MIL Demands Grandson Visits Her House Only, Then Gets Shocked When Mom Stops Bringing Him

in Social Issues

For years, OP felt like her MIL only wanted a relationship with her grandson when it happened on MIL’s terms.

Visits always took place at MIL’s home, while invitations to spend time together as a family were repeatedly ignored.

After deciding to stop chasing the relationship, OP was hopeful when MIL finally asked to take her grandson out.

She thought this could be the beginning of a healthier dynamic.

Instead, a simple breakfast outing turned into another argument about boundaries, effort, and entitlement.

Mother sets boundaries after her MIL expects access to her grandson only on her own terms

not the actual photo

'“I shouldn’t have to ask permission to see my grandson.”?'

My MIL has always had visitation from my son (her grandson) on her terms.

Which is, at her house, without us. She will blow off any other chance to

see us as a family on the weekends, and even chances to pick up my son

and take him to parks, libraries, etc. I decided to drop the rope this past

month and he just stopped showing up at her house, but the invitations to meet us continued.

She asked if she could take my son on a “date” I agreed and threw out some

suggestions close to our house. She decided she would like to take him to

McDonald’s breakfast. I was excited that MIL had finally seen the light and

thought this would be the start of the support that I have always wanted. I

am a SAHM and my son isn’t in daycare so I am always trying to get him out

as much as possible to socialize him. This is the text message in finalizing

plans. Literally my only request was to stay on this side of town.. MIL: I’ll try

to be there by 9. me: Take ur time. If you make it by 9:30 that’s totally fine..

MIL: all good. We make come back here to see pops, but we will still grab breakfast!

Me: that’s not what we agreed to. If pops wants to see him, he can make an

effort. CJ doesn’t always have to truck across town to see him.. MIL: my apologies. We all work.

Me: pops works right by our house. Pops has an opportunity to see CJ at a

restaurant on Saturday. If he wants to see him, he will. As far as picking up

CJ goes, I am new to this taking my child places so please don’t push my boundaries.. MIL: ok, we will do it another time.

I. Was. Shaking. It’s been 2 years of my child being exclusively as her house.

No one makes any effort to see him outside of those walls. He is only

valuable in their world and they refuse to become a part of ours. It’s just

gotten so old. I didn’t respond and we spent Thanksgiving with my family

as planned. I told my husband I needed a little break from dealing with MIL.

When we got back into town, my BIL and his girlfriend wanted to come by

to watch football. As they were leaving for my house, my mil told them

that she would be coming by because she “doesn’t need permission to see

her grandson” I was at a loss, she’s the one who blew us off! The

entitlement is just beyond me. Needless to say, our little trio is taking a very long break from MIL.

Sometimes the hardest boundaries to set are not with strangers, but with family members who believe love gives them unlimited access.

When someone becomes a grandparent, it can be easy for them to focus on the title they hold rather than the relationship they are actively building.

In this situation, the OP was not trying to keep her MIL away from her grandson.

She was asking for something much simpler: a relationship that included respect, effort, and participation in their family’s life.

The emotional tension in this story comes from a long pattern of imbalance.

For years, MIL’s involvement happened only when it was convenient for her: visits at her house, on her schedule, without the OP or the child’s daily environment being considered.

The OP initially saw the breakfast outing as a positive change, a sign that MIL was finally willing to meet them halfway.

Instead, the conversation quickly returned to the same dynamic, her son being expected to travel and adapt while MIL’s preferences remained the priority.

What makes this painful is that the OP was not rejecting help; she was hoping for genuine support.

As a stay-at-home parent, she wanted her child to have meaningful connections and social experiences.

A grandparent who participates in the child’s world can become an important source of support.

However, when one person only wants access under their own conditions, the relationship can begin to feel less like family connection and more like entitlement.

A different perspective is that MIL may genuinely believe she is showing love by inviting her grandson over.

Some grandparents see their home as the place where they can bond, create memories, and feel involved.

She may not fully understand that relationships require flexibility from both sides.

However, good intentions do not cancel out the effect of repeatedly ignoring another person’s needs.

A relationship cannot grow if only one side is expected to make sacrifices.

