Woman Discovers Her Sister Put Her Name On A Ticket, So She Makes A Hard Choice

in Social Issues

OP never expected that a traffic violation would turn into a legal nightmare, especially one caused by someone she trusted.

After her sister used her name for a serious speeding offense, OP was left dealing with a ticket, a missed court appearance, and even a warrant for her arrest without ever knowing any of it was happening.

When the truth finally came out, OP had to make a painful decision: protect her sister from consequences or protect herself and her child from the fallout of someone else’s actions. In the end, she chose accountability.

A mother discovers her sister used her identity for a speeding violation

not the actual photo

'I had a warrant out for my arrest because of my sister?'

So my sister got a super speeder and used my name. Not only was I issued a

ticket, but a warrant for my arrest because I knew nothing about the

situation and I never showed up to court, because I had no idea!!! I only

found out last minute after I was looking through the mail from my old

address. As soon as I saw the mail I contacted the sheriff’s office and they

gave me a date to show up to court. The judge let me know that they

issued a warrant for my arrest but given the circumstances they let me go

but advised I see an investigator as soon as I leave. MIND YOU I had to show

up to court with my one year old because it was last minute and I’m a

SAHM. After I spoke to my mom about it she called my sister and her

response was “do what you gotta do” The investigator asked if I wanted to

press charges. Should I press charges on my own sister??. Update: charges

have been pressed. I did what had to be done

Also immediately after court I had given them all the evidence and

information to clear my name. For mine and my child’s sake. I just didn’t

know if I wanted to take that extra step but I am

Few choices feel more emotionally complicated than protecting yourself when the person who harmed you is someone you love.

This woman was not dealing with an ordinary disagreement between sisters.

According to her account, her sister used her identity after receiving a serious speeding ticket, leaving her with a citation she knew nothing about and eventually a warrant when she unknowingly missed court.

She discovered the situation almost by accident and then had to appear before a judge with her one-year-old child.

The emotional conflict is understandable because two powerful loyalties collided. One was loyalty to family.

The other was responsibility for her own legal record, freedom, and child. Her hesitation about pressing charges suggests she understood that consequences for her sister could be significant.

Yet her sister’s response, “do what you gotta do,” offered little acknowledgment of the position she had created.

There is another perspective worth considering. Pressing charges can sound like the moment this woman “got her sister in trouble,” but that framing reverses responsibility.

The original decision created the legal problem.

Cooperating with investigators was a response to it.

Once someone else’s actions have been attached to a person’s identity, protecting the relationship by remaining quiet may require that innocent person to absorb risks they never agreed to take.

That distinction is crucial here. This was not merely about deciding whether her sister deserved punishment.

The woman needed an official record establishing that she was not responsible for the violation.

A warrant had already reportedly been issued.

Future misunderstandings involving driving records, background checks, insurance, or court records could potentially create additional complications, which made documenting what happened especially important.

Her update therefore sounds less vindictive than decisive: she provided investigators with the evidence needed to clear her name and ultimately agreed to charges.

She did not invent the consequences or manufacture a family crisis.

She stopped shielding another adult from the repercussions of a choice that had already endangered her.

The healthiest next step is probably to keep every relevant document, follow official instructions, and avoid becoming the family negotiator for whatever happens afterward.

Her sister can obtain her own advice and handle her own case.

Family loyalty can include compassion, but it cannot reasonably require someone to accept another person’s legal liability.

Sometimes “doing what has to be done” is painful precisely because the boundary should never have needed enforcing in the first place.

Take a look at the comments from fellow users:

These commenters agreed that using OP’s identity was serious and deserved legal consequences

Flashy_Ad_8247 − Yes yes yes, she actively threw you under the bus which

could’ve gotten you arrested even worse as a SAHM. Though I’m curious why are you at all hesitant to press charges for what she did?

frustratedDIL − I wouldn’t be surprised if they press charges against her,

regardless of your wishes. She used a false name with law enforcement.

However, you very easily could have been taken into custody at the court

hearing, leaving CPS to find placement for your child. I’d press charges against anyone who would put me/my child in that position.

SnooWords4839 − Yes, that's identity theft. Press charges!

TheDreadPirateJeff − “Do what you gotta do”. I think your sister just asked

you to press charges. Consider this. YOU had charges against you because

of her. This is her mess and she made it worse. Absolutely press charges.

She fucked around and now she needs to discover the find out part.

These commenters emphasized that the false charges could have harmed OP’s freedom, custody, and future opportunities

dancinhorse99 − YES! Imagine you accidentally ran a stop sign with your kid

in the car and you got stopped with that warrent still out. Your baby could

have ended up in foster care while you cooled your heels in jail until they

figured out a person to pick your kid up. It happens all the time

WickedThickness − Please press charges against your sister and work with

an attorney to get your record expunged. If you don't, these charges can

pop up in the future on any background check, which can prevent you from

getting a job, purchasing a house, renting an apartment, or even being denied a credit card.

Winter_Daenerys_8170 − Absolutely. Your sister clearly has never had real

consequences for her actions and neither knows nor cares how what she

did affects others. She needs to learn and unfortunately sometimes tough

love is the best teacher. You could have been arrested, sent to jail, and your

child could have been taken if they chose to do a full investigation of you.

What she did put your family at risk.

These commenters shared similar identity misuse stories and warned that family members may repeat harmful behavior without consequences

ManufacturerCrazy142 − Yes! !! My sister experienced a similar situation.

Our mother definitely put a car in her name as well as an auto loan. My

brother crashed the car. It was in my sisters name and no one thought to say anything about the wreck, loan, or court date.

She didn’t find out til she went to the dmv for a renewal and had 2 flags

that had nothing to do with her. Til this day they won’t rectify the situation

or even admit wrong doing. You allow serious offenses like this family or

no, they WILL do it again. Press the dang charges. Examples must be made.

garde_coo_ea24 − Yes, press charges. Keep a file of her actions using her

name and proof you were elsewhere. This happened to distant cousin.

Younger sister kept getting arrested, using older sis name. Theft,

prostitution etc. Older sis found out because she kept getting turned down

for jobs. She finally asked one potential employer why.

Eventually, older sis had to keep a file of all the charges with mugshots. Also had the police clear her name.

These commenters believed the sister needed accountability and consequences for her actions

UrbanTruckie − Lets get her those three strikes

trying_2b_true − Yes. Teach her a lesson. She should suffer the

consequences. She didn’t care about you then, so why should you now?

OP was put in an impossible position because this was never just about a speeding ticket.

Her sister’s choice created a legal problem that followed OP, resulted in a warrant, forced her to appear in court unexpectedly, and put her at risk of consequences she had no part in causing.

The fact that the response was “do what you gotta do” instead of an apology made the betrayal even deeper.

Do you think OP was right to press charges, or should family loyalty have changed her decision?

At what point does protecting yourself and your child become more important than protecting a sibling from consequences? Share your thoughts below!
