Woman’s Husband Cheats, Then His Own Mom Starts Cooking Every Meal He Hates

Cheating can destroy a marriage, but sometimes it also reveals exactly where everyone else in the family stands. I think there is something strangely comforting about discovering that the people you expected to defend their own son are instead willing to call out his behavior and support the person he hurt.

One Redditor found herself in that unexpected position after learning that her husband had been unfaithful. Even though the couple was heading toward divorce, her in-laws still moved into the family home as originally planned, and they made it clear whose side they were on.

The tension grew when the husband allegedly lied to his mother for money and then spent the next day with his mistress. That small betrayal pushed his mother over the edge and inspired a delightfully petty form of revenge involving dinner. Scroll down to see how this unusual household handled the fallout.

'My MIL’s Petty Revenge against her cheating, lying son'

So I posted about my cheating husband in another sub back in September and/or October.

I was not in a good headspace then but I have since healed and looking forward to my new life!

Just to be clear, my in laws have treated me better than my own parents ever did.

They are the best people and I love them very much. On to the petty revenge!

Around this time last year my MIL and FIL came to me and my husband and told us their house was getting foreclosed on

(The reasons for this are for a whole other post). We said of course they can move in! We wouldn’t have it any other way!

My FIL was diagnosed with a fatal disease called idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis around the same time last year. He was given 2-5 years.

So again there was no question as to them moving in except when.

Over time they finally decided to move in just before (US) Thanksgiving in November.

I found out my soon to be ex husband was cheating on me in early September.

I was then asked if his parents could still move in and I said of course! I’m not going to punish them because he can’t keep it in his pants!

They are completely on my side and will engage in polite conversation with him but that’s about it.

Here I should add that yes he still lives in the same house at the moment because his name is on the deed for the moment,

we have an agreement for our divorce settlement, he refuses to leave because he will be homeless cause HIS MISTRESS DOESN’T EVEN WANT HIM!!🤣🤣🤣

Also our daughter is autistic and we have to transition her slowly otherwise risk a major meltdown that she might not recover from.

A less than idyllic situation but I don’t mind.

One thing that really set my MIL off was one day, a Tuesday, my stbxh asked his mom for $20. He told her that he needed to put gas in...

We only have one vehicle between him and me. From that Tuesday evening that he borrowed the money

until that Thursday when he got paid he didn’t take the car and the gas was almost on E the entire time.

That Wednesday he went out with his mistress all day.

That Thursday evening I mentioned the gas situation to my MIL.

That’s when we figured out he lied to her about needing money for gas just so he could go out with his mistress!!

One evening my MIL and I were trying to figure out something for dinner.

My stbxh is a very picky eater so I have learned over the past 15 years to only make what he will eat.

So while we were thinking of a meal to make I mentioned that he wouldn’t eat it.

My golden angel of a MIL said, I don’t care. I’m mad at him so he can fend for himself!

Ever since then we try to come up with meals we know he won’t eat just so he can fend for himself knowing full well he’ll just starve or go...

It’s our small, petty way of getting revenge on him!

Honestly now? I really don’t care enough about him to care about petty revenge anymore but I love it for my MIL!

Oh, and since September my best revenge is that I’ve lost 60 pounds and am almost half way to my goal weight!

THAT is the best revenge! Have a wonderful day and stay petty my fellow potatoes!. Edited because autocorrect got me and I didn’t realize it!

Divorce doesn’t necessarily divide an entire family neatly down the middle.

Parents can love an adult child while strongly disapproving of that child’s behavior, and former in-laws can develop bonds that exist independently of the marriage that originally connected them.

Psychologist Joshua Coleman has written about how divorce can create complicated loyalty conflicts for extended families, including situations where parents genuinely love a son- or daughter-in-law they may lose when their child’s relationship ends.

A Psychology Today discussion of parents coping with their children’s divorces specifically notes that “loyalty issues surface too” because relatives may have formed meaningful attachments to the spouse and grandchildren.