This explains why the OP’s reaction was not simply about one breakfast. The breakfast represented years of feeling unseen.

When MIL changed the plan again and later declared she did not need permission to see her grandson, it reinforced the fear that MIL viewed access to the child as a right rather than something connected to trust and cooperation.

The healthiest solution may not be permanent distance, but a reset of expectations.

Grandparents can have meaningful relationships with grandchildren, but those relationships are strongest when they respect the parents who are raising them.

Love is not measured by how often someone demands time with a child; it is measured by how willing they are to show up in a way that supports the entire family.

The OP’s decision to step back may give everyone the space needed to understand that connection requires effort from both sides.

Check out how the community responded:

These commenters emphasized that MIL does not have automatic access to OP’s child and must respect the parents’ authority and permission

HoneyWyne − Actually, she does need permission to see your son.

childofcrow − But she does need permission. Because it’s not her child.

Quirky_Difference800 − She actually does need permission to see YOUR son.

PaleontologistNo858 − Hello? Yes she does need permission, she's got to "l

have ownership". Stop that in it's tracks OP. As for socializing your son, look

into playgroups, libraries, mum and baby groups in your area, there's bound to be something and it's well worth it.

This group argued that a stressful or disrespectful grandparent relationship can be more harmful than having limited contact

hengehanger − There seems to be a lot of ropes still attached here, which

one did you drop exactly? This woman is never going to be the grandma or

MIL that you want her to be. There's no point waiting for that to happen

because it won't. If her behaviour and comments are causing you stress, step back from them.

You have to understand that having a grandma in his life who causes stress

and tension and undermines your wishes is a lot worse for your son than having no grandma in his life.

emorrigan − You’re nicer than I am. In-laws who don’t have a relationship

with me don’t get to have a relationship with my child. If they want to see

my kid, they can do it when I’m around, because I don’t trust them one iota

to behave themselves. I already know they’ll demean and undermine me to my children as much as they can.

wasakootenayperson − Mmm - she does need permission actually. She can

temper tantrum to her little hearts content if she chooses to push at your boundaries and limits. Good luck.

These users questioned why MIL insists on only seeing the child at her own home

MaryHadALittleLamb20 − Your MIL wants to be in control and exclude you

hence the visit is always on her turf. Ask her why she can only visit with your

child alone at her house! Once a month invite her and if she declines that is her problem.

peony27 − This is incredibly weird. Why does she insist on only seeing him

at her house? Why doesn’t she want to be in public places with your child?

There’s no way in hell I’d be accommodating this insane behaviour. Put your

foot down. She does need permission to see your son. You control who has access to your child.

So either she gets on board or she she doesn’t get to see him 🤷🏻‍♀️

Neppetaa − that's suspicious af. why doesnt she want other people around her when she has your kid?

These commenters shared similar experiences where they stopped doing all the effort to maintain the grandparent relationship and let the other person take responsibility

loveisrespectS2 − My MIL works on the same street that we live on. Not

one single day has she stopped by to see our daughter. She never calls me

either, and I have her 90% of the time. If we don't go to her house on the weekend, she would literally never see my child.

I used to be the one who made the suggestion every weekend, hey let's

take baby to see MIL. I decided to just stop that nonsense and she hasn't

seen our daughter for nearly three months, which is wild given that she

could easily stop in on her way home. I'm not calling and I'm definitely over suggesting that we go spend time over there!

Her excuse is, oh I thought you guys were busy. Lol.

MadamRorschach − My mom refused to “make appointments” to go see my

brother’s kids, so she never saw them. She tried showing up randomly at

my place and I told her she needed to call or text first. She refused so she never sees them.

OP wasn’t asking for a grand gesture, she was asking for a small shift: for MIL to be part of their family’s life instead of only expecting access to her grandson on her own terms.

The conflict wasn’t really about McDonald’s breakfast; it was about years of feeling like the child was expected to fit into MIL’s world without MIL making an effort to join theirs.

Do you think OP was right to step back after setting a boundary, or should she have given MIL another chance to adjust?

How would you handle a grandparent who wants involvement but only when it’s convenient for them? Share your thoughts below!
