’d never see

me or any future kids ever again, because she has shown what she is capable of.

fanofpolkadotts − Honestly, this would be my moment to go NC. And it is

definitely her M. O. to make up terrible accusations & and never

acknowledge or apologize. If you can, I would consider a family counselor

for you & you husband. It is often hard for people to see how hurtful and

horrible a parent's behavior is. ..when that has been their normalcy.

These users shared similar experiences with difficult in-laws and encouraged OP to prioritize peace, boundaries, and support from her spouse

Paddywhack23 − Wow, I read this post to my husband and minus a few

details this could have been written about me/my justnoMIL. I'm glad you

were able to clear things up with your mom and it sounds like you and your

husband are making a united front. Hang on tight to each other and don't let her win.

sometimesfamilysucks − My MIL was a horrible person and I told my

husband, after several years of marriage, that I would no longer call her,

visit her, purchase gifts for her…I was done. I told him if he wanted to do all

those things, fine, but don’t involve me. My life was much easier after that conversation.

He did not like his mother and interacted with her as little as possible.

These commenters speculated that MIL’s behavior could be linked to mental health or personality issues

Dianne_on_Trend − This is terrible the way you have been treated!

Consider that she may have some sort of dementia onset? There are

different kinds and some include paranoia, hostility, lying , etc. definitely NOT normal.

My FIL had vascular dementia (not enough blood reached his brain due to

clogged arteries) and he believed his son was stealing from him and gave $25000 away to random people he did not know

thfemaleofthespecies − As an armchair diagnosis, this sounds a lot like a cluster B personality disorder

After years of dealing with accusations, blame, and personal attacks, OP thought she had seen the worst of her MIL’s behavior.

Then came a claim that crossed a completely different line: a private, deeply personal event that never happened, shared with OP’s own mother.

The lie wasn’t just hurtful; it was designed to damage OP’s reputation and create conflict.

Now OP is questioning whether this is the moment to finally walk away.

Do you think OP was right to go no contact, or should she give her MIL a chance to apologize?

How would you handle a family member spreading a serious false accusation about you? Share your thoughts below!