That helps explain why the mother-in-law’s reaction doesn’t have to mean she stopped loving her son. She may simply have reached a point where supporting him no longer meant defending what he did.

Infidelity itself can create profound emotional upheaval. Researcher Mark Whisman and colleagues found in a population-based U.S. sample that the annual prevalence of marital infidelity was about 2.3%, while other research has linked discovering a partner’s affair with substantial psychological distress.

The exact rates vary considerably depending on how researchers define infidelity and which population they study, so no single number captures every relationship.

The Gottman Institute describes affair discovery as a form of betrayal that can bring anger, sadness, fear, and a sense that the reality of the relationship has suddenly changed. Its affair-recovery guidance stresses accountability and says the betrayed partner needs their feelings heard and validated rather than minimized.

That validation seems important in this story because the wife wasn’t receiving it only from friends. Her husband’s own parents were acknowledging that his decisions had consequences.

The $20 lie adds another layer. The American Psychological Association reports that money is already a significant source of relationship tension: in one Stress in America survey, 31% of partnered adults said money was a major source of conflict in their relationship.

Here, the amount was tiny, but the perceived deception made it symbolic. To his mother, the issue apparently wasn’t twenty dollars. It was discovering that her son may have manipulated her generosity to support behavior she already opposed.

As for the revenge dinners, they fall at the wonderfully low end of the retaliation scale. Nobody is destroying belongings or sabotaging finances. Two adults have simply stopped organizing every household meal around a grown man’s picky preferences.

That may even represent a healthier shift than calling it revenge suggests.

After 15 years of accommodating his tastes, the soon-to-be ex-wife no longer needs to structure her domestic labor around keeping him comfortable.

Psychology Today guidance on marital boundaries emphasizes autonomy, communication, and deciding what responsibilities people are willing to take on for one another. Once a marriage is ending, continuing spouse-level caretaking can blur an already complicated transition.

For this family, the most constructive future probably involves reducing the petty games as the separation progresses, keeping financial arrangements transparent, and protecting the daughter’s stability from adult conflict. The wife already seems to be moving that direction herself: she admitted she barely cares about revenge anymore.

That may be the strongest part of the story. The meals are funny. Indifference is freedom.

Here’s how people reacted to the post:

These users celebrated OP’s progress and praised her supportive in-laws

mnemonicprincess − Congrats on your weigh loss OP. I'm glad your MIL and FIL are on your side otherwise living with them would be hell.

Hopefully you can get your ex out of the house soon and start living your best life. Here's wishing you all the joy and happiness.

Imaginary_Bike2126 − Good for you and it is great that you have such wonderful in-laws.

EloParis17 − Good for you and for your in-laws! Keep going with the weight loss! Proud of you!

Sewing-Mama − You have the world's best MIL!

These commenters saw the ex as little more than a roommate who should move out

Careless-Image-885 − He's just a roommate at this point. Don't cook or clean for him. Don't do his laundry. Tell MIL not to do it either. He can go to...

curtludwig − There is something very wholesome about the thought of him moving out and you living with his parents. ..

This group felt living well, with the in-laws backing OP, was the sweetest revenge.

wlfwrtr − With MIL losing her home and her husband's diagnosis she probably needs the petty revenge to give her something to think about and keep her going.

lapsteelguitar − The best revenge is living well. Even better when his parents are on YOUR side.

This Redditor joked that OP should keep the wonderful in-laws after the divorce.

the_storm_eye − So, I guess that you will keep the parents (in-laws) in the divorce. ..

This user urged OP to protect her money, credit, and accounts from her ex

Fun-Yellow-6576 − He didn’t have $20 to his name? Girl I hope you’ve locked down your credit, closed any mutual cards, and put your $ in an account he can’t...

Is deliberately cooking meals he dislikes harmless comedy, or should everyone stop catering to him without framing it as revenge? And if a marriage ended this way, would keeping the in-laws feel comforting or impossibly complicated?
