MIL Starts Planning Her Grandbaby’s Sleepover At Six Months, Mom Has Other Plans

by Leona Pham
August 18, 2026
in Social Issues

OP thought she had finally found a manageable compromise with her MIL: weekly visits limited to two hours because her newborn is exclusively breastfed.

It wasn’t ideal, but at least OP could control when the visit ended.

Then MIL casually brought up sleepovers and immediately started preparing for one, even researching and buying a bassinet for her home.

OP never agreed to send her infant away overnight, especially at such a young age, and now wonders how to stop MIL from treating a possibility as if it were already a promise.

New mom is stunned when her MIL starts planning an infant sleepover despite never being asked

not the actual photo

'MIL is planning a sleepover with my newborn?'

MIL bullied me into weekly visits at my house with our 11 week old...I've

reluctantly agreed only because I can kick them out after two hours since

baby is exclusively breastfed. Today during a visit she mentioned being

excited about eventual sleepovers and I said yeah sure cool without

thinking much of it. This evening she texts me to tell me that a friend of

hers who had a baby recently will lend her the bassinet attachment from

her stroller for the baby to sleep in at MIL's place since it's rated for safe

sleep. I gently say oh that's only suitable for babies up to six months old

and that's a bit too early for a sleepover. MIL says well let us know what to

buy, baby will be six months old so soon! Before I can clarify that baby

won't be sleeping over at six months she sends another text with a pic of a

bedside bassinet, says she's buying it because it's good for babies up to a year old.

She's cracked. What does she think she's going to do with my breastfed

baby at 3AM? She's in her 70s and hasn't looked after a baby in over 30

years. I'm not sending my infant to her house for MIL's benefit for a

sleepover when baby can't understand what a sleepover is.

Few things make a new parent feel more vulnerable than realizing someone else has begun making plans for their baby without waiting for permission.

What looks small from the outside, a bassinet purchase, a comment about sleepovers, another weekly visit, can feel enormous when the parent is already adjusting to an entirely new life.

In this story, the mother’s frustration seems less about one piece of baby equipment and more about repeatedly feeling that her decisions are being treated as obstacles to work around.

The emotional conflict is especially interesting because both women may be acting from attachment, but expressing it in completely different ways.

The MIL appears excited about becoming an involved grandmother and may see overnight care as a milestone of closeness.

The mother, meanwhile, sees an 11-week-old infant who depends heavily on her and has no need for a recreational sleepover.

Each new purchase may therefore register not as generosity, but as pressure disguised as preparation.

There is another psychological angle worth considering.

The mother initially responded casually to the idea of a future sleepover, perhaps because saying “yeah sure cool” was easier in the moment than creating tension.

Her MIL may have interpreted politeness as genuine agreement.

That does not entitle the grandmother to determine when an overnight visit happens, but it shows how conflict avoidance can unintentionally create ambiguity.

The real problem emerged when a hypothetical “someday” rapidly became planning for “soon.”

That distinction fits this situation almost perfectly. The grandmother can be loving, enthusiastic, and genuinely well-intentioned while still overstepping.

Likewise, the mother does not need to prove that her MIL is incapable of caring for a baby before declining sleepovers.

Parental authority does not depend on winning an argument about breastfeeding, age, bassinets, or experience.

The most useful next step may therefore be simpler than debating every purchase: establish the rule first and let future decisions follow it.

Sleepovers can wait until the parents decide they benefit their child and feel comfortable with them.

A bassinet bought in anticipation does not create an obligation.

Grandparents can build extraordinary relationships through ordinary daytime moments, and perhaps the healthiest closeness begins when access to a child is understood as trust to nurture, not a milestone to claim.

See what others had to share with OP:

These commenters urged OP to reduce visits and stop encouraging MIL’s sleepover expectations

unicornviolence − You need to move visits to once every other week. Once a week is clearly too much.

Dachshundmom5 − You need to stop being vague and polite. Preferably,

your husband should shut his mother down entirely. However, if he won't,

it is past time for you to do so "MIL do not waste money on something that

is jot going to be used. Baby is not doing overnights for a long. " Again, your husband should call and shut it all down.

The weekly visits, the delusions of sleepover time. All of it. Once she has

spent money, she will start guilting you and bullying you because that got her the weekly visits.

CommandOk4235 − I don’t understand their obsession to babysit and do

sleep over but you really need to be clear this won’t happen. “You shouldn’t

buy all this expensive stuff MIL since baby won’t sleep over” MIL was very

pushy to babysit in the beginning and I really didn’t like it. Now baby is 15 month and she NEVER babysat 😬

lovinglifeatmyage − So just very firmly tell her no. Baby isn’t sleeping over

at all for the next year or 2 at least. Sometimes you have to pull your

hopefully comfy big girl panties up and get really firm about boundaries Good luck

These commenters agreed OP needs to give a direct “no” instead of soft hints about boundaries

phelgmdounuts − Have you told her no? There's a lot of "reluctantly

agreed", "gently say", "Before I can clarify" But have you just said no?

Ehmashoes − She’s cracked, but you (or preferably your partner) need to

start being more direct. If you don’t want weekly visits, say something. If you don’t want sleepovers, say that to her.

Friendly_Afternoon19 − Its time to just spit it out.   "OH. MIL, dont waste

you money on that, baby is breastfeeding and will not be having any

sleepovers until she's MUCH older. " When she pushes and tries to change

your mind or guilt trip you its  "Im sorry, MIL  but its not really up for

discussion.   Partner and I have already talked this. Its not happening".

Then, thats it. If she pushes back again? Ignore  her.

SwimmingParsley8388 − “Oh I misunderstood you. I thought you were

asking to come sleepover at our place for more time with LO. LO will not be

staying over anywhere without myself and dad. ” End of discussion.

These commenters encouraged OP to become firmer and prioritize protecting the child over avoiding conflict

GrynnTog − Please, (and I say this with care and love) polish your spine.

Your job is to look after your child which also means putting your foot

down and possibly upsetting people down the line. I've had to do this with my MIL and a doctor before.

Your kid once old enough is going to remember the times you stand up for

them and more importantly the times you don't. It's best to get into the habit now so it's easy to do once they're older. Best of luck op!

Blinktoe − You’re a mom now. Time to get tough and confrontational. (I’m not great at it! )

These commenters questioned why MIL wants unsupervised baby sleepovers so badly

Chemical-Fox-5350 − Whyyyyyy do they ALWAYS want unsupervised “sleepovers”

loricomments − Bleah. I'm sorry you're having to deal with this. She's

clearly forgotten the work it takes to care for a baby around the clock.

Sadwitchsea − Why is everyone so desperate to spend the night with a baby in the absence of it's parents?

OP’s MIL has apparently skipped several steps and gone straight from “maybe someday” to shopping for baby furniture.

A casual “sure, cool” about a future sleepover hardly sounds like a binding childcare agreement, especially when OP never actually agreed to a specific age or arrangement.

Do you think OP should clarify the boundary now before MIL buys an entire nursery, or let her learn that a bassinet doesn’t come with a reservation for the baby?

At what age, if any, would you feel comfortable with a grandparent sleepover? Share your thoughts below!
